Well, I continue to more or less live in outer space (I’d feel guiltier about this, but it’s kind of a survival thing right now; finances and mental health are both pretty disastrous, although I’m doing my best to change that, slowly).

After an ... extended period of rewatching, note-taking and analysis, the outline for my Garak/Bashir fic project(!) is coming together, although I’m weirdly having a much easier time with the emotional arc than the plot. (This is seriously unusual for me! At least, in my original work, where concept/plot/worldbuilding are always the easier part, so far.) I’m getting closer, though ... and deeply excited to just immerse myself in writing these characters.

(Mainly, I’m struggling to invent the specifics of a convoluted, covert plot worthy of Elim Garak. I mean, that’s kind of next level, you know? Argh.)

preview image showing Garak’s face in profile, and ... part of a bound, contorted figure

Also, I semi-accidentally took a NSFW fanart commission based on the suspension scene from The Policy of Truth a scorching hot BDSM-centric fic by [archiveofourown.org profile] Prevailing (WiP, but worth it, and I’m fairly certain she will finish it eventually). Which was also a bit of a departure on a number of levels.

Here’s the (NSFW!) full image. )

I kind of have a lizard problem. But at least I’m enjoying myself?

This show.

So I haven't had five minutes to think about doing fanart (much to my chagrin, as I'd dearly love to do something with some Fall Out Boys, among many other subjects). However! Over break I volunteered to do some fanart for a bit of Becky Cloonan/Lindsey Ballato fic [personal profile] tuesdaysgone and [personal profile] fleurdeliser were brainstorming about. (You might remember some preliminary sketches from December!)

One little illustration here! )

You must read Anticipating Your Next Move; it's ADORABLE and delightfully nerdy. :D Also, hot.

Ugh, it's so good to be home. I've been back in the Happy Valley for a couple days, on a brief visit to family (biological and chosen). It's nice to spend some time in a place which, while familiar, contains plenty of new faces. I can go whole hours without encountering someone I've spoken to before, if I'm careful. Also I got to pick up my comics subscriptions from the last few months (Brian K. Vaughn & Fiona Staples's Saga is pretty nifty, by the way ... and new Castle Waiting is the best thing of ALL), and go shopping for such things as used music, sex toys and sun dresses, none of which I can do easily back north. (Although dress shopping, it turns out, just isn't happening. MY BREASTS ARE DRESS PROOF. :( I did find a lovely new tie, though, and I got to try on a gorgeous tail coat.)

After all that shopping yesterday, my friend was telling me about this little company in Maine that makes handcrafted dildos shaped like tentacles and unicorn horns (among other things). I thought some of you might appreciate that? ;)

Anyway, enough rambling about random real life stuff ... while I was off doing un-internet things, the fabulous [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang fic I illustrated for was posted! And I Will Be Your Goal (Frank/Gerard/Grant) is a lovely story about relationships and revolution simultaneously gaining momentum in a vaguely steampunk European setting, written by [personal profile] tuesdaysgone and [personal profile] fleurdeliser! Check it out! You can find my illustrations here or on LJ. I had a blast with the Regency-era costuming in particular!

I also have to put in a quick plug for The Only Hope For Me Is You, the final part of [personal profile] tuesdaysgone's Killjoys trilogy, which I cannot WAIT to read. Those stories have basically been my chosen Killjoys canon thus far, and I'm so thrilled to finally get the conclusion!

I hope you guys are generally having a great weekend! I should go tear myself off the internet before I accidentally spoil myself for the Legend of Korra finale on tumblr.

So, um, hey guys? I realized the other day that I have clearly slipped into full-on hibernation mode without even realizing it. It often happens this time of year, even when I'm not in grad school ... I just lose energy for most things that aren't an immediate part of my everyday life. I kind of hate it, but at least it should be turning around soon?

School's pretty awesome right now (I'm working on a much longer, more self-directed project that'll take me up to the end of the year, and I'm very excited about it), and the White Collar finale made me tear up, and life is generally good (apart from a serving of financial stress here, a bit of seasonal glumness there).

Also, I was going to put together a bunch of little pieces of fic illustration from various stories and then post them together, but it looks like I might not manage to finish most of them for awhile, so here's one to share!

This is a scene from [livejournal.com profile] theopteryx's amazing little post-apocalyptic [livejournal.com profile] no_tags fic, Fog, Sheets, and Thunder. I recommend it highly; the worldbuilding is extensive and engaging, and it's full of tiny intimate moments and painful hope and yes. Check it out. I had to try responding to it on paper as well as with words, though I don't feel as though I really did it justice.

So last night's MCR show was ... fucking amazing, one of the best concert experiences I have ever had. I may actually try and write up some kind of concert report later, but I need to go put myself back together a bit more first, and figure out if I expect to actually accomplish anything today. (If I put off going to the RMV until tomorrow, I am probably going to regret it, huh?)

However, I can't resist post thing the two quick pieces of art I finished to give people at the show ...

Here's an entirely goofy Killjoys/[livejournal.com profile] thegaystarfish fusion-y thing:
Korse stalks Frank & Gerard at Carnival

Also, for [personal profile] tuesdaysgone, a little illustration from her amazing Killjoys prequel, The Kids From Yesterday: At the first lick of guitars, he started grinning. )

All right, now food.

a daisy with an eye in the middle of the blossom

It's a glorious, crisp spring day out; I think I'm going to take my sketchbook down to the harbor for most of the day. It's the first weekend in ages that I haven't had to be off on a bus to somewhere else! Not that those weren't lovely trips, but I'm kind of pleased that this week, I get to sit back and let the fangirls (and my band) come to me.

I've been a little stuck with fanart lately, which is no good when I have charity commissions to be working on! But a few weeks back I pulled out all the thumbnails I did for [personal profile] jjtaylor's The Detective's Secret and the Mystery of the Dancing Flowers back in December and started noodling around. It was nice to have something already planned out to jumpstart myself with! I've been meaning to post a new scene from that story every now and then, so here's another.

This piece was a collaborative effort! The windows in the background were designed by the very talented [personal profile] ataratah, who also makes a fantastic art beta. Thanks, bb. ♥

Okay, time to get off my ass very soon now; I need to make the most of living so close to the water before I go moving to a landlocked state for two years.

So a few weeks ago, when [personal profile] jjtaylor posted Nothing To Confess, I knew I was going to have to do some more art. The story was everything I wanted when I imagined a BLI!Patrick; seriously creepy and hot.

Patrick reties his tie
So uh, what I'm trying to say with this is basically ... unf. Maybe it's good to be getting this version out of my system before I go see the real Patrick in a few weeks.

One more in color. )

Apart from that, this week I've been re-watching the second season of Angel (Gunn and Wesley are precious; I'd almost forgotten) and finishing up the first season of Castle, which I kind of adore. The dynamic between Beckett and Castle is kind of fabulous, particularly because I think it manages to do justice to both characters, rather than having either of them show the other up too consistently. Also, I would seem to be a sucker for father/daughter dynamics lately. Netflix can't send me the second season fast enough.

Oh hey, and if you liked the art above? Just a reminder that I'm up for auction at [livejournal.com profile] help_japan. :D I'll illustrate your fic (or just draw you something), or even make you a comic! All as a bonus for sending some aid and comfort where it's desperately needed.

Thank fucking goodness it’s a three-day weekend. I may, at times, have wondered if I was blowing this time of year out of proportion a bit, but really, not so much. Once again, I’m grateful that the windows on my floor don’t open – defenestration of particularly uncooperative faculty members does get a bit tempting now and then. (Seven more months ... and only three more weeks of Admissions season. I'll just keep daydreaming about dyeing my hair outrageous colors the second I can do that again, and maybe other things too.)

It’s just as well that bandom has eaten my brain again, really; it’s a pretty great distraction. A few days ago, I randomly dreamed that Greta Salpeter asked me out on a date and we cuddled in the middle of a big, sunny field (there was some sort of festival setting up nearby). My subconscious isn’t usually so fluffy, but it was nice. Of course, it’s probably only a matter of time before all the Grant Morrison-related ephemera I’ve been consuming catches up to me. (I watched the Disinfo speech a few days ago. I don’t even know, nor am I sure I want to. I do want to finally get back to reading The Invisibles, though.)

Seriously, how did this even happen? Fandom in comics and comics in fandom … I’ve watched the Talking With Gods documentary twice in the last week, so I suppose fanart is only a matter of time, really. Particularly since I seem to have made illustrating [personal profile] jjtaylor my fannish occupation of late.

Speaking of which! It was her birthday yesterday, a fact which helped me decide which scene from “The Detective’s Secret” I’d play with next. (I have a longish list.) Hope you like it, bb; happy belated! ♥

Not going into the pool. )

It occurred to me recently that I miss using this space for conversation, rather than just as a slightly talky gallery. I’ve seriously gotten out of the habit of commenting and communicating on DW/LJ, and I’m finding getting back into it something of a challenge. Definitely want to do better on that.

In a slightly more interactive vein (and to prove that I do in fact have other fandoms still): there’s an interest-gauging poll going on for [livejournal.com profile] trekreversebang right now! That’s the reverse Star Trek bigbang where ficcers sign up to write stories based on fanart; an awesome idea that I’d love to see spread around a bit more. You guys should check it out.

Before I go work on my actual minicomic for awhile, one more thing I have to share: the spectacle of Pete Wentz interviewing himself. I still love his stupid face.
reflectedeve: Frank Iero posing with a painting of himself (covering "his" mouth). (c'est ne pas un frank)
So I've mentioned a few times that I really want to get back into doing more fanart this year (at least until school starts in the fall, meep). I sort of thought I'd be starting off with some brightly-colored Killjoys shenanigans, but well. :)

This is my first illustration for [personal profile] jjtaylor's The Detective's Secret and the Mystery of the Dancing Flowers. If you haven't read the story yet, you probably shouldn't look, as it spoils one of the more climactic scenes. And seriously, read the story. It's amazing.

I'm on fire, aren't I? )
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (slash - fanart - self-indulgence)
Oh um, hi internet! /o\ I am kind of swamped these days. I've taken on a number of original comics projects for the summer (not to mention my grad school application). So it looks like I'm just going to have even less time for fandom stuff than usual. (Although, I say this five days before Leverage comes back, so IDK. Grain of salt.)

That said, the fabulous [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang story I drew for has gone live! Only Going One Way, by [personal profile] ataratah and [personal profile] jjtaylor, is a BANDOM/DUE SOUTH CROSSOVER. Yeah. :DDD It is fucking hilarious and cracked-out and amazing, and you should totally go check it out! Not only is the main pairing adorable, but these two have a real gift for writing great secondary characters as well - in both fandoms. (Buck Frobisher, omg. :DDD)

You can see my four illustrations on LJ or on DW. How could I possibly pass up the chance to draw Gerard Way in a Mountie uniform? I had so much fun with this, seriously. It was particularly appropriate, since I started working on it during the drive to/from Canada for my brother's graduation.

Of course, now I've done fanart of Fraser and Kowalski, but not Vecchio ... which means that at some point, I'll have to make time to rectify that. ;)

On a less gleeful note, you've probably all heard about the most recent, sickening bit of fandom racefail by now? But here's a rather belated signal boost, just in case, because I think it's important to be aware of shit like this. (Link goes to the most comprehensive round-up post of the debacle, by [livejournal.com profile] amazonziti.) In a nutshell: a SPN fan decided that the tragic (and ongoing) aftermath of the Haiti earthquake would make a great backdrop for her two white dudes to ~find themselves and have hot sex, piling on plenty of painful racist and imperialistic tropes along the way. Her betas, artist, cheerleaders, and quite a few commenters apparently agreed. Eurgh.

I'm sorry for both being so late and so brief on the matter ... I may try and get a post together later about some different instances of pop culture/fannish fail I've been encountering lately (much of it about race). I hope.

Oh man, it has been an awesome week for fanart. [livejournal.com profile] glockgal's love meme is going to be my favorite thing for awhile . . . pages of new fanartists to browse through! :D Also, [livejournal.com profile] yuletart started posting today. There are already three kickass pieces up (in Futurama, Bleach, and Sandman respectively).

I've been randomly watching Buffy episodes all week (seasons 1, 3, and 5 . . . that was totally an accident), writing cards to old friends, and to further add to the procrastination nostalgia trip, I wound up drawing some random Kim Possible femslash )

Also, it occurred to me that, since it's the end of the year and all, maybe I should stop sitting on a couple of things. Awhile back, I was going to do a big fanart post for [livejournal.com profile] bexless's Heaven Help Us, but the main piece was really flopping and I put it aside for awhile. I might go back to it? But in the meantime, here are a couple of really small drawings. The first one's just directly from the text; the second takes some creative liberties.

Not that I'm not glad to see you, Father, I just don't want you to- )

This one gets warnings for blood and demonic possession. )

And now I should really go to bed, because tomorrow will involve some fairly epic errand-running.

I had a fantastic Fourth of July this year; my brother and I made our way through most of the Freedom Trail (the outdoor parts, the wait was too long on the buildings), enjoyed a pretty great view of the fireworks, and wrapped up with the obligatory 1776 viewing. (Once again, I really want to get my hands on a volume of the Adamses' correspondence.) The weather turned suddenly gorgeous, and it was just great to have him to myself for a day or two, so. :D

Of course, now I'm exhausted and sore, which is more than a little sad. Now that I'm past the most intense period of deadlines, maybe I should think about, IDK, moving once in awhile? /o\ At least the sun put a tiny bit of color into my vampire cheeks.

I'm going to go curl up with some Trek fic (finally) and try to sleep early (this promises to be one hell of a week for a number of reasons), but I actually have a tiny bit more fanart to share. I seem to have risen to a new level recently: I take breaks from art by doing other art. :D:

This is a scene from [livejournal.com profile] jjtaylor's [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang fic, Gerard Way's (Vampire) Detective Agency. If you haven't read it, you should: it's absolutely delightful. I want so many stories set in that universe.

The plant gave a shiver and: )

Right. Bed! At some point I would like to babble more about the latter seasons of Due South, or how I'm suddenly getting sucked back into DC comics again, or maybe how Amanda Palmer keeps crossing the streams and freaking me out (LoJ tickets? what?) . . . but it'll have to wait. Night! ♥
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (Default)
I LOVE ALL MY CHEMICAL ROMANCES. ♥_♥ Just in case there was still any question about that.

Something else that I love? [livejournal.com profile] bexless' Unholyverse series. I Have Been All Things Unholy was basically my dream fic. (Since I was sixteen, I've occasionally been working on a foolishly epic comic concept about Catholicism and agnosticism that features the devil masquerading as a priest. I am kind of a theology nerd. There is nothing I love more than these sorts of themes.) I really wanted to do fanart for it - heck, I'd been wanting to do priest!Gerard fanart since my second week in bandom, when I first saw the photoshoot - but weirdly, I just didn't have any ideas. Last year was not a good year for art.

I did doodle this little panel the other day . . . of course, I forgot that Ray's actually supposed to be laughing when he says that line, but that bit cracks me up every time regardless.

But hey, it's a new year, I'm a whole new fanartist, and Staring Through The Demons proved . . . very inspiring. *g*

Three images below the cut, rated no higher than PG-13. About as spoilery as it gets, in case you're saving the series up to read when it's done.

when you hover in the night like a holy vision )

Whew. I have been working on those for awhile now. :)

So last week I read The Old Straight Track by [livejournal.com profile] jjtaylor, in which Frank is a ghost and Gerard is his apartment's next occupant. There are hauntings and seances and metaphors and pining. Highly recommended, though beware the abrupt ending (she's working on the sequel :DDDD).

I love that fic, man.

Also, it was [livejournal.com profile] jjtaylor's birthday last week! So I drew this: Frank/Gerard, completely SFW )

All I have done this weekend is sit on my bed and draw MCR. (Well, practically.) I suppose I shouldn't do that.

Also, I have developed a stupid craving for obscenely sugary cereal (something I pretty much never eat). Damn you, Gerard Way! Pegwarming. I will never get tired of this fandom.

(This week I keep getting intrusive, personal IMs from people whose SNs I do not recognize. WTF?)
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (Default)
So I've been working on this and that, various holiday exchange projects . . . but I couldn't resist doing this as well. Even though it took a lot longer than expected!

For the last couple of weeks, [livejournal.com profile] mosellegreen has been posting a series of hilarious crack!ficlets to [livejournal.com profile] castlegloria. Ficlets in which Dorian Red Gloria gains superpowers. *g* I've enjoyed them greatly, and I couldn't resist adapting one of the shortest ones into a little comic.

My art isn't manga, nor is it traditional Kirbyesque superhero-style . . . I've shaded this the way I do my original indieish work. So it looks a bit weird. And I don't know if I pulled off the action, really (it's not so much my thing). But, it was so much fun to do!

Fabulousman to the rescue. )

I'll bet the 100+ people (mostly Kim Possible femslash fans) who are watching my dA account would like to kill me right about now. *g* I'll draw the pretty girls again soon enough.

[ETA:] You can now find the whole Fabulousman series (complete with work by multiple writers and artists; I don't know what's so inspiring about this concept, but!) here.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (Default)
This . . . is a piece of fanart for [livejournal.com profile] auburnnothenna and [livejournal.com profile] monanotlisa's fantastic (continuing) SgA AU, Ardhanarishvara. (If you haven't read it yet, what are you waiting for? It's fucking fantastic.) It's not of any particular scene, just two of the (altered) characters.

John and Ronon. )

I should do more black and white stuff. I've been forgetting how much I love it, even better than computer color, really.
