when everything else seems unclear
Hey guys, I'm still not dead! Blargh. It has been kind of a weird summer, honestly ... great when there's been swimming and watching random 90s anime with local friends and stretching editorial muscles; not so great when I've been fighting my brain and my words too hard. Classes start a month from tomorrow, and I'm definitely not in a rush but I'm looking forward to it.
Also? As you can see by the icon (on DW, anyway), yeah, Teen Wolf has happened. I'm delighted to find half the internet succumbing with me, since I totally just started watching it over the phone with
chaiminda as a bff bonding exercise ... and I'm seriously amused by all the talk of fannish plagues and the like. People are surprised by this one, really? IDK, guys. As I said on twitter a few days ago, Teen Wolf takes me right back to the days of Buffy and Smallville (which incidentally were my first big fannish-inclusion years, so there's a heavy nostalgia factor) ... except it's all the same show (not as good as Buffy but not nearly as bad as Smallville, particularly in its second season). Although I'll grant, it does seem to sneak up on you. One minute I'm spending all my phone call viewing hours rolling my eyes and mocking Scott's stupid face (and lamenting how much I do not care about lacrosse, sigh), and the next I LOVE EVERYONE and am on the edge of my seat in terror for them (but I still don't give a damn about lacrosse, so that's reassuring anyway).
The major slash pairing is more fanon to me than anything still (no matter how much fanservice the cast does), but I still like them (largely because yes, Stiles is your, my and everyone's favorite and personality clashes are always grand!) this is balanced by how I unexpectedly love the canon OTP, and while some of the characterization in the fic has been frustrating me, there's good stuff happening. Also a lot of really fun self-indulgent werewolf tropes and kinks that I've never really been interested in before, but can't get enough of now. As usual, my primary complaint is PLEASE WRITE MORE OF THE GIRLS, PEOPLE. They are pretty great! And notice that there are several of them, with friendships and rivalries and plenty of stuff to go on for once!
I don't know; I think I needed a really ridiculous, fun fandom, or something. Much as I do love Avengers fandom (and it's so smart and full of lovely, complex character stuff and basically all the best fanwork has to offer), I kept getting tripped up by increasing feelings of professional conflict or something ridiculous like that. And just. There's brilliant work out there, okay, and I want to read more of it? But I'm pouring so much serious creative energy into other places these days. I think I need a break and Avengers fandom is too much like, well, work. At least, right now.
And I'm definitely at burnout point on bandom at long (long) last. I need to take some time to refresh so I can go back and read the stories I'm still super excited about.
It just feels great to have all this fresh fannish energy again. I know that when school starts and I'm working on my thesis and that book I'll probably lose some of that, or at least the time to indulge it ... but this one seems tailor-made to be there when I can take breaks, easy to slip in and out of. And um, fanart's already happening, so.
So yeah, anyway. :) I have all kinds of specific thoughts and feelings that I don't have time to share right now, naturally, and maybe I'll actually write up a response to the finale next week! (Augh.) I don't remember the last time I did that; I miss TV fandoms. This is all so much fun!
