I'm just a little bouncy and distracted at work today, waiting to leave early so I can head over to Lowell for my Believers Never Die show. :DDD

So I'm pondering something, and I could maybe use flister advice. I just paid off a rather large bill for the webspace I share with a couple of friends (we thought we'd set up automatic payments quite some time ago, but apparently it never took). We've shared the domain since high school, and I'm a little attached to it, but I'm starting to wonder if it's worth keeping.

Neither of my friends have updated their sites in a few years, and [livejournal.com profile] sweetvalleyslut is off in the Peace Corps now, so she won't touch hers anytime soon. I haven't updated in awhile either, really; I do use the sites to showcase my art, but I could probably do that just as easily from a blog of some kind? Easier, really. (I use deviantArt too, but I'm not exactly in love with it.)

Artists on my flist, what do you think? (Or, you know, anyone else. :)) Is it that important to have your own personal website? (Or I might think about getting one just for my original work at some point, and keep fanart to LJ/DW/DA. I'd still need to host the work somewhere - people seem to use Photobucket for that a lot?)

When we chose to get our own site and domain for our webcomic, it was a decision made purely because we wanted complete control. We didn't want someone else making choices about our content or possibly changing their policies mid-stream or even simply one day closing up shop and leaving our comic homeless.

We could've gone with a journaling service or something like Keenspot, but we wanted something we had control over and where we didn't have to put up with odd changes or possible loss of our content.

I hear you on this; it's more or less the rationale I was operating on when my friends and I bought our domain. I had all kinds of problems with the various free options I'd started out on (Geocities, Elfwood).

I think that, if I were to develop a bigger audience (or any audience at all), a domain of my own would probably be a great idea. For right now, though, I'm not even actively seeking one, and the domain feels a bit like an expensive indulgence. There are also free services that I like a lot better, these days. I'll have to consider further.

I dig having my own site mostly because it's my identity, precious, and I wants it. I also use it to have something short to link to in my email sig, and a place to keep a full list of every profile or account I have online through which I want people to find me.

Well, I definitely want some kind of central net presence . . . I'm just thinking that it might wind up being a blogspot or something, for the timebeing. :)

Aw, I'm sorry I missed this comment! I didn't see you there, but I did have early entry with a few people. I hope you had fun!
