oh, make it magnificent
I've been sitting my mother down and watching Firefly with her, which is nice. I don't think I've watched it in, oh, six months? Mmmm. Of course, people will call and interrupt.
So, thought I might post my Yuletide nominations. This is what I wound up with:
Desert Peach
Dykes To Watch Out For
Excalibur (1988 comic)
From Eroica With Love
RPF - Nautical
Strangers in Paradise
All comics, except for the RPF . . . go figure. I added Excalibur to the list, as well as Desert Peach. (Well, it was already there, but only because I suggested it two years ago: I'm pretty sure it's never been offered or requested, and the very underdeveloped character list had never been added to.)
Actually, I think I might have to go redo it, because I actually nominated "RPF - Pirates and Explorers," and then they changed it.
Now I'm thinking about what I might request. Here are a few thoughts . . .
1. From Eroica With Love - Dorian, Klaus (slash)
I've been an Eroica fan for a couple of years, but it really hit me a few months ago, so I'm seriously tempted to request them. I'd like to see if someone could get them together in a believable way. But that's no easy feat, and I'm pretty damn picky about characterization . . . I'd rather see in-character preslash, the usual banter, than out-of-character 'shippiness (or even smut, siiiigh).
2. RPF - Nautical - Mary Read, Anne Bonny (femslash or gen)
I didn't wind up requesting this last year, but oh, it's a tempting one. I mean, pirates, and women in drag . . . if they could be slashed, that would be lovely. But hell, a gen story of female companionship with historical details would be bloody fantastic, too.
3. Strangers in Paradise - Tambi, Casey (femslash)
In the last couple of issues, it seemed clear to me that these two were together. Talk about something I'd never have predicted! And damn, is it adorable. I would love to either see them getting together, or something set after the end of the comic.
4. Desert Peach - Pfirsich Rommel, Udo Schmidt, Rosen Kavalier (slash or gen)
Any combination, any era (Paris, Africa, postwar). Pfirsich/Rosen "romance" is always fun; Udo and Rosen butting heads is funny, but the things they have in common are also lovely and interesting; and well, Udo has this adorable little straight-boy crush on Pfirsich. Man, anyone who could write for this fandom would be my hero.
5. Excalibur - Rachel Summers, Kitty Pryde (femslash)
My pet femslash pairing, and this year, I've found a way to make it eligable! (I think I actually requested this the first year, when we were allowed to request obscure pairings out of bigger fandoms.) Plus, I am so tired of contemporary Xbooks, and would love some wacky old Excalibur hijinks. Excalibur!Rachel still had angst, of course, but she was starting to pull herself together; Kitty was blossoming, all the way across the ocean from the team that made her its cute little "junior" member . . . and they were the best of (subtexty) friends.
6. Deadwood - Trixie, Alma (femslash or gen)
Finally, a new fandom (well, new for me). In all the complex, disturbing world of Deadwood, Trixie is absolutely my favorite character. She's smart, embittered, and caring in spite of her cynicism. She has her own sense of loyalty, and I'm fascinated by her complicated relationship with rich, squeamish (sometimes) Alma. I'd be interested to see them explored further, on whatever level.
7. Lymond Chronicles - Lymond, Philippa (het)
I want something happy and fluffy, set after Checkmate. I love the series to death, but it is so painful. More than a year after finishing it, I could still really use some catharsis.
8. Runaways - Karolina, Xavin (femslash)
I'm still a Karolina/Nico shipper at heart, and I am very skeptical about Xavin. (I tend to read hir as a man, who fully identifies as a man, but happens to be able to transform into a female body in order to keep his lesbian girlfriend happy. It bothers me.) A lot of people, however, seem to have really embraced this pairing: they even read Xavin as an interesting, gender-and-sex-fluid sort of transperson. This is interesting, and I am starting to like hir as a character for other reasons. I would love some nice fic to help convince me about the pairing. Preferably set on earth, among the Runaways, rather than in space during the time they were away.
Fortunately, I have plenty of time to narrow this down . . .
I want to pinch-hit this year . . . so while I do want to stretch myself a bit, in what I offer, I also want to be careful. Last year I had a really difficult assignment, and while it was rewarding, it did take me right up to the deadline and stress me the heck out. Hmmm. I have thoughts about what I might offer, but that'll be easier to work out once the fandom list gets finalized.
Meanwhile, some other people have started posting their thoughts, which I always love to read about. ^^
Well, if my mother would get off the phone, we could finish watching "The Train Job." And then I can play with my brand new Macbook. *so happy*
