yeti!Dewees says happy holidays

Apologies; this is late for the majority of holidays, I believe, except New Years! As is just about everything I've tried to accomplish this year. I have this bad habit of treating most of my vacations as convalescences; my main resolution this year, naturally, is to try to stop overdoing everything. (No really.)

It's been a lovely bit of R&R, although I've barely even scratched the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide surface or spent much time online; too busy tripping and falling into Connie Willis' Blackout/All Clear. (Another problem I have in re overdoing things: reading in moderation does not come naturally!) That said, I'm absurdly excited about the abundant Downton Abbey fic this year, and what I have read (mostly Blue Beetle and Community), I've enjoyed immensely. I may have to do recs; I don't remember the last time I did that!

Anyway, have some brief RL blather about Christmas. )

Also some belated Sherlock Holmes reaction! )

Ack, must cut this short (rather than discussing any Christmas specials I may have watched yesterday - oh, Downton Abbey), but hi, I hope you're all having a lovely winter, holiday season, last few weeks, etc!

So this was a year.

If there’s one thing 2010 hasn’t been, it’s boring. I can't really get into all the ups and downs, which have been considerable, but one thing does stand out. I spent a good chunk of this year really committing to the work I’ve been faltering towards for years: in some ways, I’d say that I earned the right to call myself a cartoonist. Not in the sense that I’m getting PAID, or that much of anyone has heard of me who wouldn’t have for other reasons, but in the most important sense: I made comics and art, continuously, and I started working to put it out where people could see it. That is … an incredibly significant shift, one I’ll need to keep building on.

I'm leaving this year with a fair amount of pride and a sizable chunk of regret; for once, I have some actual resolutions to fulfill, and I mean them. Whatever else 2011 brings, however, I am quitting my job and going to comic school, and that's more than enough to be excited about. Before that, I get to have concerts, and I've promised myself more fanart. After all, I need to relearn how to take breaks. ;) And I've missed fandom all year.

Of course, I have to make it through one last January admissions hell first.

I hope the New Year is good to all of you amazing people (the old one, I know, was not what many of you deserved). ♥ I am, as always, grateful to know you to the extent that I do.

I'm not sure it's even worth doing a fanart roundup this year, but it's short enough to tuck in here, so why not.
-four illustrations for Only Going One Way, by [personal profile] jjtaylor and [personal profile] ataratah
-untitled Star Trek: AOS band AU art, for [livejournal.com profile] trekreversebang
-writer’s block (featuring [personal profile] jjtaylor and Brian Schechter)
-The Dragon Of The West, Victorious (Again) for [livejournal.com profile] scribbleomania, for [livejournal.com profile] yuletart

(Also a number of locked pieces that were published somewhere under my real name. This secret identity business is kind of a pain in the ass.)

Hey guys, hey! I'm kind of wiped out ... it's been an intense few months for me, so naturally, I wind up working overtime two days before I finally get to take a vacation. (Not that I'm not extremely grateful, mind; my job has some substantial perks, and perhaps the biggest is more than a week off at the end of the year. I'll miss it.) I have so many plans for this time, though I'm probably going to have to start by sleeping a lot.

I have quite a bit of art stuff on the brain right now. (Well, as usual.) For one thing, I'm kind of pondering selling some original work for the first time ever. It occurs to me that I really have no idea how to set prices for something like that. /o\

Also, I'm getting behind on my [livejournal.com profile] yuletart commenting, but if you haven't yet, you should go check out the amazing work that's been going up! And speaking of output, I hope [livejournal.com profile] yuletide has gone well for those of you participating this year, in spite of the stress. ♥ The rush of frantic posts over the last week or so has made me a bit wistful.

Here's that fannish year meme that's been going around. )

I've put in my dues at the sketchbook for the evening, so I think I'm going to go curl up with a good story. If you're in bandom and haven't noticed that [personal profile] jjtaylor has posted The Detective's Secret and the Mystery of the Dancing Flowers (AKA the sequel to Gerard Way's (Vampire) Detective Agency), well, wake up and smell the coriander. :D I have been waiting for this story for months. :DDD

Also, I just watched the Christmas episode of Leverage, and it snowed today. (At last!) I think some holiday spirit might finally be seeping in, for real.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (leap of faith - fic illustration)
I finally finished my grad school application last night, and I'm taking it to the post office in about an hour! \o/ Good gods, that took forever; I guess it's appropriate, though, since I've been waiting to do it for years. Now I really need distrations - good thing I have about four more projects of varying sizes to complete by the end of the year! I haven't done much on my [livejournal.com profile] yuletart piece, but I've got my idea pretty well figured out, so I'll have to tackle that first. Yay, fanart!

I've been doing my best to avoid reading much of anything about the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide process this year, because that's always really distracting - buuut, I've slipped enough to search the list of confirmed fandoms a few times, and I'm so excited to read the archive this year! So many amazing comics in particular, and I'm really hoping for great Community fic. And BATWOMAN. (And maybe Nikita? I can't decide what I want, exactly, but I'm stubbornly loving that show in spite of problems. I want so much more of the title character than canon's ever likely to give me, or at least, do well.) I'm sad that [personal profile] glockgal's desi Supernatural comics don't seem to have made the cut, though? Unless I'm missing something? And there are, as always, a few fandoms that sort of freak me out. (Webcomics creator RPF, for instance. I met a bunch of those folks a week ago.) That's the magic of Yuletide, though. I wonder if I'll want to participate again, after taking this year off?

On the whole, I'm not feeling particularly feverish about fandom lately; I'm more in the mood for character studies and rare characters/fandoms than OTP epics, so that's seasonally appropriate. :) Although, I did just finish listening to the entirety of Harry Potter (as read by Stephen Fry) again while comicking, and I could go for some of that, I think. The only trouble is, I really have no idea where to look anymore. /o\

I've been severely haphazard about my DW/LJ reading during the last few months, naturally. I hope you're all well! I've missed you. ♥
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (make some noise - look alive sunshine)
Erm, so if any non-bandomers were completely confused by my incoherently giddy post last night? I was referring to the recently-released trailer for My Chemical Romance's upcoming post-apocalyptic concept album. Sorry about that, guys. I might be a TINY bit excited? :D

Also! [livejournal.com profile] yuletart sign-ups are officially open! All the lovely, talented fanartists on my flist should go join in the multifandom fun! Seriously, it's the most awesome time. I can't wait to find out what my assignment will be this year!

I have decided that I won't be participating in [livejournal.com profile] yuletide this year--for the first time since the fest started--because it takes more energy and inspiration than I have to spare right now. (I'll probably have to sit out the next couple years as well, because grad school.) SADNESS. :( I should probably stick to the one fest, although if anyone hears about any particularly tantalizing art-inclusive seasonal exchanges ... well. I'm going to have a lot of fannish motivation around that time, I b'lieve.

Inking over lunchbreak, whee.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (ella ella eh eh eh)
There is probably something about hiatuses that makes you want to post more. This is really just quick linking, though.

First, [livejournal.com profile] yuletart nominations have just opened! If you participated last year, that means you should get your tail over there and nominate stuff. :D If you haven't participated, and you're a fanartist of any stripe, sign-ups will be opening in just over two weeks! Sign up. Seriously, it is the best fest I've participated in ever - multifannish and super-friendly! The contributions from past years are seriously amazing, too - go poke through the archives!

On a less happy note, via twitter - [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda has a couple more livejournal privacy breaches to warn you about.

(I do have a whole bunch of dreamwidth codes, by the way, if anyone out there is considering making the switch. Feel free to comment or PM me.)

Right, I'm gone again. /o\
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (human behavior - the future is uncertain)
I haven't been spending much time on the internet, this break! Well, apart from reading [livejournal.com profile] yuletide stories, anyway. ;) A lot has been going on. I spent the better part of two days with a visiting [livejournal.com profile] sweetvalleyslut, took my little brother to see my favorite small band (Enter the Haggis, of course), and oh right: someone tried to burn down my TOWN. Jesus fucking christ. My family and friends are all fine, but that was an awful business. (I am hoping so hard that the past tense is appropriate, here. These are not the first "suspicious" fires we've had in recent years, though they were the first--and hopefully last--deaths.)

2009 has not been a banner year for most people I know (to put it lightly, in some cases), and in general this decade has seen some severe downs (though it's had its ups as well). In spite of a whole lot of political fatigue, I'm trying to keep my hopes up for the new year. I have a lot of plans for it!

I'll save my list of the year's fanworks for after [livejournal.com profile] yuletart and [livejournal.com profile] yuletide reveals, but have a New Year's art meme. )

Happy New Year to all of you lovely people. ♥ I met quite a few of you over the course of the last year, and got to know several of you much better than I had before! I'm very grateful for that part, lumps and bumps aside. :)
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (love - friendship - hi there!)
My family's getting ready to head across state to visit my grandmother in her nursing home, rather than our usual cozy lingering over presents in our PJs. (My mother is worried about the weather tomorrow. IDK. It's a good thing to do anyway. :)) So I must be brief.

Merry Christmas, darling flisters, to those of you who celebrate it! (And to the rest of you - I hope you have a really awesome day. ♥)

Check out what I found in my stocking: Glories Stream, a delightfully sexy and irreverent look at Heaven, based on Dar Williams's "Alleluia." I am absolutely thrilled with it! The tags list alone almost made me crack up out loud (which would have caused awkward questions from my family) .

Also, I see that someone else has written for the same prompt I did, which is also exciting - it's a fandom/pairing that I'd really like to read, you know? :D Man, I can't wait to dive into the archive later, in general. Also, I need to catch up on my [livejournal.com profile] yuletart commenting. (Still can't get over the incredible quality and variety of the work there!)

Must dash. Love!
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (all kinds of random - yesterday you were)
Hey flist! Would any of you happen to have the Snow Miser/Heat Miser song from The Year Without A Santa Clause? And if so, would you mind sharing? My silly holiday pops mix is lacking.

Ty, bbs. ♥
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (crack - confusion - totes Batman)
[livejournal.com profile] yuletide signal boost, since I know some folks on my flist were thinking about pinch-hitting: there was a problem with Yahoogroups and now you have to contact a different email address if you want to claim one of the pinch-hits that have already been sent out. (Not sure yet how the rest are going out.)

I got my story uploaded with about two hours to spare, and headed into the Square for what was meant to be a brief celebratory dinner with comics-boy. And two and a half hours later, realized that I'd totally lost my entire evening. /o\ I needed a break, but the next two days are going to be a frantic whirl of wrapping, packing, mixing, drawing, and sending out belated cards, so um. I'm probably going to be scarce, online and off.

Also, I bought myself a brand new pair of combat boots (to replace the six-year-old pair that were very slowly starting to fall off my feet). I'm trying to be cautious/slow about breaking them in, but my ankles are kind of on fire right now. Still happy, though!

[ETA:] There's a new back-up pinch-hit mailing list for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide!
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (pretty villainy - out of costume)
Hey guys, heads' up - this year, [livejournal.com profile] yuletide Madness will be open to anyone with an AO3 account. (That's when you get to write fic of any length based on any of the unfilled prompts! I've only participated once, but it was a blast.) I don't have any invitations right now, but you might know someone who does - and the invitation queue generally seems to move at a pretty fast clip.

I'm polishing up my final story; should be able to have it uploaded whole hours before the deadline. ;) I wrote all day long yesterday! It was awesome. (Now I'm having third or fourth thoughts on this being my last year. /o\ Of course. Well, it's not like I have to decide now - although I'm also planning to apply to my wacky grad school of choice next year.)

In other news, Mikeyway is so fucking adorable. ♥

Happy Solstice, lovelies! Um. Some of your cards are totally going to be late. (Certainly the international ones I put in the mail today will be, as the lady at the post office smugly informed me. :/) I'm sorry! But ILU all to bits, you know. ♥♥♥
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (delighted grin - aw thanks)
My [livejournal.com profile] yuletide story is going agonizingly slowly . . . so per as usual, then! I know what's happening all the way through, thank god, but that doesn't make it easy to put my thoughts on the page. Seriously, these word things are frustrating! Writing with pictures (or preferably a combination) is so much easier. :/

But but but! [livejournal.com profile] yuletart has been delighting me throughout, and now I have art of my very own! :DDD Check out the hilarious (and pretty!) AOS OT3 comic panel that somebody drew all for me. (I am maybe a little overexcited and sleep deprived. But seriously!) I love everything about it, from the classic presentation to Spock's hilarious (but totes logical) thought bubble. Oh man, I am so happy right now.

Back to work. But. :D
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (back to the stage)
Working on my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic is making me listen to more Tori Amos than I have in a long time. I'm too tied up in knots to get nostalgic, though, so that's good!

So, what do those of you who write fic do when you're working with an open canon? Particularly one that's full of suspense and unsolved mysteries? Do you just sort of make guesses and have fun with things you know will be jossed, or do you focus in on character relationships and little day-to-day normalities, and just sort of slide past the questions you're leaving unanswered?

Just curious. ;)

I've spent my evening alternately messing with notes/outlines, and working on cards with Pushing Daisies in the background. (God, this show is adorable!) I should sleep; I have managed to set tomorrow entirely aside for continuing both tasks. And maybe shopping for a calendar online, because I swear, there are no literary-themed calendars within the Cambridge city limits, and I don't have time to comb through Boston too. Shopping for my dad: WHY SO DIFFICULT?

But first! There is Middleman fanart at [livejournal.com profile] yuletart. \o/ Sculpture, even. The quality and variety of the work this year has been completely fantastic in general . . . maybe I actually will do recs, but seriously, go see! It makes me so impatient, because I love getting four or five new pieces of art to view every day, but at the same time, I want to see them all right now.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (in the glow of the stage lights)
Hey flist, hey! How are you, bbs?

I have a question. Do any of you have recommendations for a really super easy beginner-level cookbook? (Like, for a soon-to-be college grad who barely knows how to boil pasta?) I was trying to think of a practical Christmas present for my bb brother, and cooking, and it occurred to me that he is going to need to learn to feed himself soon. He doesn't strike me as the type to raid food blogs, the way I do, and he probably wouldn't be into most of my (vegetarian, first-order-ingredient-focused, deeply random) recipe collection.

I'm going to poke around my favorite local independent bookstore tomorrow, but I thought I might try you guys first. :)

I have spent this weekend freaking out about my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic before finally having a breakthrough. (This always seems to happen in the shower - is that just me?) Whew. Sometimes I wonder if I should stick to fanart and comics, but I feel as though it's really important to keep practicing prose writing, and anyway I love the fest to bits. Amazing as [livejournal.com profile] yuletart is, there's really nothing quite like it.

I watched the latest White Collar episode last night, and um, holy shit. I've been on a fairly mild enjoyment level with that show for most of its run so far, but talk about taking it up a notch! And that was even before the last minute or so.

The butternut squash soup I've been cooking all afternoon really needs to be done now so I can eat it and get back to writing.

[ETA:] OMG SNOWFLAKE! Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] glockgal. ♥ We had our first real snow last night and I'm still super happy about it.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (human behavior - the future is uncertain)
It's freezing cold in my office! Why?

So I don't know if I'm the absolute latest or what, but have you guys seen this? It's an unused scene written for Shatner at the end of AOS (I can't seem to settle on terminology here), and um, holy shit. (As [livejournal.com profile] guinsky put it, "YOUR JOB IS TO LOVE ME, SPOCK. COME BACK AND LOVE ME.") I really want to rewatch a lot of TOS now, but I really have to buckle down and focus on my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fandom, which is a very different sort of thing. (Anyway I can watch TOS when my mother opens her Christmas present from me this year! So long as we can hear it over the sound of my dad's groaning.)

Tangentially, I am really irked by the dearth of Uhura fanart on dA. (Not to mention the actual bashing, which is so much easier to avoid on LJ. Ugh.) I think that will have to be a priority after the holidays.

Other things. I keep putting off watching the most recent episode of Eastwick, because I've heard that it will finally upset me a whole lot. :/ MCR blog posts from months ago keep popping up as "new" items on my Google Reader for some reason. (Teases!) People on the internet keep saying that Twilight is totes good for women because it demonstrates our power at the box office, which I think is awful bullshit. And, Greta is pretty. *_*

[livejournal.com profile] yuletart posting begins on Friday! I'm so excited. You guys should tune in for all the kickass multifandom art.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (retcons - comics are on crack)
I had a fantastically productive long weekend! I finished my [livejournal.com profile] yuletart contribution with time to spare, cooked one third of our small Thanksgiving dinner, got a decent start on my holiday shopping, and finished/ordered my holiday cards (if you want one, tell me). So of course now I don't want to do much of anything, least of all work.

Maybe I'll give myself one evening to just futz around reading Trekfic before I pull together a writing schedule and all that jazz. (Anyone have recent recs they're just itching to share? I have a couple of things I've been wanting to check out, but I'm generally interested in what everyone's been reading. :) Other fandoms too!)

I hope you're all well and not suffering from any undue seasonal stress, bbs. ♥
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (hard at work - drawing - garry)
I am pretty thoroughly submerged right now! I've been working on coloring my [livejournal.com profile] yuletart piece for days and there is so much more to do, which is kind of ridiculous. I'm not sure I've done such an elaborate coloring job (if still full of fudging and workarounds because I fail at Photoshop). . . ever. How does fandom always do this to me?

I really would like to finish it before I go home Wednesday evening, but that's looking more and more unlikely. /o\

Every time I surface briefly to glance at my flist, somebody has posted pictures of Adam Lambert kissing some dude. (Well, maybe that has just been today, since I guess he kissed the dude last night? But it feels like longer.) Ahaha, you guys. I am . . . not really taken with his music, for the most part (apart from the album title track, which is pretty spectacular), but your enthusiasm is endearing. Plus the shitty homophobic comments I stumble on elsewhere on the tubes almost make me wish I were more into him; I am kind of glad he exists, either way.

I'm only a little bit bitter that none of my fandoms has a David Bowie song challenge (so far as I know). :p

Anyway I'm behind on my un-canceled television (Merlin, White Collar) because I can only watch actual DVDs while I color (our player won't play my video files), and after I finish my drawing I have six pages of [livejournal.com profile] yuletide source notes to immerse myself in . . . so I guess I'll remain pretty absent for the holiday duration. However! The MCR publicity machine has started revving again, slowly, and I am pleasantly anticipatory for the coming year. :) Even though it will not contain a second season of Eastwick (was I the only one watching that, dammit? boo).

And whoops, I owe a couple of you holiday card exchange info. (Speaking of things I should really try to get done this week, and whee, more Photoshop. /o\)
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (Default)
Last night [livejournal.com profile] fuschia and I saw Amanda Palmer play in my hometown (in the venue where I had tickets but missed the Dresden Dolls twice), and she covered House of the Rising Sun (along with Nervous Cabaret). My god, that was hot.

There are lots of exciting things going on! I got myself an Archive of Our Own account (and you can too; open beta is open). Now I have to look at my sad little collection of fic and decide what stays and what goes, because I definitely need to get rid of my website. (I'm looking forward to being able to post fanart there, too! But I suspect it might be awhile.) Also my Star Trek reboot DVD shipped yesterday, and I'm unreasonably excited to be able to rewatch that while working on various holiday projects. ;)

Speaking of which: would you like a holiday card from me? Here is a poll.

I should go hang out with my mom now, rather than obsessively watching for my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide assignment (or worse, checking through handy spreadsheets for all the people who requested my fandoms).

P.S.: GIVE ME THAT ALBUM, MCR! >:( I need some Black Dragon Fighting Society in my life.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (om nom nom - the classiest)
So, guess who has ten fingers and toes, but only one apartment? \o/

I feel like I can breathe again, oh man. Now I can turn my fuller attention to making my awesome new apartment even more awesome, and focus more on other projects. Holiday projects, mostly, and not before time! I did a whole bunch of work on my [livejournal.com profile] yuletart piece last night in a celebratory rush of inspiration. I think it's going to be pretty awesome.

I've also posted my fairly epic [livejournal.com profile] yuletide letter, so now I'm just sitting here obsessively keeping track of sign-ups, per as always. ;) Of my ten offered fandoms, eight have been requested at least once . . . all but the two I actually offered "Any" characters for. /o\ OH WELL. I have no clue what I'm likely to wind up with, really, but I'm so excited!

It's a gorgeous damn day, and I need to go out into it so I can drop off my old apartment keys and pick up some straggling mail. But! I have already started planning out this year's holiday card, and I think I'm actually going to make it happen in a physical, hard-copy kind of way. (Something I always try for, but never manage.) So, poll!

Please take the poll at my LJ.

The card will not be fandom-oriented; it will include a couple of my own original characters, along a wintry theme. Comments are screened; please feel free to leave any thoughts, and if you want to participate, your address. (You can also email me at fairiesbite at yahoo dot com.) ♥

Dear Yule Goat,

Thank you so much for being my writer! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your efforts already, mysterious and awesome person. I should also warn you: this letter is long. This is intended to give you more options (if you want them), rather than freak you out, so . . . I hope it doesn't. Freak you out, that is. ♥

General blather! )

Requests and additional thoughts )

I think that's probably plenty to be going on with, yeah? Like I said before: feel free to use as much or as little as you like. I'm quite convinced that I'm going to love whatever you come up with. ♥

Thank you again, and happy writing!
