Whoops, Chocolate Box reveals are here already! I have so many comments to leave, which I intend to do today. But first, I'm excited to share my all-X-Men slate of contributions. I've been feeling such a fannish resurgence for the last few months, so I ... pretty much could not resist.

Mutant gal pals, and more! )

Also, the [community profile] rarefemslashexchange archive is open now, and worth a look! I do believe I'm going to enjoy wrapping up my much-needed three-day weekend with a lot of fannish appreciation.

Happy New Year, friends. I really hope 2022 is an improvement!

I may do some kind of personal ramble/reflection thing later, but for now I thought I'd just go ahead and share some stuff I made, since we have Yuletide and Multifandom Doodle reveals today!

reluctant bedfellows thumbnail

Five doodles in four fandoms under here! )

That's a pile of art, and yet, just a FRACTION of the prompts I wanted to draw for. I have a whole list leftover, and I really hope this event runs again, because it was so much fun. I would heavily encourage anyone who likes to draw or doodle to join in if it does, regardless of whether you think of yourself as "good" or "an artist." It truly was for everyone, at every skill level, and was such a fun, open-hearted, enthusiastic experience across the board.

And then there's Yuletide.

A short ramble. )

Once again, I did not manage to treat, and was in fact writing furiously down to the wire on my main assignment. Perhaps by next year I will have figured out some better time management strategies? Or at least nailed down a better regimen of ADHD meds.

I've also only read a small fraction of what I wanted to from the archive, naturally. I hope to share some recs later on.

Anyway, more personal stuff later, maybe. I'm feeling jazzed up about working on my [community profile] rarefemslashexchange assignment, and of course, my OTHER favorite exchange, [community profile] chocolateboxcomm, opened for sign-ups today. Making things! It's the best part of every year, and seems like a great way to kick off this one.
reflectedeve: a concerned Gerard Way (drawn by me) wonders 'now where did I put that holy water?' (holy water - gerard way - why comics)
Have you ever been excited about something to the point that you're balking at getting started, because you don't want the anticipation to be over quite yet? Yeah, that's me right now. My Yuletide assignment is a delight and I'm about to do my usual deep dive canon review. Whee, I say.

I'm very sleepy this morning because I was up a little late getting cat pee out of clothing. Again. I have a system now, although I really hope I may not have to use it too much more? Sigh. Poor Eugenides. I guess that's one way to convince me to get rid of extra gift bags and odds and ends cluttering up my closet floor that I was probably never going to use.

Also I rode to work on my bike in the rain this morning, which might have something to do with it. It's ... really difficult to convince myself that I should take the crowded, steamy bus (with, no doubt, at least a couple people flouting masking rules) when I can get here so much faster on my own, with a little endorphin boost to boot. Even if it means getting soaked.

Back to fannish things ... [community profile] remixrevival (and Remix Madness) revealed creators a few days ago! What a fun exchange; I could wish the time of year were a little more convenient, but still, it's definitely something I'll want to do again (and may try and nudge others toward). I love how collaborative it feels, how it both allows me to pay homage to other fans' creative work, and stretch myself in directions I might not have come up with on my own. Similar to my enjoyment of Big Bangs, but with more choice on my part, and a bit more parity too.

Happy New Year (I hope)! It's the season for holiday fanwork reveals. I wasn't as prolific as I was hoping this season, since life kind of got in the way, but I did write my one [community profile] yuletide fic and contribute two pieces of fanart to the [tumblr.com profile] startreksecretsanta.

Or Something (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Kim Pine/Envy Adams)
Set after the events of the film; Kim Pine is just stopping by her unassuming, mostly-deserted local watering hole to grab a drink and avoid her grad school applications, when to her surprise, she runs into the former frontwoman of The Clash At Demonhead scribbling away in a notebook in a corner booth. Well, bothering random rockstars is as good a procrastination method as any, right?

Writing this pairing was a fun challenge, especially since I primarily stuck to movie canon, in which Kim and Envy don't particularly interact ... and their characterization is somewhat streamlined. I did wind up pulling a little bit of background from the comics, playing off Envy's history as an anime fan, with the result that I couldn't resist including bonus fanart. )

dancing with the devil (Star Trek: DS9, Elim Garak/Benjamin Sisko)
For this, I wound up playing off the first part of the quote referenced by the episode 'In The Pale Moonlight,' one of my very favorites from all of DS9.

you can let your monster out (with me) (Star Trek: TNG, Deanna Troi/K'Ehleyr)
Ahaha, so this came out like some kind of bodice-ripping romance novel cover. However, after rewatching the TNG episode 'The Emissary,' I think I might need to revisit this pairing, because damn! I did always love K'Ehleyr; it's a shame she only gets two appearances.

Ooh, I have had a week. It's been long and tiring and mostly dark and rainy to boot, and I've been singularly unproductive in spite of just having taken on some new (creative) professional responsibilities. This is about as grateful as I've been for Friday in awhile, especially since the [community profile] femslashex archive opens today at 8pm EST! There are currently 179 new pieces of f/f fanfic & fanart all ready to go; I'm so excited! (My own contribution will be here, though naturally I'll do a post here as well when I may.)

I'd say things have slowed down a bit, but that's not true so much as that I've been working more on deadlines than at my own pace. Here's a small roundup of exceptions and the like ...

thumbnail previews of five different images

Revisiting Rachel Summers. )

Oh, speaking of X-Men comics, I've also been listening avidly to Rachel and Miles X-Plain the X-Men, which does what it says on the tin in an entertaining, clever and deeply nerdy way. Highly recommended.

Meanwhile, on a more contemporary note: A tiny Braeden tribute. )

Last but very definitely not least, my contributions to the little [tumblr.com profile] fanartremixexchange! Which deserved to be bigger, so I really hope the idea catches on! And for extra fun, I was matched with ataratah. ;) )

Huh, I've been doing a lot of color work lately; I suppose that's good practice? I'm never fully satisfied with any of it (except sometimes the flats), though; I might make an effort to go back to more of my b&w inks for the next little while. Coming up: [livejournal.com profile] tw_fallharvest, [livejournal.com profile] teenwolf_bb, [tumblr.com profile] allydiareversebang, and [tumblr.com profile] teenwolffemslashexchange. Um. Oops?

So the other day I saw this post fancasting Rihanna as Crowley and Lupita Nyong'o as Aziraphale on my tumblr dash, and had to try and give it a shot. Could've done a better job with the shading, but it was super fun to do nonetheless! I should make a point of drawing more fancasts in the future.

Summer's ending, and with it, I'm supposed to be doing less fanart, but ... that doesn't really seem to be happening, does it? I'm currently signed up for [tumblr.com profile] fanartremixexchange, [community profile] femslashex, and [livejournal.com profile] tw_fallharvest. All my assignments are super exciting! And of course, here I am producing completely random things.

Scott McCall is a Magical Girl. )

Also, speaking of fanart, Teen Wolf, and Sailor Moon, I'm meant to be reccing the latter on [community profile] fanart_recs this month (and I'm behind! I need to get another post up, stat). Here's a roundup of my Teen Wolf recs from last month! )

It occurs to me that I know nothing about any incoming new shows this fall. Anything you guys are excited about?
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (Default)
So I almost didn't watch the current season of Teen Wolf (which might have been a wise choice) because I was so sad and frustrated about Allison Argent's death. She was my favorite character, and I was not at all happy with how she was handled in 3B; even given that Crystal Reed wanted to leave the show, she was one of the main characters and deserved a much better closing arc. So as the new season was approaching, I started daydreaming about a spin-off. I mean, we have werewolves and banshees ... why not ghosts?

It's a shame that I can't find a functional reversebang, so I can try to get someone to fic this properly ... but I'm just going to go ahead and make so much art.

Here's a montage of 'excerpts' from the 'pilot episode.' )

And of course, there's the promotional image I posted awhile back, and ghostly embraces! [personal profile] ataratah even drew this lovely piece based on my original musing. I plan to do a whole bunch more "excerpt" images (although probably not another whole episode's worth). I guess I kind of needed an ongoing fandom project? :D?

Also, speaking of [personal profile] ataratah, here's one more piece of TW fanart based on a hilariously awesome prompt from her. Werewolf cabbage babies! )

Gotta dash (new temp job, whee), but before I forget - you guys REALLY SHOULD consider signing up for [community profile] femslashex! It's a MULTIFANDOM FIC AND ART EXCHANGE, focused on pairings with no canonically male-identified characters! There are so many amaaaazing fandoms. :D I'm so excited! It's great that more fests are starting to include art. <3

Also, this month I'm reccing Teen Wolf over on [community profile] fanart_recs, which is a great comm you should know about. I'll post a round-up here when I'm done. (Next month I'm doing Sailor Moon!)

Another huge fanart roundup, courtesy of the summer where I only have the energy to manage job search stuff, draw fanart, and let my whole professional identity lie pretty much fallow. :D?

Okay, that sounded a little ... yeah. Actually, things are looking up in a big way! I have a pretty big deal second interview tomorrow, for a position I'm genuinely excited for which also pays better than I'd had any hope of, so. Fingers crossed. And I am having a ball with letting myself soak more or less exclusively in fannish material for a bit. :)

Aaand last but not least, here are two more pieces for my birthday female characters doodle fest: the Queen and the Soldier (Serenity/Pluto) and Utena's birthday present. I know it's been months, but I'm still carrying the remaining prompts around, so you never know when more might pop up. :)

I can't believe there hasn't been any MCU fanart in all of this. I should fix that. Although I do kind of have (original) porn to be drawing, too.

At some point I really need to check around and see if there are any exciting bigbangs or reversebangs I want to participate in. I miss doing fic illustration so much ...
reflectedeve: Worried Rachel Summers/Phoenix, reaching out to touch a smiling, out-of-costume Kitty Pryde. (checking in - crosstime caper)
I miss you, dreamwidth. :( (Livejournal too, although I think that's a lost cause.) It's been a rough start to the year, struggling with unemployment and the usual emotional toll of the season. Social media has been especially hard.

Things have been looking up the last week or so though! I've been feeling really inspired to do fanart, although I have a lot of other creative commitments that generally take precedence. This weekend I took a Teen Wolf break. ;) I continue to really enjoy this half-season (to my continuing surprise, tbh).

Kira, Allison, Lydia and Cora display their various powers and weapons

I just really wanted to draw some badass supernatural teenage girls! And mess around with shiny coloring, something I hadn't done in awhile. Per usual, not at all sure I like it (the colors, I mean), so IDK, but it was still fun to work on. I took some liberties, especially with Lydia, since her abilities mostly haven't been very visually evident. Also, I'm hoping that at some point we'll get to see her use them with the practiced confidence she deploys in most social situations.

This second image contains SPOILERS for the end of episode 3x19, and a warning for blood/injury. Also FEELINGS. )

I find that I'm missing doing fic illustration a whole lot ... I wish TW fandom was producing more inspiring work. :/

There will be time for life updates later, but for now ... have some relatively quick TV fanart drawn as warm-ups/procrastination on my real work.

I enjoyed last week’s episode of Teen Wolf, possibly because of the blessed absence of all the various characters from season 3A that I could never really care about (although of course the alpha twins will be back tonight, bah). The nightmare-within-a-nightmare thing was overdone, sure, but there was some good character stuff. I love the parents being in the know now ... seriously, could we maybe have the Melissa McCall and Sheriff Stilinski show? That would be a fresh take on all the teen supernatural business, to have it through the parents’ perspective. Yes please.

And there was even some silly stuff! Like the introduction of Kira and her father. I had the irresistible image of a show where the Nemeton, contrary to everyone’s expectations, did not turn out to be a magnet for evil killer beasties, just ... regular folks, albeit not quite folks, who start moving into the neighborhood. The creature from the black lagoon next door; the mermaid in your Geometry class (wheeling herself around, Lori Lemaris-style). Conflicts that would be more at home in a sitcom than a horror movie!

You know; a supernatural beacon for supernatural creatures. )

I’m sure we’ll get our usual serving of grimdark instead. So glad I have some reliably fantastic shows as well ... I really haven’t seen nearly enough meta about Elementary 3.13 yet! I had a predictable reaction )

Well, there are other things I should be drawing, probably. Hope everyone’s weathering this bizarre winter well (if you’re in this hemisphere)! <3

I don't think I have the energy for a really thorough round-up post today ... I had unusual and awful insomnia last night, and today has already been full of family and running around. But I wanted to commemorate the end of 2013 somewhere, at least a little. It's been a fairly significant year, a whole mix of things.

Things that happened this year. )

Well, I should get back to the doings of the day, but! My second [community profile] yuletart contribution, an Allison & Lydia-centric Teen Wolf ensemble piece, went up a few days ago.

And, here's a roundup of the year's fanart. )

Happy New Year, dear friends. I hope that 2014 is full of good things for all of you! Much love.

Cecil Baldwin, as played by Danny Pudi, in the NCVR booth

Sometimes you just have to post something to force yourself to stop tweaking it. I am not totally satisfied with this first piece of Welcome to Night Vale fanart ... hopefully I can improve on it? But here's a stab at Cecil Baldwin as played by Danny Pudi, because I find that particular casting kind of irresistible.

Mmmm, fanart, how I miss you. I continue to find myself completely swamped with projects, which I am certainly not complaining about, but still. I really want to do some kind of holiday exchange or something. I don't suppose anyone's heard anything about [community profile] yuletart this year?

I had another thought, but ... IDK if people would be into it. I was thinking it might be fun to do some kind of tiny gift exchange with various of you lovely people. Kind of a mini-reversebang thing ... say, you write me a comment-ficlet with one of our shared fandoms/pairings/etc (probably I will post a suggested list or something), and I do a little illustration for you in return. Would there be any interest in such a thing?

I don't know, it's just an idea right now ... but per usual, I miss fannish participation (and my fanpeople)! And I'm in a multifannish mood.

In other news, I spilled tea on my poor old laptop a few days ago, and now I no longer have an apostrophe or down-arrow key. Not a debilitating predicament, but pretty annoying! Bah.
reflectedeve: Toph punching Katara in the arm, backs to the viewer. (this is how I communicate affection)
Hrm, I am several days behind on [community profile] snowflake_challenge! Need to catch up. The thing is, Day 8 was about setting fannish goals, and ... I don't feel like I can do that right now. I mean, I suppose I could set a goal for the summer, but I think it's better if I don't even think about it. Thesis.

Day 9, on the other hand, was awesome ... it just took me two days to complete: In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something. I drew some fanart! Inspired by someone's Day 4 wishlist, because I love the whole circle of fannish gift-giving. So [personal profile] mammothluv wished for
"crossover fanworks of any of my favorite ladies." We seem to have a fair number of favorite ladies in common, so that took a bit of narrowing down ...

Renee Montoya teams up with yet another Kate. )

Day 10's challenge--rec a creator--is also awesome, and I want to do it justice! I may post again later today. Right now there are things I need to get moving on. I have the day off (breaktime work schedule is kind of nice), and I think I'm going to hop the free commuter bus a couple towns over and work in a cafe with fewer distractions. There is never, never enough time!

Still, David Bowie announced this week that he's putting out a new album in March. There are always, always things to look forward to, jfc.
reflectedeve: Worried Rachel Summers/Phoenix, reaching out to touch a smiling, out-of-costume Kitty Pryde. (checking in - crosstime caper)
Well, 2013 starts in an hour, and I'm sick and taking a rest before I join my family for the countdown and toasting and all that jazz. (It's not that bad, but I think my poor little pseudo-niece is disappointed in my lack of energy. I can't figure out why I'm her favorite entertainment in the first place; possibly because I listen endlessly?)

This year has been a progression for me; I think I've grown a great deal on a number of levels. (Also I started teaching myself to draw porn! Clearly a huge accomplishment.) The new year will be the year I finish school for good (as far as I have planned) and launch ... the rest of my life, I suppose. Which could be daunting, but headcold aside, I feel energized and ready to take it all on (starting with my thesis, of course). I don't have resolutions so much as ongoing goals. And all the creative projects ever.

I wish you guys all the best in this new year; I can't wait to spend more time with some of you and to see all the amazing things you produce! Absentee though I've been this year, I adore fandom and my circle and appreciate all the little ways you always help me through my rough patches. <3

It's awfully puny, but here's a roundup of this year's fanart. )

And here's one last little thing for the year (not that it's in any way seasonal) ... the Warehouse 13/Sanctuary crossover I've been pondering, featuring H.G. and Tesla. (Ugh, Tesla! I have failed your face, or your face has failed me ... challenge accepted for sometime in the future!)

So yeah, that happened. (The lurker in the alleyway is Derek. And no, there was no contextual reason whatsoever for me to be wearing a towel.)

Hi internet! I have missed you. Miraculously, I am basically done with all my immediate deadlines more than a week before the end of the semester (although, you know, there's still my thesis). So I can breathe a little, sort of, and daydream about the actual fanart I'll draw on my break.

There have been a few exciting developments around lately! Every once in awhile someone on my feed retweets stupidly adorable photos of the Teen Wolf cast on the season three set! (As you can see above, my brain remains eaten!) Also, what is this about a Stiles kiss, internet? Surely there is more context than just the slightly hypnotizing gif I found myself staring at earlier?

Also I really enjoy this resource post [personal profile] brownbetty put together with werewolf lore and various ephemera. Ugh I want to make things.

On another side of things, I'm having feelings about the Star Trek: Into Darkness trailer, of course. Has anyone not seen it yet? Ah well, here, spoilers. )

Anyway, I'm sitting here drinking tea and singing along to old Christmas Vespers recordings while one of my classmates attempts to put her website together and frequently raises her voice to the internet in general. It's been a fantastic semester and generally just a really good time in my life. <3 to you all!

Okay, so it's Monday ... and it's Teen Wolf finale day, only I won't get to watch until tomorrow night. (Which probably means staying as away from the internet as I can mange for all the time in between!) Tension! Suspense! STIIIIIIIIILES! Here, have some extremely silly cracked-out fanart, courtesy of a prompt from [personal profile] ataratah.

Jinkies! )

Well, anyway, it feels good to be doing that again, even if I need to slow it down and go focus much harder on my other work, like, immediately.

In non-Teen Wolf news, this Britta vid is perfect and choked me the fuck up. Whee, VVC premieres, I can't wait to watch more. And ... that's about it, really. Life recently has included a sprained ankle, greater levels of financial competence, hanging out with someone very attractive in a sadly platonic fashion, drawing comics even smaller than usual (somewhere back in Somerville my friend A.W. is self-righteously annoyed and does not know why) and my little brother being home from France after almost a year. So all in all, pretty great. But mostly, werewolves.
reflectedeve: Frank Iero posing with a painting of himself (covering "his" mouth). (c'est ne pas un frank)
Ugh, it's so good to be home. I've been back in the Happy Valley for a couple days, on a brief visit to family (biological and chosen). It's nice to spend some time in a place which, while familiar, contains plenty of new faces. I can go whole hours without encountering someone I've spoken to before, if I'm careful. Also I got to pick up my comics subscriptions from the last few months (Brian K. Vaughn & Fiona Staples's Saga is pretty nifty, by the way ... and new Castle Waiting is the best thing of ALL), and go shopping for such things as used music, sex toys and sun dresses, none of which I can do easily back north. (Although dress shopping, it turns out, just isn't happening. MY BREASTS ARE DRESS PROOF. :( I did find a lovely new tie, though, and I got to try on a gorgeous tail coat.)

After all that shopping yesterday, my friend was telling me about this little company in Maine that makes handcrafted dildos shaped like tentacles and unicorn horns (among other things). I thought some of you might appreciate that? ;)

Anyway, enough rambling about random real life stuff ... while I was off doing un-internet things, the fabulous [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang fic I illustrated for was posted! And I Will Be Your Goal (Frank/Gerard/Grant) is a lovely story about relationships and revolution simultaneously gaining momentum in a vaguely steampunk European setting, written by [personal profile] tuesdaysgone and [personal profile] fleurdeliser! Check it out! You can find my illustrations here or on LJ. I had a blast with the Regency-era costuming in particular!

I also have to put in a quick plug for The Only Hope For Me Is You, the final part of [personal profile] tuesdaysgone's Killjoys trilogy, which I cannot WAIT to read. Those stories have basically been my chosen Killjoys canon thus far, and I'm so thrilled to finally get the conclusion!

I hope you guys are generally having a great weekend! I should go tear myself off the internet before I accidentally spoil myself for the Legend of Korra finale on tumblr.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (Default)
So, um, hey guys? I realized the other day that I have clearly slipped into full-on hibernation mode without even realizing it. It often happens this time of year, even when I'm not in grad school ... I just lose energy for most things that aren't an immediate part of my everyday life. I kind of hate it, but at least it should be turning around soon?

School's pretty awesome right now (I'm working on a much longer, more self-directed project that'll take me up to the end of the year, and I'm very excited about it), and the White Collar finale made me tear up, and life is generally good (apart from a serving of financial stress here, a bit of seasonal glumness there).

Also, I was going to put together a bunch of little pieces of fic illustration from various stories and then post them together, but it looks like I might not manage to finish most of them for awhile, so here's one to share!

This is a scene from [livejournal.com profile] theopteryx's amazing little post-apocalyptic [livejournal.com profile] no_tags fic, Fog, Sheets, and Thunder. I recommend it highly; the worldbuilding is extensive and engaging, and it's full of tiny intimate moments and painful hope and yes. Check it out. I had to try responding to it on paper as well as with words, though I don't feel as though I really did it justice.

yeti!Dewees says happy holidays

Apologies; this is late for the majority of holidays, I believe, except New Years! As is just about everything I've tried to accomplish this year. I have this bad habit of treating most of my vacations as convalescences; my main resolution this year, naturally, is to try to stop overdoing everything. (No really.)

It's been a lovely bit of R&R, although I've barely even scratched the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide surface or spent much time online; too busy tripping and falling into Connie Willis' Blackout/All Clear. (Another problem I have in re overdoing things: reading in moderation does not come naturally!) That said, I'm absurdly excited about the abundant Downton Abbey fic this year, and what I have read (mostly Blue Beetle and Community), I've enjoyed immensely. I may have to do recs; I don't remember the last time I did that!

Anyway, have some brief RL blather about Christmas. )

Also some belated Sherlock Holmes reaction! )

Ack, must cut this short (rather than discussing any Christmas specials I may have watched yesterday - oh, Downton Abbey), but hi, I hope you're all having a lovely winter, holiday season, last few weeks, etc!
