We always need new superheroes. But actual new ones, reflecting the modern day, rather than reflecting yesterday. Unless reflecting yesterday is the point of the story. But the idea that we don’t need new superheroes is like not needing new romances or new detectives. The moment you don’t need new characters in genre stories, the genre is as dead as Latin. It’s not a crime that superheroes don’t age, but it’s a problem that superhero series don’t more often age and die and get replaced. Imagine if Kinsey Millhone and V.I. Warshawski and other modern (well, relatively) PIs couldn’t get an audience because Sam Spade and Race Williams were taking up all the shelf space. If you’re writing X-Men and your metaphors are about Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, that’s not all that much more modern than if your metaphors are about the Red Scare and McCarthyism. Ask yourself new questions, and put the results in your stories. Steve Englehart juiced up Captain America by asking what Captain America meant to the early 1970s. What does he mean now? What does Superman represent to the world? How does that, whatever it is, fit into the world today? Same for Batman, same for Wonder Woman. Tell stories you couldn’t tell ten, twenty, fifty years ago. -- Kurt Busiek

16.One of your favourite classical songs

I
have no answer to this. I stopped listening to classical music right around the same time I stopped playing the flute (senior year of high school).  I realized that all the competitiveness made me somewhere between uncomfortable and ill, and I didn't want to go to college for the flute, I just wanted to smoke cigarettes and do something academic.

While I regret no longer having the ability to play an instrument, I miss having a skill level in something nominally objective, I think I made the right choice.  But I still don't listen to classical music and I don't remember what I used to listen to, I only remember that I did.

17.A song that you would sing as a duet on karaoke

Henry Lee by Nick Cave and PJ Harvey

honorable mentions: Don't you want me by The Human League and, though I've used the song to answer an earlier prompt, Your Ex-Lover is Dead by Stars.

Why this piece is awesome: This is a Captain America/Star Wars: The Force Awakens crossover. The artist herself noted, "I kept thinking about Star Wars AU and had to add Bucky as a storm trooper, because guess who else broke their conditioning and escaped an evil organization?", which perfectly sums up why I think this piece works. I also love the casting of Steve as a Jedi, and Tony as a Resistance pilot.

I mean, there were a lot of Wildstorm books. And remember I said it was a pirate ship? The world-building was all over the place. I had to sit down and write a fucking cosmology for this project. Jim Lee made me invent 12,000 years of intergalactic history and I will never forgive him. -- Warren Ellis

…Some weeks just not starting more ginormous WIPs is the real success, okay? I expended a lot of focus on absolutely positively not starting SEVERAL things this week (and… yep, that is definitely the only thing that was using up brain processing cycles this week at an unusual rate, YEP, TOTALLY).

Anyway.

WIPs currently active: 5, because I bumped All Eternals Deck #2 off the list until I figure out what happens after the beginning.

Words written this week: 4,041

WIPs that got no words this week: 0

WIPs that did get words this week:

Codename: Aluminum Bastard (aka broken dick epic): 883, and I started writing Chapter 47 and then abruptly discovered where the floating point on the outline labeled [particular sex act redacted]? should go in the story, so. Whee!

Born in the Blood: 276, chugging along toward [more sex acts redacted]!!

Slavefic #6: 104. Okay, that looks bad? I’m at the point where I outlined things for this part of the series literally almost two years ago and now have to figure out how to hook them up with the stories that I’ve actually written, so there’s a bit of frantically-jury-rigging-a-round-CO2-filter-from-square-components going on. Hopefully none of which will be apparent from the end result. :)

According to Kodansha Comics, this is a series for those who are fans of Steven Universe, so there you go.
Frankly, I say you'll probably like this if you like some abstract stuff.

The first chapter is available to read for free, thus the amount of pages below. Feel free to check them out on the site here though.

Once upon a time, DC comics understood that comics don't have to be always serious grimdark heavy drama involving lots of gratuitous violence and rape. That was a good thing, but the less serious comics that DC put out weren't always worthwhile. Today it seemed appropriate to post 8/23 pages from issue 117 of the mercifully forgotten "The Adventures of Jerry Lewis" comic, an issue worthy of note today only because it guest starred Wonder Woman in her "mod" phase.

JerryLewis_117_00

gratuitous sexism and unfunny jokes ahoy )

The past was a different country, one in which it was possible for there to be over 100 issues of a Jerry Lewis comic.

ETA: the last page includes a statement of management and circulation. in 1970, "The Adventures of Jerry Lewis" was selling 175,000 copies every month. Do you think maybe, just maybe, going after ever more grimdark crossover events might have been a mistake on DC's part?

Giving this the crack tag, I guess? And the misogyny tag, because Jerry Lewis.

Continuing Harvey Dent's 75th anniversary I'm going to be posting a few comics featuring Two-Face by Greg Rucka. I don't know if I'd call him the definitive writer for the character but he gets his mindset and has written for him on several occasions. This was first try at the bat so to speak.

The Legend of Korra - Turf Wars

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" and it's sequel "The Legend of Korra" featured some of the best worldbuilding of any cartoon series I've ever seen. The various societies were rich, and complex, and they included their resident elemental powers with creativity and practicality.

One area the cartoon did not expand on was how certain social matters were addressed, and the Korra finale, which showed Korra joining hands with Asami Sato, the woman she loves, as they step into the Spirit World, was positively subversive in showing a blossoming same sex relationship.

This is from MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS #24, and an early story by Scott Lobdell with art by Dennis Jensen. Shamrock, aka Molly Fitzgerald, vs. Arnim Zola.
I wanted to repost it since it seems to equate "With great power comes great responsibility" to "Must punch bad guys in the face."

It's time for Sparkler's annual kickstarter to fund their next year of comics. They have 3 days left, and they're only a little more than halfway there. They're doing great work, and they need help.
Most of our content is free to read and stream, but a paid magazine membership lets you read ahead of the free serialization, download the content, and support the creators.

Sparkler Monthly is a multimedia, digital shojo/josei magazine of original English-language fiction. Our carefully selected creators are paid advances for their work and go through a thorough editorial process. After a book or audio story is serialized in the magazine, it’s bundled with bonus material and sold as ebooks, limited paperbacks, and/or CDs in the Sparkler Shop (similar to the magazine –> tankoubon system in Japan). In addition, our paperbacks and products can be found at a number of retailers; see our Retail & Libraries page on where to buy, and how to acquire books for your business or library.

The primary audience for Sparkler Monthly is girls and women aged 15 and up, or anyone interested in the rough ballpark of Female Gaze. Our four founders and most of our staff identify as female and are committed to promoting inclusive, fem-positive, and ridiculously fun content. We welcome creators of any gender and are particularly interested in entertaining, engrossing stories that tap into the variety and diversity of fandom.

This is a link to their Kickstarter campaign. The FAQ gives great advice if the options are overwhelming.

I love their content, from scripted audio dramas to comics to light novels. I love getting paperback copies of things I've tried online, so that I can more easily share them with other people.

If you've thought about supporting Sparkler or trying it out, now is the best [and, potentially only] time to do so.
