why don't you come get a closer look?
Whee, fanart. This prompting thing is really working for me! I'm having a lot of fun playing with requests and drawing in new fandoms, and I have a lot of new energy to throw into my larger obligations. Here are the two pieces I finished this week; thanks for helping me out, guys.
For
rhivolution, as requested:

Nessie! I was really charmed by this idea. Also, apparently dinosaurs are kind of difficult to draw, but I didn't let myself fuss over it too much (trying to keep some version of the spirit of the "sketch" prompt, ahaha). Also, whee, shading is so soothing.
For
jjtaylor, who asked for "Kate Beckett anything:"

I suppose that making a comic and adding a whole second character kind of goes against any form of the spirit of a "sketch" prompt. /o\ This did afford me the opportunity to attempt to portray my very favorite aspect of the show: the Castle/Beckett dynamic. I love their push-and-pull so much (and I'm a little concerned to see what will become of it after that finale) ... particularly when Beckett comes out on top, I won't lie. Also, mmm, cookies. I want one. (I was thinking about making some myself tonight, but then I realized we have no baking sheets. Fail.)
That proper spring weather I was hoping for has materialized! It's pretty glorious--bright and clear and a little cool--and all it took was a day of massive thunderstorms and tornadoes across the state. What.
So I've signed up to post a few DC comics recs per week over at
fanart_recs this month; I think I'll collect the links here when I've finished. (I'll be doing Avatar: The Last Airbender in July, as well.) This was apparently apt timing on my part, because the comics blogosphere has completely lost its head over DC's latest plans to reboot EVERYTHING ... well, most of it (and they're being vague about specifics) ... this fall. There's precious little confirmed information just yet (creative teams from a handful of the 50+ new/relaunched titles) and a whole lot of rumors flying around; the rumors sound almost uniformly terrible, but it's anyone's guess at this point. I just want my Batwoman, dammit. (Actually, that's a lie--when did I get so overinvested in a large chunk of the DCU?--but it's sort of my bottom line.)
Also, seriously, why do they keep letting Jim Lee design costumes? I mean, I understand that a lot of people apparently like him as an artist (I am not one of those people), but ... ack.
A couple of rather more pleasant topical links, if only to cheer myself up:
-DC superheroines as Joan Jett & The Runaways, by Cliff Chiang
-A blogger convinces me that Steve Trevor really is a pretty great love interest for Wonder Woman. I really enjoyed that article. (Also, it lead
sweetvalleyslut to make John/Aeryn comparisons, which was interesting.)
In other general news, I'm most of the way through the first season of Fringe, and it's getting pretty fascinating! I am thinking of picking up Parks and Recreation as well. And this week I acquired more information on my grad school loan (please let the forms be on time too), a prospective roommate for the fall, and the congratulations of several (mildly dubious) ivy league scientists on my indie comics program.
How are you, bbs? Happy Friday!

Also, interesting blog about Wonder Woman! I had no idea her romance subplot was so shoujo.

Hee, I hadn't thought of it that way! There's rather a lot less cherry blossoms & pining involved than in most of the shoujo manga I've read ... then again, I did just read a post the other week that went on about how Tuxedo Kamen was always cool with Sailor Moon saving him and was proud of her (superior) power and strength. I can kind of see it.

I haven't really looked into this Flashpoint thing, but I keep seeing it pop up on Tumblr and just... :| The DCU obviously needs changes, big ones, but I just don't really trust them to do it well. :| Hoping I'm just being pessimistic (rare), but not really holding my breath. Don't wanna lose Batwoman, either.

I haven't paid a lot of attention to the Flashpoint event itself (I hate company-wide events as a rule, ugh, boring and histrionic and forcing you to buy a dozen titles you wouldn't ordinarily read in order to follow the story). But this "relaunching 52 titles from #1" thing ... I agree that the DCU needs some major changes, but mostly as far as inclusiveness and telling better stories goes? They still seem to be spotlighting mostly white & male heroes, looking at that Justice League illustration that's being slapped on all the press (even though they are giving Mr. Terrific his own book, and apparently there are another seven League members not shown). And I just ... don't have any particular confidence that yet another massive melodramatic "EVERYTHING CHANGES" publicity stunt will actually lead to better storytelling ... but we'll see?
(This sort of thing makes me particularly worried about legacy characters to whom I'm attached; what if relaunching these titles means going back to a lot of "originals"? Then again, DC's claiming "more diversity." IDEK. So much fuss.)
