we'll watch the sky explode tonight
Nnnrgh. I was totally going to come home and be productive today, but that was before part of the subway caught fire(?) and I took an extra hour to get home. In the rain. Plus, someone sat on my cornflakes. :(
At least I will likely sleep tonight! Yesterday I had weird dreams and tossed and turned a lot. Too much Hellboy, possibly. Or just the humidity. Bah.
I do not wish to whine overmuch, however (lol, too late)! After all, I have the new Empires album to listen to (I'm not head-over-heels, like a lot of people, but I do really like it). Also, there was this particularly awesome fic wot I read today. Being so new to this fandom still, I've been mostly reading fic that's at least a year old (I will never, ever catch up), but sometimes my eye catches on something recent. Particularly when it's permanent genderswitch fic that deals with gender and identity issues and all the sorts of SRS BUSINESS stuff that gives some fans hives, but not me! It makes me flaily. :D
Additionally, I had a fucking fantastic weekend.
sweetvalleyslut and I spent half of it wandering around doing dorky tourist things, and the other half vegging and watching LotMS and Wiseguy. (My roomie despairs of our taste; took him long enough.) Of course, attending the Neil Gaiman lecture with
omnia_mutantur was a serious highlight. I give up, okay? I really do want to BE that man. (Well, possibly some odd combination of him and Carla Speed McNeil. But you know.) He talked about comics being a medium not a genre and not over-privileging authorial intent and many many other awesome things and I almost bounced out of my seat. I will be buying the DVD to listen to while I draw.
I re-watched the second half of "The Boiling Rock" while ironing last night. Ohhh, Avatar. In a pair of episodes that basically depict a boy-bonding-adventure (and a delightfully slashy one, mmm), and actually leaves out both the central female main characters? First we have a girlfriend, one who is being rescued by said boys, basically save their half-baked plan by being completely kickass and getting shit done. (And in spite of being a prisoner, she holds her own and is never once actually HELPLESS.) Then? The boys are saved again by the other girlfriend, the jilted one who is unsentimental and snarky about saving his ass, because she cares (enough to commit treason!) but isn't going to get all broken up about it. The two most threatening adversaries in the episode? Also female, and one of them also betrays her country for the sake of friendship.
That makes four seriously formidable, awesome female characters (well, I actually don't think Azula is all that awesome, since she's all badass and no depth, but still) . . . in an episode that doesn't even include the two main heroines of the show (who are similarly strong). And the boys are great too, particularly with their feeeeeelings. Oh, show of my HEART.
I should go find something nice for a bedtime story now. Productivity tomorrow?
