Whoops, Chocolate Box reveals are here already! I have so many comments to leave, which I intend to do today. But first, I'm excited to share my all-X-Men slate of contributions. I've been feeling such a fannish resurgence for the last few months, so I ... pretty much could not resist.

Mutant gal pals, and more! )

Also, the [community profile] rarefemslashexchange archive is open now, and worth a look! I do believe I'm going to enjoy wrapping up my much-needed three-day weekend with a lot of fannish appreciation.

Taking a breather mid-work-day after a somewhat nerve-wracking meeting with my boss, so, hello out there. I hope you lot are doing all right.

In the world of Lilith Does Too Many Exchanges, a lull of sorts approaches; the [community profile] chocolateboxcomm archive is live, and the [community profile] rarefemslashexchange archive will be soon (hopefully tomorrow). I'm not doing anything but [community profile] once_upon_fic, which has a pleasantly long creation period, until May at least. Whew. I'm hoping to come out of the winter blues with a more balanced professional life (as I keep getting the hang of this position) and fresh energy to put towards my original projects. Fingers crossed.

Oh, but speaking of Chocolate Box! My gifts are amazing and deserve all the eyes on them.

In The Script of the Future, X-Men Comics, Mystique/Destiny, 721 words, G
A sweet look at the earliest days of their relationship, through Raven's eyes, which includes one of the best and most intimate, lovely uses of her powers as an accessible adaptation and it's so romantic and I just can't. I love them so much.

Gravitating towards you, Sailor Moon, Hotaru/ChibiUsa, G
A beautiful portrait of this pairing; in the creator's own words, a "royal portrait, sort of. Because they can't stop looking at each other instead of the painter." Delicate, graceful lines and gesture, a deeply intimate mood, and an excellent use of a limited palette. Could be appreciated with no canon knowledge whatsoever, I suspect.

In other news, I stumbled across an old fannish friend out of the blue on tumblr this weekend, someone I hadn't spoken to in 10+ years, and I've been feeling a little giddy about it off and on. I mean, on the one hand, help, I'm old. On the other, she's still writing (and tormenting a fascinated audience with her cruel chapter cliffhangers and intense emotional scenes) and it's just so lovely to rediscover a lost connection. It makes me feel more hopeful about the world, or life, or something.

Onwards and upwards and all that jazz!
reflectedeve: Selina Kyle: "GEEZ, Holly, relax ... next you'll be arguing about whether SPANDEX is really functional or not." (spandex - comics are on crack)
I'm so delighted that you could stop by! I love this exchange to bits. I hope it's a fun time for you, too. <3

I'm keeping some lists of general likes over here, and more fandom/character specifics below the cut. Please feel free to use them as much or as little as you like! I get ... enthusiastic, but this is supposed to be a low-pressure exchange, so please take that to heart and follow your bliss; I'm going to love finding out where that takes you. (I appreciate you avoiding my DNWs in the process, of course!)

A plethora of prompts! )

[community profile] chocolateboxcomm creator reveals were more than a week ago, but my pandemic brain fog/disjointed awareness of the passage of time has been a lot, lately. I had a ton of fun drawing for the exchange as usual!

My contributions! )

My GIFTS, though. [archiveofourown.org profile] likeadeuce wrote me The Only Hell Ma Guthrie Ever Raised, a deeply delightful piece of classic New Mutants comics gen that was exactly the kind of balm I needed. The best kids! Shenanigans! Magneto and Emma Frost being, respectively, stern and snarky! And then there was this intriguingly tropey piece of Locked Tomb smut, Fingerbones, by [archiveofourown.org profile] DachOsmin. D/s-inflected necro/cav ritual sex set at the very start of Gideon the Ninth, my gosh.

Cabin fever shows some signs of breaking, as the weather has been warming up (I got to go back to commuting to work by bike last week, which was such a relief). At least, to a point. Semi-quarantine continues to be painful and lonely, and there was an awful scare in my family (non-COVID-related) last week that has me even more shaken right now, which I didn't even really realize was still possible. So I've buried myself in a reread of the Murderbot Diaries over the last few days. I'm excited to write my first fairy tale retelling in years for [community profile] once_upon_fic (and my goodness, aren't I grateful for the generous writing period, in this time of deeply unpredictable creative energy/exhaustion). And the BFF has convinced me to try and take up Tumblr again, luring me with talk of upcoming The Expanse fic. I hadn't been back over there in three years, so it's a bit surreal.

Speaking of both Murderbot and tumblr, I'll leave you with this truly stunning Murderbot animatic/fanvid which gave me ALL THE FEELINGS, good lord. Made by a 20-year-old, I have wasted my life.

Happy 2021! Thank goodness. And I'm thrilled to be ringing in the new year with one of my favorite exchanges!

Thank you so much for creating for me. Chocolate Box is supposed to be a low-pressure exchange, so I hope you'll find this a fun exercise and not stress about it. As usual, while I am going to provide at least a couple of possible prompts for each request, they are strictly optional. Barring my DNWs, I'd be delighted to see anything you come up with in these fandoms!

Life has been a LOT lately (impressively understaffed at work, my metamour just had major abdominal surgery, my second niece was born a couple weeks ago), so I completely missed posting about [community profile] chocolateboxcomm reveals!

First of all, I got two lovely gifts - fic and art, the best possible outcome! :D

[archiveofourown.org profile] borrowedphrases wrote me a lovely little OT3 hurt/comfort coda to Leverage S5E9, "The Rundown Job:" Nearly a Near-Death Experience (Hardison/Parker/Eliot, T)

And I received this gorgeous Labyrinth fanart from [archiveofourown.org profile] Syksy, Ascension of the Goblin Queen, featuring an appropriately 80s-glam Queen Sarah and a kneeling Jareth (unf).

Also, I drew five things - a new personal best! I am definitely going to have to make a point of more art treating for future exchanges where possible, because this was really satisfying.

Art for: Runaways, Excalibur, Gideon the Ninth, She-Ra and Wayfarers! )

I must admit, I really love that Wayfarers is my top fandom on the AO3 now (with three whole fanworks). Gosh, that was fun.

And now, back to my job+, sigh.
reflectedeve: Ruby, in umpire gear, smiles up at Sapphire who is leaning on a baseball bat (unfused - flirting - space queers)
(Aw, GeeWay, I missed your voice!) I very much enjoyed The Umbrella Academy adaptation on Netflix, I have to say. I mean, it certainly has some problems (pls stop fridging women, especially WOC, ugh), but having reread the comics last week, I really appreciated the additional depth the show gives pretty much every character. It sacrificed some of its delightful weirdness in the process (I missed the televator and the evil Eiffel Tower, although the latter at least got a mention), but I think it was, on the whole, a fair exchange. Especially for the developed relationship between Allison and Vanya, because I'm predictable.

[community profile] chocolateboxcomm reveals are up today! I drew two things!

it's all been done (Good Omens, Crowley/Aziraphale, G) is an exploration of Crowley and Aziraphale's relationship (more gen than not, tbh) through the ages, something I've wanted to take a crack at forever. And titled after the BNL song, of course. (God, I hope someone vids the new Amazon miniseries to that song.) It was really marvelous to revisit the characters after such a long time, too! I'm rather pleased with how my Aziraphale design has developed.

binding spell (BtVS, Willow/Tara, G) is a surprisingly SFW shibari-themed illustration of Willow and Tara performing a steamy/romantic spell together, because of course. Aw, nostalgia. <3

I have utterly failed to read any of the fic yet, which is ridiculous, although to be fair I've been quite busy. Taxes, family drama, work drama, blah. But my person will finally, finally be back from Europe tomorrow night, so really, nothing can keep me down for long. And then when they head off for another month after only a week's stay, I'll have the archive waiting to comfort me.
reflectedeve: a concerned Gerard Way (drawn by me) wonders 'now where did I put that holy water?' (holy water - gerard way - why comics)
I've generally felt that I'm pretty lucky among trans and nonbinary folks, in that I haven't needed or wanted to change my (real) name, or at least not the version of it I already use with everyone I care about, and have for my entire life. It's relatively neutral, and I like it. Maybe people would have an easier time adjusting to new pronouns if they came with a new name, but ah well.

But my fandom names, the ones that have stuck for a good 15 years now, are Lilith and reflectedeve (occasionally Eve), and it's only striking me in the last year or so how confusing that is. Two very specific and powerful cultural symbols of womanhood! Good job, college me. But really, when I think about it, those choices largely came from an attraction to the idea of challenging norms and institutions, specifically around literature/religion (my academic subjects of choice), gender, and sexuality. So honestly, they still feel right, especially Lilith? (And also there's, you know, continuity and that. I've been Lilith since the very first year of Yuletide, jeez.) Ah well.

In other news, I am very upset that just as I've made a decision to back off fannish commitments again for a bit, I find out about this very intriguing xeno exchange for which nominations open tomorrow: [personal profile] close_encounters. It's so ME. :( Just look at that tentacle icon! Maybe I can grab a pinch-hit or make a treat ... anyway, if you're less overcommitted, check it out!

Also, and most excitingly, the [community profile] chocolateboxcomm archive opened today! I have barely been able to look yet, BUT. I got two fabulous fanart gifts and I am so thoroughly pleased! <3

A Lesson In The Folly Library (Rivers of London, gen; Abigail, Varvara Sidorovna, Toby)
I have been wanting more fanart for these books so badly and this is a gorgeous mid-story sort of image with lovely background details and characterization. Fabulous and inspiring. Makes me want to go out and draw some in this fandom immediately, myself.

Austria, 1912 (X-Men, Mystique/Destiny)
SUPER cute shippy pin-up image of the two of them in the early days of their relationship, complete with lovingly-rendered period-appropriate outfits! Eeee so adorable!

Have I mentioned how happy I am that multi-media fan exchanges are becoming more common, even if they are still overwhelmingly fic-based? (I mean, I love fic, obviously. But I love ALL THE THINGS.) I am totally going to have to work on those guidelines/suggestions for prompting for fanart. At some point. Soon.
reflectedeve: Frank Iero posing with a painting of himself (covering "his" mouth). (c'est ne pas un frank)
I get my partner back two weeks from today (they've been in Europe since mid-December, so I haven't seen them since I came home from my holiday trip on New Years Eve - I haven't seen them yet this year, wah). I can make it. (I'd better be able to, this is going to keep being a thing. Dating professors with international research interests ... sigh.)

In other personal news, I'm (finally) doing an in-lab sleep study tomorrow night! I'm a little too excited about this, and will probably annoy the techs with all my questions about brainwaves and the like. (I really hope they let me look at mine. My sleep spindles, show me themmmm. And take pictures of the machinery, etc.) But really, I swear, I'm almost crossing my fingers for a sleep apnea diagnosis at this point. Is that weird? It's just that there's a pretty tried, true, and celebrated fix for that (even if the mask looks rather silly). The whole idea of actually feeling well-rested is taking on mythic qualities in my mind. I'm so tired of being tired.

But enough about me - [community profile] chocolateboxcomm has pinch-hits up, and you should check them out! Write someone a super-short fic or draw them a little something! The archive opens next week, and I'm super excited.

Also, I'm thinking about writing up a post of suggested guidelines for prompting fanartists, aimed at challenges and exchanges like that one (which incorporate fic-and-or-art request options). I've noticed that when people request both, they often provide prompts that are mostly plot ideas without a lot of visual application. Which isn't the end of the world by any means--and I'm so glad fanart is being included in more exchanges--but I have a feeling it could come in handy for some people. Maybe? (Thoughts?)

So, you're clearly awesome. Thank you for signing up to draw or write for me! In the spirit of this exchange, I'll try and keep this letter short and sweet (uh, for me, anyway). :)
