2021 Fannish Year In Review
Listed chronologically, from January to December.

Fic:
une sororité sanglante; La Barbe bleue (Bluebeard), M, 9.6K
narrative context; The Murderbot Diaries, Martha Wells, G, 7.3K

By total word count (16,881), my most prolific year writing ever ("une sororité sanglante" being the longest individual fic I've written to date); also the first year since the mid-aughts that I've actually written fanfic outside of Yuletide (although it was for another exchange, of course).

Art:
not roses this time; Shoujo Kakumei Utena, Utena/Anthy, G
in a new light; The Locked Tomb, Gideon/Harrow, G
denoument; Shoujo Kakumei Utena, Utena/Anthy, T
some enchanted evening; She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Perfuma/Scorpia, G
Just a gal and her Warwolf; X-Men comics, Gen, G
unforseen; "Original Work," ghost/psychic, E (NSFW)
the dimly-lit library; Shoujo Kakumei Utena, Kozue/Juri, E (NSFW)
scene slayers; BtVS, Buffy/Faith, T
Hellfire To The Rescue; New Mutants, Gen, G
well, she's no Scheherazade; Anne of Green Gables & The Addams Family, Gen, G
lady holding a rose; Steven Universe, Gen, G
something like fire; Star Trek: TOS, T'Pring/Uhura, G
charming, nonetheless; DCU, Harley/Ivy, G
lost and found; Wayfarers, Gen, G
FLOWER HURRICANE; Sailor Moon, Gen, G
hanakotoba; Sailor Moon, Haruka/Michiru, G
a rough patch; "Original Work," Gen, G
reluctant bedfellows; The Locked Tomb, Gen, G

18 works (some of which have multiple parts); not too shabby! 14-16 total fandoms represented, depending on whether you want to consider X-Men and New Mutants separate or not, and/or whether "Original Works" should be considered a single "fandom;" Shoujo Kakumei Utena tops the list of most works, which is funny, since I did all my rewatching in summer 2020 and haven't really engaged with it otherwise. Also, this is the year I caved and did some prompted original art in a fandom context.

Out of the list, I only drew one thing for myself, without an event or exchange, but that's sort of why I went overboard on the exchanges this year. I needed help propping up my creative drive ...

Exchanges & Fests
Fandom Trees: 1 work in 2021 (art)
Chocolate Box: assignment + 2 treats (art)
Smut4Smut: not signed up; 1 pinch hit (art)
Once Upon A Fic: completed assignment (fic)
Femslash Kink: assignment + 1 treat (art)
Remix Revival: assignment + 2 treats (art)
Femslash Exchange: assignment + 1 treat (art)
Yuletide: completed assignment (fic)
Multifandom Doodle: assignment + 4 treats (art)

Definitely a record year for participation; definitely too much, especially given that I wound up having to default on two other exchanges when life became much more intense in late summer/fall. I was writing for both, not drawing, which made it that much more difficult.

My takeaways are that I need to be more careful not to take on too much! Also that I can't seem to do treating if I'm writing fic for an exchange - it's just so much more time-consuming than art for me, even comic pages (well, barely; I did lose a lot of sleep finishing my Remix assignment). I'm always working down to the wire. (Then again, I'm thinking a lot more about trying out different time management techniques, now that I have this ADHD diagnosis, so maybe someday.)

I've also been more active on Tumblr again, somehow. Less interactive than in the past, but it's nice to see fandom things buzzing along (and the Marvel/X-Men comics fandom seems to be a lot more active there, albeit mostly among younger folks, in keeping with the general tendency of the site). I don't suppose I'll ever quite stop missing the bustling LJ days, though I also feel unwilling to go reinventing the wheel by looking for Discords to hang around (and I really don't know how to find those in the wild, at all).

2022 plans include: only doing art for exchanges, except Once Upon A Fic (I can't resist) and Yuletide (always), probably continuing to be in this weirdly nostalgic Sailor Moon/Marvel Comics place (although honestly, with Marvel I'm exploring a lot of material that's new to me, so it's more like a resumption than a revisitation). We'll see what happens later, I guess. Maybe I'll stumble on a new megafandom (but I'd be pretty surprised).

In more current news, I'm reccing X-Men comics fanart over on [community profile] fanart_recs this month! You should totally check it out, although I'll probably also do a roundup post of my recs once I'm done. (Done with this month, anyway. I've been collecting amazing fanart, on deviantArt and tumblr for so long ... I'm feeling the urge to share the love.)

One final thought, if anyone else who enjoys The Locked Tomb happens to be around: have you seen the summary for Nona the Ninth yet??? (Not sure when the update actually happened, but I only saw it the other day.) I'm going to die of suspense, JFC.
