Happy New Year, friends! It's all very symbolic, I know, but I'm going ahead and embracing the relief of leaving 2020 behind. It was a terrible year for me on every level, and I really have no positive spin to put on it. Good riddance.
On a brighter note, Yuletide reveals! I had really wanted this to be the year of treating, but alas, pandemic malaise wouldn't allow for it. Still, I enjoyed writing my assignment:
entre'acts
Wayward Children Series - Seanan McGuire
Alexis Chopper/Jack Wolcott, T, 6.4K
When home is a horror movie world, happily ever after isn’t really part of the package; happily in-between, within the pauses in the tale, are where life is lived and where peace can be found.
My recipient,
Cakemage, wanted Jack and Alexis to have a chance to be happy, and requested (situationally-appropriate) fluff. It was a good challenge, and ultimately I decided to craft a series of missing scenes set in between and after the events of Down Among the Sticks and Bones and Come Tumbling Down, with a tiny bit of catharsis around Jack and Jill at the end, as well.
Also, here is a tiny batch of initial recs.

Carmilla - J. Sheridan LeFanu
Carmilla/Laura, G, 4.1K
A lovely, sad exploration of Carmilla's backstory, written in epistolary format from the character's own perspective mid-canon. It fits extremely well with the story in both tone and content, and does a good deal to illuminate the inner life and motives of a classic but thoroughly opaque character.

The Locked Tomb Trilogy - Tamsyn Muir
Ortus Nigenad/Abigail Pent/Magnus Quinn, G, 1K
Pre-threesome scene in which Ortus is awkward and poetic, Magnus is sweet and a bit awkward, and Abigail is thoroughly enjoying herself. Made me chuckle.
The Emperor's Daughter, by

The Locked Tomb Trilogy - Tamsyn Muir
Gideon/Harrow, Harrow/Ianthe, Gideon/Ianthe, T, 2.3K
A hilarious little expansion on Harrow's royal ball AU from Harrow the Ninth, in which Ianthe and Gideon both flirt with Harrow in very ... signature ways, and Harrow is deeply affronted.

The Locked Tomb Trilogy - Tamsyn Muir
Ortus Nigenad/Matthias Nonius, M, 1.7K
(Okay, full disclosure: I beta'd this. A little. But seriously.) After departing Harrow's bubble, our dearly-departed heroes go to fight the resurrection beast in the River ... as memorialized, somehow, by Ortus's own usual epic stylings. Written in dactylic enneameter, ye gods, which had to be (and I happen to know, was) painful, but it's hilarious and even a little touching here and there. Just beautiful.
The Yunk and the Restless, by
Nomad
Monstrous Regiment - Terry Pratchett (Discworld)
Maladict/Polly "Ozzer" Perks, T, 3.4K
Out on campaign, Mal and Polly are invited to spend the night at a local castle, where the ... traditionally vampiric atmosphere proves to be somewhat challenging for Mal's self-control. Delightfully Pratchett-esque prose and puns, with a pleasingly shippy conclusion.

Humans Are Space Orcs (meme)
Original Female Alien/Original Female Human, G, 1.4K
I love this meme, but I definitely tend to think of it as comedic, and this fic defies that expectation beautifully. A sweet, solemn look at a human's attitude towards what is widely considered an undesirable and deadly career assignment from the perspective of the alien who feels very differently about said circumstances, but nevertheless comes to care for her. Lovely.
More later, I hope, but now I'm going to get to work on my
chocolateboxcomm sign-up. If you're meant to spend New Year's Day on the sort of pursuits you want to continue throughout the year, I feel good about my choices.
I hope 2021 is good to you all. (Or else!)
