Huh. A bit belatedly, I've been reading around through the recent posts people were making about fandom and monetization and "gift economies" etc etc. It's interesting, complicated stuff. ( Herein lies some unedited rambling about personal experiences, and a brief discussion of the differing commercial histories of contemporary fanart and fanfiction. )
