I mean, I think that’s probably the universal queer reaction to King Marchand and his relationship with Victoria, right? Certainly I share it ... ugh. But I read once that in an earlier version of the script, or maybe the play it was based on, had him first kiss Victor(ia) still thinking he was a cis man (before they added the scene where he spies on her in the bath and is all smug about what he sees).
And there’s interesting stuff in the middle, when they’re dating, but going out means gay dance clubs. Of course, he’s profoundly uncomfortable and has to go ~prove his heteromasculinity by starting a random bar fight (ugh again), but there’s potential for the story and character to go to interesting places. I’m here for the queering of King Marchand (especially as opposed to the heterocisnormative recuperation of Victoria).
So that’s what the fic above does: queers up King’s desire, and Victor(ia)’s desire for him, as well as her/his own identity. I love it ... and since I can’t actually remove the ending of the movie when I watch it, I will from now on pretend all that is going on behind the scenes, as it were. ;) For starters.
