Dear Yuletider,
Okay, so I didn't quite get this up before assignments ... I hope it hasn't caused any stress.
Thank you thank you for writing a story for me! My requests are all for fandoms that I am DEEPLY excited about, and know that whatever you do, I will be delighted. I like prompts, so I always try to provide a fair amount of material, but if your creative energy wants to go a totally different way? Run with it. TBH, my top priority here is that you have fun.
I'll note that while I enjoy a certain amount of angst and tension for spice, my fic preferences tend strongly towards the upbeat, silly or quietly comforting/hopeful, especially for Yuletide. This varies somewhat by fandom, but you know, in general. :)
General likes include pairings getting together(/first times), found families, group/team dynamics, playing with worldbuilding, wacky adventures and happy endings (to the appropriate degree for the individual pairing/canon, naturally). Snarky dialogue and banter. Good communication, and bad communication that gets re-evaluated and resolved. Non-traditional languages/demonstrations of love/friendship. Some tropes (fake relationships!), smart trope subversions, and pastiches/playing with genre conventions.
General DNWs (from my sign-up): non-con, non-canon character death, unrelenting grimness, character bashing, cheating/jealousy, excessive (ie non-canon-typical) violence, A/B/O, soulmarks/mates. I also tend to be kind of picky about AUs and crossovers, so they’re usually best avoided.
Canon-specific details for each of my fandoms (including the prompts from my sign-up), in AO3 tag list order:
Craft Sequence: Tara Abernathy, Catherine Elle, Kai Pohala, Teo Batan
Either gen or femslash would be fantastic. I ship Tara/Cat, Cat/Teo and Kai/Teo, and there's so much to dig into in the world of these books! You DO NOT need to include all four characters.
As far as gen goes, I have a particular love of stories about the rebuilding/social restructuring/etc that happens after the end of canon; I also love the business/legal trappings of the books’ magic system, and exploration of professional relationships/partnerships would be very interesting to me! And after reading FOUR ROADS CROSS, I’m very intrigued by complicated goddess/human relationships. ;)
Tara/Cat
I like the somewhat uneasy partnership between these two; they have different backgrounds and internal issues, but they’re good at working together where their interests align, and I appreciate the way that they both seem inclined to push each other. I’d enjoy a story about them working together through aftermath/rebuilding, set after either THREE PARTS DEAD (as Tara deals with her career change, and Cat with the shift from Justice to Seril) or FOUR ROADS CROSS.
(Also, bonus: feel free to throw Seril into the mix as well, if you'd like, in whatever context you like! I am fascinated by her relationships with each of them.)
Cat/Teo
I would be particularly interested in these two working out their partnership and joint mission during and prior to the events of FULL FATHOM FIVE. They must have been uneasy allies, with their huge philosophical differences; both have such strong personalities and dramatic past experiences. It could be fun to frame this like a heist movie, maybe, with added UST?
Kai/Teo
I really enjoyed the push and pull between these two in FULL FATHOM FIVE, and I think it’d be fascinating to explore a continuing connection between them after the story, perhaps as part of navigating business arrangements in the wake of all the changes on Kavekana? It would be fascinating to watch more interplay between their wildly different philosophies and allegiances.
ADDENDUM: I have not read THE RUIN OF ANGELS. I somehow JUST NOW found out about it. I will DEFINITELY have read it by the time YT stories are out!
Jessica Jones: Jessica Jones, Trish Walker
I very much ship these two. I’d enjoy reading something either pre- or post-show, preferably balancing Jessica’s snarky grittiness with a bit of leavening humor and earnestness from Trish.
Honestly, that about covers my preferences, here! I love the contrast between these two, their fierce love/protectiveness for each other, and their complex and difficult past together. The bit in the last episode when Jess said I love you had me in tears. And I love Trish’s determination to do something more, something to help people, even when she tries to project it onto Jess.
I’d love to see something that builds on that last. Jess might not want to be a superhero as such, but another version of Trish becomes one ... I’m not super familiar with Hellcat from the comics (any era), but something where Trish becomes a hero/vigilante in her own right (with or without attempts to get Jess to team up with her, or to hide her new identity from Jess, or her taking on a mantle she originally made for Jess, etc) could be interesting, whether treated seriously or with a touch of humor. Or, something where she gets more active in a social/political/detective work kind of way (possibly taking some cues from her appearances in the Defenders miniseries, if you watched that, but doesn’t need to be). Casefic with her and (a reluctant, griping) Jess where they also find their friendship turning into something more romantic (or they notice what was already there, etc) would be fabulous.
Or, you know, something completely different! I’m a superhero fan from childhood, and I enjoy detective fiction very much too ... there’s so much to play with in both genres (and I love a good pastiche or meta story, among other things). Just so long as it focuses on their relationship (whether platonic or romantic), nobody gets too deeply damaged (beyond what happens in the show), and things end on a reasonably optimistic (if probably snarky) note, I will be thrilled.
(In re: the general Marvel Netflix universe... I’ve watched all of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Defenders, and none of Daredevil or Iron Fist. I love Luke, and his supporting cast. And Jessica’s. Based on Defenders, I’m lukewarm on Daredevil and dislike Iron Fist quite a bit. And I’m not interested in/made uncomfortable by the lingering Orientalism of The Hand et al.)
Wayfarers: Sidra, Pepper, Taklen Bre Salae
I desperately want to read more about these characters building relationships and lives together in their own ways. I totally ship Sidra/Pepper (in a vee-shaped poly sort of situation with Blue, because Pepper/Blue is important), and also Sidra/Tak, although the whole chosen family aspect is the most important bit for me.
I honestly hardly know where to start with the things I loved about A CLOSE AND COMMON ORBIT, and these three characters and their relationships with each other. The meaning of identity and personhood is a favorite theme, as is people from vastly different backgrounds (and with different personalities and priorities) learning to coexist and loving each other. The importance of a piece of media (a fannish experience!) to Pepper’s survival and identity! Sidra creating a space for herself, her way; making something really new rather than either falling back on her past or conforming to other peoples’ ideas of how she should live! Tak’s gender and the related social norms (and the way those interacted with their choice to live in such a multicultural, less traditional setting), and also their past with academia and the different choices they made there. Playing with any of that would be delightful.
Also, I loved the whole core cast of ACACO, and I loved loved loved the entire concept of Sidra’s bar. So inclusion of these things is heavily encouraged where appropriate. ;)
One specific gen idea that could be interesting, if probably painful, would be a reconnection between these characters and the crew of the Wayfarer, post-ACACO. Sidra isn't Lovelace isn't Lovey. How would everyone come to terms with that? And as for specific character dynamics ...
Sidra/Pepper
I loved how contentious these two were, and how much they loved each other even as they dealt with some pretty difficult disagreements and misunderstandings. Both of them had to learn how to be, for some value of the term, human … but their experiences, and the conclusions they drew from them, were often so different! I’d especially like something post-book, I think … now that Sidra has her own place, her own direction, I’d really enjoy seeing them continue that trajectory. Whether in a romantic direction or not, honestly.
Sidra/Tak
These two had a lot of coming to terms to do ,but I especially loved the bit where Tak would take Sidra out and be understanding of her different needs and interests. That willingness to learn and adapt, especially after the initial shock, was lovely. It might be nice to have a mid-book story where they do other kinds of exploring together. Maybe Tak takes Sidra on a date, and she gets to learn about that and decide whether she’s into the concept? (Maybe in her own way?)
(Bonus for continuing to explore Sidra’s sensation-analogue memory library … ;))
Wayward Children: Jack Wolcott, Jill Wolcott, Kade Bronson
For this fandom, I'd really prefer gen. There are SO MANY stories I'd love to read in this universe, set at any point in, before or after the series. I love these three characters, also, but you don't need to include all of them.
In fact, if you feel like running with it, I have one idea for which you would not need to include ANY of my requested characters, and that would be 100% fine by me. I am totally dying for stories that put characters from other stories (like Sarah Williams from Labyrinth, Alice Liddell, Dorothy Gale, Susan Pevensie ... even Gillian Marks from the October Daye series) into this universe.
I have any number of thoughts for these characters! What would the Home be like under Kade’s management, after Eleanor finally goes back through her Door? Or, might he find another Door, one that suits him better now and accepts him for who he is? What other shenanigans does/did he get into in the Home, especially involving Jack as well? (Snarky misfit queer kids, be still my heart.) Going into his backstory would be interesting too, but I think I’d prefer a story that wasn’t set entirely pre-book.
Much as I loved DOWN AMONG THE STICKS AND BONES, there’s quite a lot to potentially fill in about Jack and Jill’s first tenure in the Moors, and how they became who they did. I’d love it all! And of course, I’m desperately curious about what happens after they go back. What state do they find things in? Is Jack welcomed back by the people of the village, or does it become the siblings against the world? I have a very soft spot for sibling relationships and would certainly be interested in a story where the twins build a new relationship, post-Jill’s-resurrection, if you feel like taking on that amount of damage. (Also, I know I said gen, but Jack/OFC is great, although I’d prefer not to have a totally romance-centric story.)
And if they stay in the Moors and finish growing up there ... what happens the next time a child or children come stumbling through that Door?
In addition to/combination with the crossover idea I mentioned in my original sign-up, which I’m definitely excited about (and the list of characters from other stories that I provided are my favorite candidates), I’m also deeply curious about the Home’s sibling institution in Maine; the one for children who didn’t enjoy their journey/don’t want to go back through their Door. What’s it like there? Who are those kids, and what are their reasons? (Especially bearing in mind the fact that Doors are supposed to open for children who resonate with their particular worlds?) And what happens if the inhabitants, or some inhabitants, of the two Homes meet? (Is it possible that someone changes their mind and gets transferred, or gets sent to the wrong place somehow?)
Okay, that was quite a lot of ideas. I really hope it’s not too overwhelming! I have a lot of thoughts, but I am so interested in yours, whether or not they bear any relation to my rambling above. Optional details are 100% optional. Happy Yuletiding, and thank you again! <3 <3 <3
