This is one of those random comments that's nominally related to your post but with information you probably didn't really need to know, but--I believe the yuletide mods use (have written?) some kind of program to do the match ups (possibly with criteria to get as wide a range of fandoms as possible, not sure), which is why they can send it out so quickly.
