So
ataratah and I have talked a lot about our early love for Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, and awhile back she suggested that we try doing some kind of related art project! This is my piece based on the first of a series of prompts she suggested: a panel from the manga, redrawn in my own style. It was ridiculously fun, hanging around in a cafe, working on these together.
So here's the original panel, from what would be the SuperS season of the anime:

I wanted to try something that would be really unusual for me (as opposed to my street clothes interpretation of Neptune & Uranus a little while back), and something that was just essentially of the series. So, an image of Sailor Moon and Sailor ChibiMoon, having just transformed. Here's my interpretation:

I don't think I quite appreciated how dramatically stylized their proportions were in the original, until I started trying to convert them to my own style! Making ChibiUsa look like a small child was a particular challenge (I think I did a better job on her proportions than her face, anyway). Overall, I'm pretty pleased with this ... for all that they're wearing frilly little skirts and bows, I think they do look like they could pretty much kick your ass! Also, those bizarre hair styles are undeniably fun to draw.
I did some very simple spraypainting in Photoshop to try and approximate Takeuchi's screentones. It doesn't quite work the same way, though. At some point, I'd kind of like to try that out.
So that was fun! I can't wait to start the next prompt, though I have to space these things out with ... other fanart obligations, of course. (I am pretty much just going to do as much fanart as I can manage 'til I leave, I think.)
You seriously, SERIOUSLY have to go check out
ataratah's answer to this part of our challenge, over here (or on LJ). It is drop-dead gorgeous. I cannot get over how fucking graceful her linework and gestures are; she's taken one of the simpler manga panels and just made it come alive. (Also, I don't know if any of you have ever watched PGSM--the live-action Sailor Moon--but I ship Rei/Minako like burning, and this is some of the best fanart of them I've seen.)
Just wait until you see what she has in store for the next two prompts!
