other fires were burning too
Hey guys, hey! I'm kind of wiped out ... it's been an intense few months for me, so naturally, I wind up working overtime two days before I finally get to take a vacation. (Not that I'm not extremely grateful, mind; my job has some substantial perks, and perhaps the biggest is more than a week off at the end of the year. I'll miss it.) I have so many plans for this time, though I'm probably going to have to start by sleeping a lot.
I have quite a bit of art stuff on the brain right now. (Well, as usual.) For one thing, I'm kind of pondering selling some original work for the first time ever. It occurs to me that I really have no idea how to set prices for something like that. /o\
Also, I'm getting behind on my
yuletart commenting, but if you haven't yet, you should go check out the amazing work that's been going up! And speaking of output, I hope
yuletide has gone well for those of you participating this year, in spite of the stress. ♥ The rush of frantic posts over the last week or so has made me a bit wistful.
Here's that fannish year meme that's been going around, for the heck of it:
Your main fandom of the year?
I was awfully quiet in fandom this year! Too much original art time (if there is such a thing). I'd say the DCU actually, in terms of enthusiasm (if not either output or reading material) ... I've been readling a lot of Bat-books and staring at a lot of fanart (particularly of Batwoman and the Question, mmm) all year long. Of course, bandom's a big contender again too, if only in the last few months. :D
Your favorite film watched this year?
I saw relatively few films this year. I'd say probably The Secret of Kells, which I saw back in March? Breathtakingly beautiful animation.
Your favorite book read this year?
This has also been a terrible year for reading prose books, tbh (errr, I've been a little focused). I'd say N.K. Jemisin's The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is clearly ahead of the (small) pack, and for comics, my favorite stuff has mostly been online this year? I'd go with Family Man (the first book of which was printed on paper this summer) and Dresden Codak, which I read in its entirety a few months ago.
Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
Okay, see, that's hard. I really can't pick between MCR's "Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys" and Janelle Monae's "The Archandroid" (usually accompanied by "Metropolis: The Chase Suite"), with Anais Mitchell (et al)'s "Hadestown" coming in a close-ish second. It has been an amazing year for concept albums.
Your favorite TV show of the year?
Probably Community? I watched the entire first season in the course of about a week during
sweetvalleyslut's visit, and oh, my heart. :D However, I also watched the first two and a half seasons of TNG at last, and I adored that too (really need to get back to it). So one new, and one old.
Your favorite DW community of the year?
white_lotus is awesome. They're holding an A:tLA multimedia gift exchange! My heart is won.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Does the Killjoys-verse count?
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
There was a lot of social justice fail, much of it coming from within fandom itself. :/
Your TV boyfriend of the year?
Uh, Abed. Do I really have to explain?
Your TV girlfriend of the year?
From where I'm sitting right now, I'd say Nikita (as played by Maggie Q). Fucking hell. *_*
Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Look alive, sunshine ... :D :D :D :D
The most missed of your old fandoms?
Well, I was feeling pretty sad about the bandom decline early on in the year, but things have picked up beautifully now. And most of my fandoms I don't have to "miss," because I'm rarely so well-read that there isn't new fic for me to go back and find. /o\
The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
I keep hearing good things about Lost Girls. Also, my roommate came home babbling about Sanctuary last night, and I keep thinking I ought to give it more of a chance.
Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
How can I possibly choose? More MCR concerts with my fangirls! THE LEGEND OF KORRA. An ongoing Batwoman title. 2011 looks amazing from a fannish standpoint (among others!).
I've put in my dues at the sketchbook for the evening, so I think I'm going to go curl up with a good story. If you're in bandom and haven't noticed that
jjtaylor has posted The Detective's Secret and the Mystery of the Dancing Flowers (AKA the sequel to Gerard Way's (Vampire) Detective Agency), well, wake up and smell the coriander. :D I have been waiting for this story for months. :DDD
Also, I just watched the Christmas episode of Leverage, and it snowed today. (At last!) I think some holiday spirit might finally be seeping in, for real.
