Jeez, you guys. I just came out of a two-hour lecture/panel discussion (the third in two days) that basically turned into a debate about print and digital media and tools for artists, audience interaction, the internet, and so on. I feel exhausted and exhilarated. I can't decide if I want to have a thousand meta discussions about creator/audience interaction, fandom, crowdsourcing, the Veronica Mars kickstarter, Homestuck (which I should mention, I still haven't read) ... or just go lock myself in a room and draw until my fingers ache. I kind of have to do the latter (after a five-hour office shift), but you know.

Speaking of internet audiences and such, could I ask your opinion on something web/comics related? )

Anyway, apart from the meta thoughts I haven't had time for much of fannish anything, although I have been following Gerard's twitter posts religiously. (Nice popcorn tree, dude. God, how are you so charming?) And I still haven't watched The Phoenix video, but I'm finally listening to it. Repeatedly. (Young Volcanoes is great too! But um. Unf.)

I am dithering about buying a ticket to see Fall Out Boy in Lowell or Brooklyn this fall ... I'm broke and I don't know what I'll be doing then. Are people going? Ever since MJ I've been missing being around fans so intensely.

OH MY GOD WHAT IS EVEN HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.

Sorry guys, sorry. I just, I have been having such a fail day today. A fail weekend, really, when I really fell off my schedule and felt more stressed and less in control of myself than I have in weeks. And I just got off the phone after a really frustrating conversation with a totally clueless state health care customer service rep (because apparently she can't see why my therapist is getting denied payment and I'm not allowed to call provider services; she can't even give me the number to give my therapist) and ... everyone on twitter is losing their shit because FALL OUT BOY IS BACK.

So apparently I'm a little hysterical, and I apologize. Just. This song is fantastic, it's everything I've always loved best about this band, and there's a new album and a new tour and Pete, how did you know I needed this? The first years working in the adjacent classroom had better not get sick of this song because it's gonna be on loop for awhile.

So some of you are gonna go to the Boston show with me, right? *_____*

So a few weeks ago, when [personal profile] jjtaylor posted Nothing To Confess, I knew I was going to have to do some more art. The story was everything I wanted when I imagined a BLI!Patrick; seriously creepy and hot.

Patrick reties his tie
So uh, what I'm trying to say with this is basically ... unf. Maybe it's good to be getting this version out of my system before I go see the real Patrick in a few weeks.

One more in color. )

Apart from that, this week I've been re-watching the second season of Angel (Gunn and Wesley are precious; I'd almost forgotten) and finishing up the first season of Castle, which I kind of adore. The dynamic between Beckett and Castle is kind of fabulous, particularly because I think it manages to do justice to both characters, rather than having either of them show the other up too consistently. Also, I would seem to be a sucker for father/daughter dynamics lately. Netflix can't send me the second season fast enough.

Oh hey, and if you liked the art above? Just a reminder that I'm up for auction at [livejournal.com profile] help_japan. :D I'll illustrate your fic (or just draw you something), or even make you a comic! All as a bonus for sending some aid and comfort where it's desperately needed.

Back from the funeral and feeling wiped out, but okay. Some wonderful family friends really ameliorated the worst of the experience for me (particularly their four-year-old daughter, who has decided not to be nervous of me anymore and spent half the wake asking me a lot of very earnest questions). I'm so glad it's March tomorrow; I'm really ready to start the climb out of this winter.

(I'm also starting to get really excited about school! All my dad's random cousins were asking me a lot of questions about it, and I should be getting my further information in about a month, so I can finally start some more in-depth planning. Also, I'll probably need to officially inform my job in a month or so.)

Anyway, right before I left, I finally finished a piece of fanart I've been working on for awhile. I had the idea when I first saw some of Patrick Stump's publicity photos from late last year, and it wouldn't leave me alone. Something about the sharp clothing and oddly distant expression. (You may remember this preview doodle of Patrick with ray guns.) Full image behind the cut:

Stay helpless. )

In a thrilling reversal, [personal profile] jjtaylor has written a story in this universe: Nothing To Confess. I am so fucking excited to read it, I can't even tell you. :DDD

I've been in bandom for almost three years now, but I'm still occasionally taken by surprise when that whole 'overinvestment in celebrities' lives' thing rears its head. And yet here I am, reeling sadly over Pete/Ashlee divorce proceedings. Real life, IDEK. :(

It's a little odd that I was already working on a bunch of FOB-related art for the first time in ages. I have a larger Killjoys!AU piece to finish at some point, but in the meantime, [personal profile] jjtaylor requested some Patrick art, and this happened:

Patrick Stump, agent of S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W

I couldn't resist the reference to his opening comments on "Love Selfish Love," though I'm not sure this is even quite in character for the whole BL/ind concept I was going for. Also? My first attempt at drawing him (in an approximation of his current look) wound up looking an awful lot like David Bowie (whose likeness I have struggled with, off and on, for years). I'm sure he'd be pleased.

In other fandom news, I received my [community profile] white_lotus gift yesterday; it's another amazing vid, full of gorgeous swoopy motion shots and heart-catching character moments. CAST OF MY HEART, basically. ♥ I appreciate my mystery vidder very much.

I've been back to not having time for much fic, the last week or two (although I've torn through three volumes of The Invisibles on the bus; I'm liking it more and more as I go on); however, after last night's White Collar, I find myself really craving some OT3 kinkfic. I don't suppose anyone has any recs? ;)

I meant to do a post-FOB exploration this weekend, but I mostly wound up getting stuck on Patrick. I've lost track of how many times I've listened to the Rolling Stones acoustic performance of "Love Selfish Love" since Friday night, and I want that album now. ("Hereby hangs a tale," much?) Need to give the Black Cards more than just a first listen, but I'm intrigued. (Oh Pete, what IS that outfit? I love that first shot, with Bebe looking completely gorgeous in the front, and then ... bear wolf.)

The other thing I couldn't stop watching all weekend was this Avatar vid to Vienna Teng's "Watershed," because JFC is it gorgeous and powerful.

Things have been looking up in general. In spite of the dangerously icy condition of all the sidewalks in the city, I've really been enjoying this whole forty-degrees-and-sunny thing we have going. (It's an evil NE trick, I know that, but I might as well get what I can out of it.) I even ventured out of my cave apartment to attend a clothing swap on Saturday, which also involved some comics talk and a competitive game of Uno, because I know good sorts of people. :) Also I drew some things; there might be a locked announcement about minicomics and etsy in the next couple of weeks, if people don't mind a little plugging.

Speaking of things I've drawn: I am not entirely pleased with this one, but I like the concept enough that I've changed my mind about not posting it. I have too many ideas right now to try redrawing. /o\ Also, contains GRANT. )

People making comics, as subject matter, is apparently irresistible.

Messy morning, but no snow day for me. Which I realize is just as well, or I'd only wind up working late trying to catch up later this week, but all the same.

Had quite a productive weekend, really; tried a new soup recipe (made of leaves and much tastier than expected - by which I mean, very), posted new fanart, got quite a significant chunk of minicomic work done, took in a play, and gave up on avoiding Grant Morrison fic. (Lines? What lines?) Had about fifteen other things I wanted to work on, but that's always the way.

I've been listening to Fall Out Boy an awful lot again lately, also. (I didn't even realize how much I missed them.) I've honestly been avoiding most news about related people since the breakup, with the result that I haven't heard any of the music various folks have been putting out. Should I?

[ETA:] I almost forgot! [livejournal.com profile] trekreversebang is open for sign-ups! Sign up to draw something, or write something based on a drawing! And even if you don't want to do that anyone can submit awesome prompts.

I have been a fanart machine lately, relatively speaking. :D: Here's my contribution to Sweet Charity; a one-page comic drawn for [personal profile] wistfuljane. She requested a Pete/Patrick Alice In Wonderland AU, with Pete as the Mad Hatter and Patrick as the White Rabbit. I threw in Gabe as the March Hare and Ryan as the Dormouse, to round out the cast. :) (Sadly could not figure out a way to work in Joe as the Caterpillar.)

This is safe for work. Warning: mildly anthropomorphic animal-people. *g* I guess it was only a matter of time, in this fandom.

We're all mad here. )

So thank you so much, [personal profile] wistfuljane, for bidding on me; and more importantly, for donating to charity. ♥ I am thrilled that I had the opportunity to participate in such a fantastic event. &fandom;

My brother's coming to stay with me this weekend! :D I have to spend my whole day off tomorrow cleaning the apartment. /o\

Bleurgh, work is kicking my ass today. I am looking forward to mid-February, which is really pretty unusual.

On the other hand, Fall Out Boy touring with Cobra! :D Tuesday concerts in Lowell are not exactly the most convenient things, but I really can't see how I can miss this. (Last time they played there? I trekked around in the rain with [livejournal.com profile] sweetvalleyslut to pick up the ticket she got off [livejournal.com profile] 2damnoldforthis, and then that night she called from the commuter rail station asking for taxi numbers and google map directions. I thought she was nuts. :D)

Hey, so, I'm home. My laptop's still squirreled away in a drawer at the office, but one of my roomies was nice enough to lend me his.

The trip was pretty fabulous, and I'll have photos and stories later if everyone wants. I have to catch up on holiday exchange comments (and responses), various posted things, ninety kajillion [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic, etc . . . and work is likely to descend into madness almost immediately (I'm back tomorrow). So I should probably go to bed, but first!

Holiday exchanges were lovely this year, though I was sad to be away for much of the posting & anonymity. Now that the reveals are all done, however, I figured I'd share.

For [livejournal.com profile] go_exchange, the holidays with Newt and Anathema. )

For [livejournal.com profile] yuletart, Pete goes down on his knees for Patrick. )

For [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, I wrote a little story based on the comic series Hopeless Savages, which is far and away the most obscure fandom I've tried yet. any taste that you feel is right describes a day in which young Twitch Strummer Hopeless-Savage feels a little off-balance, but the usual familial antics help to put things right. I'm a little shaky on this one, it feels like . . . it could have been longer? Or possibly just worked better as a comic. Prose is kind of awkward and difficult for me these days. Need to work on that.

I also received some lovely gifts. :) From [livejournal.com profile] mandyvonblandy, a cute little Good Omens comic in which Crowley's Christmas card upsets Aziraphale's sense of propriety. From [livejournal.com profile] derawr, a classic (flying) moonlight kiss, starring Karolina & Nico from Runaways. And from [livejournal.com profile] hikaru, Nothing Is Innocent Now, a sensual coda to Sarah Waters' Fingersmith. Much appreciated. ♥

I've been trying not to crash for hours, but I really should go do that already. I hope you guys enjoy the art. Happy New Year, I missed you all!
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (pretty villainy - out of costume)
Whee. I finished my [livejournal.com profile] yuletart (and I'm pretty happy with it, too - can't wait to show you guys), so . . . now it's on to [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. And some kind of holiday card for everyone, even if it's only digital.

In spite of all the stress and endless to-do lists, I really do love this time of year. Even just on a visual level, to put it simply: I love sparkly things. Walking home nights surrounded by holiday light displays puts an extra spring in my step, and makes me want to sit up and draw all night long (which is probably why I'm so tired today). Now, if only it would snow.

Speaking of sparkly things, I took a break from all the cooking and drawing I did this weekend to go see this movie with [livejournal.com profile] hermionesviolin. (Thanks for the heads' up, [livejournal.com profile] phineasjones! ♥ I hope you get a chance too.) Fandom really ought to have a look at this: it's a gay fantasy musical . . . oh yeah, and it's full of Shakespeare. It's silly as all hell, but there is glitter and boykissing and pretty (if often lulzy) choreography, and of course, plenty of quoting and paraphrasing (and singing) the Bard. Might have to try and track it down on DVD.

Meanwhile, I don't think I dislike a single song on this album. There are a few where I think "ehhh, that's not so great," and then there's some particular line or musical passage that fills me with joy. Can't pick a favorite yet, either (though this song's definitely up there). I love all Fall Out Boys (and the guests aren't bad either).

Speaking also of warm fuzzies, here's my thread in the holiday anon love meme. I've never done one before, but you know, might as well try it. :)
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (boypile - snuggles - just too precious)
Yeah, so I'm up to my neck in inking and I have a second Thanksgiving dinner to finish food for, but . . . THIS ALBUM. I don't have a favorite song yet, I'm still processing (fifth listen in, I think? I don't know when I'm gonna be able to turn it off), but holy hot DAMN. I love this band's various albums for their own various quirks, but this one might be my favorite. Oh god, Patrick, your VOICE. (I still want bluesy duets with Greta someday. Please?)

[ETA:] Snark at Dubya in 20 Dollar Nose Bleed? LOL latest, Pete, but. ♥

[ETA2:] I still can't read Staring Through The Demons, and now everybody and her sainted aunt is doing fanart for it! (This is all so much to look forward to for after I finish my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. And motivation to get it done early. Yes. :((((((()
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (canon otp (otp otp) - dramatic romance)
All my energy has been going towards work and family the last couple of weeks; bouncing back and forth across the state every weekend is kind of exhausting, and so are new students. I have this ridiculous tab backlog right now . . . unread fic, uncommented-on fanart, your odd political article (I am inevitably reminded that I hate caring about politics, but that's another story). Also I've been giving a lot of thought to taking an academic class this semester, and traveling to Europe next year.

I had to pop my head in, though, because I love my fandom SO DAMN MUCH. (It bears repeating occasionally!) For one thing, I don't even know how to deal with Gerard's hair, but I find I'm already kind of loving it (wouldn't be the first time I adored someone with a red mullet, after all *g*). Also? It's his and Lyn-Z's first wedding anniversary today! ♥ And they are still giddy and ridiculous and adorable. (I need to check around and see if anyone has a concert report for MSI at Dragon*Con.)

Also, half of Panic celebrated their birthdays this week, complete with hotass girlfriends and thematically appropriate cake. I may have cooed a little. Dammit. ;)

And then there's Patrick Stump telling me to put a heatwave in my pants. Oh holy fuck. (It is not surprising that I fucking adore "I Don't Care." I have a particular love for the sort of stompy/rockin' FOB songs--that's clearly a technical term--after all, "Bang The Doldrums" was the first one I ever loved. And not just for the tinhattery!) I want the rest of that album so badly.

Next week I get an [livejournal.com profile] olivia_circe--in fact, I get all of [livejournal.com profile] intensityboat!!--and a screamy mustachioed Frank. \o/

Finally got the mixtape to work! :D I know a lot of people have been having various problems with it, so I've re-zipped it and am uploading it for anyone who is still having trouble. [ETA:] mixtape part 1, mixtape part 2!

Between this and my ridiculous love for Gerard Way, this week is off to a fantastic start. Which is good, because I'm going to need the momentum (it's orientation, and work is crawling with new students, they are EVERYWHERE).

&Decaydance;

&My Chemical Romance;

(Oh Patrick, your voice! ♥)

I am very excited about all of this (new album new album eeee), but it would be nice if I could listen to that mix tape. :( I'm not having any problems downloading it, but many of the files just refuse to open, and I can't extract them, either. I know some people are having similar issues: any solutions, guys?
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (summer of like - pictured together - shi)
Braaaaains.

Well, last night was quite a roller coaster ride. (Colliding viral marketing campaigns? Or working in conjunction? Ow.) I got no sleep, and during the little bit that I did? I dreamed that FBR was mysteriously texting fans about something (which I don't remember), so everyone kept flipping out in my head, even after I got myself away from the computer. (It was also kind of creepy because it was unclear how they acquired our phone numbers.) This fandom makes me kind of hysterical.

I did finish inking and sent my latest bit of crack off to my (awesome) beta (which is why I was up late enough to catch all that in the first place). That took so much longer than it had any right to.

More caffeine, and to braaaains work.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (om nom nom - the classiest)
Ahaha, viral marketing is kind of awesome. I'm usually pretty laid-back about FOB/Wentz love, but I'm bubbling over with excitement right now. (You know how to get me, Pete. Apparently!) ♥ ♥ ♥

Work's suddenly getting pretty crazy (how is it almost fall?), and things keep sneaking up on me. For instance, the Hushies & Cab show in Hartford this weekend! \o/ I can deal with the end of the summer, I guess, since I get to end it with Greta. I believe a whole bunch of you are going, so maybe I'll see you there? :)

Spent last night marathoning Sports Night and inking stuff, with a bit of porn discussion on the side. Absolutely the best kind of evening.
