See, the only way I can come to terms with the story is believing that neither of them are good/nice guys. That basically the "Nice Guy" (tm) (as in the guy that is always there for the girl because he secretly wants to get in her pants, not because he cares about her actually) and the macho prick both lose out because they were too self-absorbed in their own little self-made dramas to realize who they were hurting with their actions.
But the person who still loses out the most is the one that dies. :/
