Happy New Year, friends! It's all very symbolic, I know, but I'm going ahead and embracing the relief of leaving 2020 behind. It was a terrible year for me on every level, and I really have no positive spin to put on it. Good riddance.

On a brighter note, Yuletide reveals! I had really wanted this to be the year of treating, but alas, pandemic malaise wouldn't allow for it. Still, I enjoyed writing my assignment:

entre'acts
Wayward Children Series - Seanan McGuire
Alexis Chopper/Jack Wolcott, T, 6.4K
When home is a horror movie world, happily ever after isn’t really part of the package; happily in-between, within the pauses in the tale, are where life is lived and where peace can be found.

My recipient, [archiveofourown.org profile] Cakemage, wanted Jack and Alexis to have a chance to be happy, and requested (situationally-appropriate) fluff. It was a good challenge, and ultimately I decided to craft a series of missing scenes set in between and after the events of Down Among the Sticks and Bones and Come Tumbling Down, with a tiny bit of catharsis around Jack and Jill at the end, as well.

Also, here is a tiny batch of initial recs in Carmilla, The Locked Tomb, Monstrous Regiment, and Humans Are Space Orcs (meme). )

More later, I hope, but now I'm going to get to work on my [community profile] chocolateboxcomm sign-up. If you're meant to spend New Year's Day on the sort of pursuits you want to continue throughout the year, I feel good about my choices.

I hope 2021 is good to you all. (Or else!)

This is such a weird year, and a weird/sad holiday season; I’m so grateful to fandom for being my constant through all this. I’m making characteristically slow progress through my "marked for later" list, and I’ll hopefully get some more recs out later, but I don’t want to wait to show off my awesome gifts:

what slows down the nights to a long lingering crawl
The Queen’s Thief - Megan Whalen Turner
Gen-ish (Irene/Eugenides, Helen/Sophos), T, 2.3K
A lovely, peaceful, and sometimes bittersweet look at much of the main cast of the series post-canon, with insights into the fragility of peace and the ongoing complexity of politics and royal life, as well as love and companionship.

To Brie or Not To Brie
Gamechanger - L.X. Beckett
Gen-ish (pre-Rubi Whiting/Gimlet Barnes), G, 1.5K
Multi-layered meta exploration of the fannish culture around semi-scripted VR game celebrities in the social media heavy world of this sadly obscure book, with some lovely pre-canon pining! I was blown away to receive a treat in this fandom. It’s great, and more people should read the book, enjoy this fic, and write more!

Also, for anyone who is still feeling the gift-giving spirit and creative momentum, [community profile] fandomtrees is ongoing! You could leave some lucky fan a ficlet, or a drawing, or maybe some recipe or book recs! Here are some trees with no presents yet.

My own tree is over here, and while it lists a few specific fandoms/prompts/etc, any little thing in the fandoms I love (and the prompts in my past exchange letters) would fill me with joy. Which I have to admit ... I could really use more of right now. Things are really hard. I know they are for just about everyone else, too.

Much love to you all - I hope you’re happy and safe and with loved ones (human or otherwise).

Hello! Thank you so much for being my writer this year. I always look forward to Yuletide, but this year is ... something else. Getting to participate in a big, creative gift exchange with a huge pile of other fans is exactly what I need right now, and I very much hope it's a fun and fulfilling experience for you, too. Seriously: if you have fun writing a story for one of these fandoms, you'll have given me what I want by definition.

I'm one of those people who gives you a giant pile of words about each fandom, which you're welcome to use if you want but are absolutely not expected to do. Optional Details Are Optional, and letters doubly so. You clearly have great taste (given that you picked one of these books) - write what you want to write! I can't wait to read it.

A note for intrepid letter-browsers: all of my fandoms this year are SFF books/series which were at least partially released in the last decade, and can be found in print, ebook and audiobook formats (availability from specific sources may vary).

I am so very pleased with my [community profile] femslashex assignment. It's exactly the sort of thing I want to be working on right now - the biggest challenge will be settling on one idea (and not overextending)!

Trying to turn my brain to Yuletide nominations is proving to be a little bit of a struggle just at present. (Honestly, I'm having a really hard time focusing on anything with more than surface attention. It's part of being out of steam for what a 5-alarm fire the whole world is and has been this year, and I hope I get a second wind soon.)

Some things I'm considering. )

Well, I have time to ponder, I guess. Hopefully I'll have more brain-space this weekend.
