If you haven't already been deluged by the squee on your flist, Yuletide Sign-Ups Are Open! :D Detailed instructions can be found here.

I think I have finally managed to achieve some kind of obscure ideal here, but we'll see. ;) Hopefully I haven't managed to render myself unmatchable. (I know it's unlikely, but I did restrict characters for most things.) I'm almost nervous to see how many people we get this year (I don't remember seeing quite so many 'new this year' comments in the past)! Also, watch my concentration be shot for the next week.

Year seven, dear gods.

There is so much leftover Halloween candy around the office today. Seriously, did all the kids in Central Mass stay home on Saturday?

Oh, [livejournal.com profile] yuletide season. So ridiculous. I have the google doc with my "to offer" list open in the background as I work, and I just keep deleting things and then adding them back. (Surely someone will want Eastwick femslash? I love Paul Gross to handsome talented bits, but I don't think I want to write anything focusing on Darryl.) I'm looking forward to sign-ups opening, so I can stop second-guessing myself and just take the damn plunge.

Speaking of Eastwick, I'm a little weirded out by how much I'm enjoying it. I keep expecting every episode to be the one that finally pisses me off, but . . . it keeps not happening. (And meanwhile: walked through fire. ♥ Uh, yeah. I sort of feel like I'm thirteen again and making hearthands over Now and Then, but what the hell.)

I've been in post-move hibernation mode for the last couple of weeks, so I've been watching a lot of tv (and reading YA fantasy novels . . . in my defense, The Dark Is Rising is not a series I'd read before). I got my new roomie watching some first season Farscape with me--it's really a shame that I only have a handful of episodes (maybe I'll ask for it for Christmas)--wondered again why I've never watched more than a handful of episodes of Psych, and fell in love with White Collar (least surprising ever). Has anyone written a Leverage crossover yet? Because seriously, people. (I want the lesbian agent back, though. Can't we have her and Natalie?)

Also, why did nobody tell me that the Star Trek: Animated Series is really fun? It features things like Tiny Spock, and kickass Uhura (and Chapel) taking charge of the ship! (Why couldn't there have been just one TOS episode like that?) The animation's pretty crummy, but some of the background painting is pretty gorgeous.

Goal for the week: pin down my [livejournal.com profile] yuletart contribution. If I haven't at least decided on a fandom by the time [livejournal.com profile] yuletide sign-ups open, there will be panic and bloodshed.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (everything old is new again)
Whee, so, I moved. My new place is pretty fantastic; the kitchen's a bit small (we're going to have to purchase extra storage, or we'll have to somehow choose between having food and having things to cook/eat with), but my room's bigger than the other and my new roomie has a pretty fabulous (eccentric) sense of decor. (I will probably picspam eventually, once I've had time to unpack and decorate a bit.) We broke in our shiny new TV by watching Beetlejuice over take-out pasta. I think things are going to be awesome.

Well, except that there's still nobody to replace me on my old lease. I refuse to panic. Things are not going to un-busy themselves for awhile yet, clearly.

And fandom's still lovely and distracting! I am psyched about my [livejournal.com profile] yuletart assignment, omg. Only it was a very good matching job (&mods;), and I'm having trouble choosing between four different fandoms. ([livejournal.com profile] guinsky says I can't do more than one piece. She's probably right.) I could maybe do a crossover? IDK IDK IDK.

(Dear Yuletart Santa: I don't have much to add, but I hope you have fun! I am already thrilled. Oh, and JSYK, there was no fandom order of preference there at all, for serious.)

I also wound up changing my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide nominations. )

I can't wait until nominations close, so I can start putting a to-offer list together! I'm intrigued by some of the album nominations, although I have to say . . . I don't really get some of them. There's no real overarching theme or common "characters" in Graceland, say, or Revolver, or most of Dar's albums. I know people enjoy stretching in all kinds of directions for this challenge, and I really enjoy watching them go, but I don't particularly see the appeal of writing fanfiction for something that doesn't really have a story to it in the first place. (I suppose that [livejournal.com profile] yuletide does seriously muddle the whole definition of "fanfiction" thing pretty regularly, too.)

As always, I'm just seriously excited to see what everyone comes up with this year.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (I cannot express myself in words alone!)
(I did in fact watch The Search For Spock and The Voyage Home this week, but I'm totally taking a break from Trek movies now. Yep.)

Oh geez, holiday madness is truly upon us. [livejournal.com profile] yuletide has its brainstorming post up; I've stuck my hastily cobbled-together list of possibilities here. (I haven't even seen Whip It! yet, but I'm going to be pretty shocked if I don't want to slash it.)

I've been waffling for the last week or so about [livejournal.com profile] st_santa . . . I dropped [livejournal.com profile] go_exchange this year to avoid overload, but Star Trek! I mean, it's one of the most popular offers/requests at [livejournal.com profile] yuletart this year, naturally, buuut. Hrm. On the other hand, that's looking kind of tiny.

Also I was thinking about trying to put together a general holiday card for the first time in a few years . . . would people be interested in that?

Did I mention I'm moving a week from tomorrow? Ahaha. /o\
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (yuletide - holiday exchanges - stress)
Running around like a chicken with my head cut off, here.

So I'm off tomorrow; my parents and I are flying to Frankfurt (weather allowing, yikes) and taking a bus from there to reach my brother in Strasbourg. We'll be staying there over Christmas, heading to Paris through New Year's, and then Evan and I will head to London for another four and a half days. My family's first proper vacation ever, probably.

Anyway, so I was hoping to have a pretty holiday card for you all, but this month has been completely nuts, and I just haven't pulled it off. I will make it up to you artistically in the new year, promise. ♥

I most likely will have little to no internet access between now and January 6, so . . . here's wishing all of you a really fabulous holiday season. I love you guys; I've had a really difficult, transitional year, but you have been one of the brightest spots in it.

To my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide and [livejournal.com profile] go_exchange santa/goat type people . . . I may not get to thank you for your gifts until I get back, but please don't worry; I will. I really appreciate all the work you've put in (and my [livejournal.com profile] yuletart artist as well, of course).

See you all in the new year!
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (hard at work - drawing - garry)
Stil so ridiculously busy, at work and out of it. At this rate I will probably be reading Staring Through The Demons in January. :( Well, I'm likely to need it at that point (admissions hell and all).

My [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic is moving forward, thank goodness, though I kind of took a break tonight to clean our filthy living room. (Much better.) Also in exciting holiday news, [livejournal.com profile] yuletart started posting today! FAVORITE. :DDDD Highlights so far include this amusing seasonal Buffy piece and Labyrinth fanart that BLOWS ME AWAY. Also there's a very pretty rendering of movie-verse Tony Stark and some cute frolicking Pokemon . . . and eighty-eight pieces of multifandom fanart left to go. Hot damn.

Flist, I don't know those of you who are Avatar fans have heard about the movie casting controversy? The four major roles in the film--Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko--have apparently been given to unknown white actors (one of whom is a teen pop musician I've never heard of). If you think there's something deeply, painfully wrong about all this . . . well, I couldn't agree more. I wish I had time for eloquence right now. [livejournal.com profile] glockgal has posted profusely on the topic recently (I can't even pick which post to link to). There is also a letter-writing campaign protesting the whitewashing, to be found here: [livejournal.com profile] aang_aint_white. I definitely plan to join in.

Hrm. I should go sleep so I'm alert enough to answer applicant questions and jot down bits of fic all day tomorrow. At least I seem to have secured a place to sleep during those four nights in London.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (pretty villainy - out of costume)
Whee. I finished my [livejournal.com profile] yuletart (and I'm pretty happy with it, too - can't wait to show you guys), so . . . now it's on to [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. And some kind of holiday card for everyone, even if it's only digital.

In spite of all the stress and endless to-do lists, I really do love this time of year. Even just on a visual level, to put it simply: I love sparkly things. Walking home nights surrounded by holiday light displays puts an extra spring in my step, and makes me want to sit up and draw all night long (which is probably why I'm so tired today). Now, if only it would snow.

Speaking of sparkly things, I took a break from all the cooking and drawing I did this weekend to go see this movie with [livejournal.com profile] hermionesviolin. (Thanks for the heads' up, [livejournal.com profile] phineasjones! ♥ I hope you get a chance too.) Fandom really ought to have a look at this: it's a gay fantasy musical . . . oh yeah, and it's full of Shakespeare. It's silly as all hell, but there is glitter and boykissing and pretty (if often lulzy) choreography, and of course, plenty of quoting and paraphrasing (and singing) the Bard. Might have to try and track it down on DVD.

Meanwhile, I don't think I dislike a single song on this album. There are a few where I think "ehhh, that's not so great," and then there's some particular line or musical passage that fills me with joy. Can't pick a favorite yet, either (though this song's definitely up there). I love all Fall Out Boys (and the guests aren't bad either).

Speaking also of warm fuzzies, here's my thread in the holiday anon love meme. I've never done one before, but you know, might as well try it. :)
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (the drama - the horror - EMOTE)
Here I am entering holiday crisis mode, so busy that I can't even read the sequel to my favorite fic ever for real ([livejournal.com profile] bexless's priest!Gerard series, of course) until I get some things done. So I'm trying to avoid the internet just a little, but some people are THWARTING me.

Jabba Glob and Toro snowblowers and Frank's thoughts on Gerard (robots?). I may die. SHUT YOUR PRECIOUS FUCKING FACES, MCR, I have work to do that does not involve drawing any of you right now. ♥

[ETA:] "- everyone’s gonna have kids out on the road and their wives and stuff, it’s just going to be like a touring family circus."
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (Default)
I'm having a difficult time with my [livejournal.com profile] yuletart assignment; I'm really pleased with the fandom, etc, but having brainstorming issues. I think I might make a locked post later asking for prompting . . . in fact, I might go back to using a filter for talking about the details of my various holiday exchange projects. Is there anyone who would want to be left off that? I don't know if anyone is actually invested in being surprised/unspoiled about their flisters' exchange contributions (personally, I'm sort of fond of sneak peeks), but just in case.

Speaking of my flist, there's nothing like internet drama to take your mind off the real thing. Ugh, I'm so sorry, guys. No matter how bitchy bandflesh could be sometimes, I'm deeply unimpressed that someone put in that much effort to prove that s/he could do (much) worse.

The first comic I drew in almost a year was inspired by bandflesh.

reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (ve vant to suck your blood?)
Oh internets, I miss you. :( My entire October has been taken up by multiple out-of-town visitors (mostly wonderful, but tiring) or work being inexplicably completely insane, and now I have to spend my weekend catching up on readings and doing my take-home midterm. Boo.

I have been listening to Razia's Shadow almost constantly this week; I'm kind of tempted to do a big meta post discussing the story, its flaws, and its influences (hello, Jesus Christ Superstar and twisty Biblical resonances in general, no wonder I'm so mesmerized). Really have a lot of other things to be doing instead.

If you're at all curious, though, Razia's Shadow is a weird, off-kilter fantasy musical in two parts. Like most concept albums I've heard, it's fascinating but not entirely consistent (there are storytelling problems). I've uploaded the album here. (There's more info, including complete lyrics, over at [livejournal.com profile] razias_oracle.)

Aside from that, I'm being horribly obsessive over the election, so that can't be over soon enough. And along with homework this weekend, I'm going to sit down and try to work out my [livejournal.com profile] go_exchange and [livejournal.com profile] yuletart submissions. Might come to you guys for input? I need to get cracking, [livejournal.com profile] yuletide nominations are about to end, which means sign-ups soon! Also, because last weekend, I bought plane tickets! I am spending Christmas in Strasbourg (where my brother is doing his year abroad), and definitely visiting London before flying back the second week of January. (Equal parts stress and excitement! Whee.)

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, my lovelies (and HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FRANK IERO ♥). I am sitting at my desk dressed as girl!Harry Potter (never trust a Weasley with a hand-labeled bottle of potion), the only costume I could compose out of the contents of my apartment (since my actual costumey stuff is all on the other side of the state; FAIL). No parties for me, though (or I'd have made more of an effort, yeesh); I'll be spending the evening reading the Bible and making response paper outlines. :p Clearly, next year will have to be an EXTRAVAGANZA.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (yuletide - holiday exchanges - squeee)
I have received my [livejournal.com profile] yuletart assignment! :D It will probably be something of a challenge, but I'm also quite excited about it (naturally).

If my own assigned artist wanders by here . . . I think I probably gave you more prompting than you really need already, so I'm not gonna write out anything long. Just: have fun with it! Please! Feel free to poke through my journal if you want to (there's some squee around for various of my fandoms, some more than others), but there is also no need. I can't wait to see what you come up with, and thank you so much in advance. ♥

So that's two out of three assignments (and [livejournal.com profile] yuletide's won't arrive for a couple of weeks yet). I went through my new daily planner (had to get one for work; a good suggestion, I used the hell out of these things in school), marking off "x weeks until y deadline" at the top of every Monday through mid-December. It's going to be a stimulating season, to say the least.

Actually, I think I may be mostly skipping Halloween this year. Sadness, it's true, but I'm oddly okay with the idea . . . much as it's one of my favorite holidays, I didn't really have any brilliant ideas this year, and none of my friends seem to be having their own parties. And I have so much to do, with visitors this weekend and all last week, I could probably use some time to breathe and get a few things done.

My dad sent me this customizable video that's going around; it's a fake future news video about McCain winning the election thanks to one lazy non-voter, [insert your name here]. Dad. >:( I guess he thought it was clever, because he can't have imagined there's any chance I won't vote. I just emailed him and my mother yesterday with that article about disenfranchisement from Rolling Stone.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (I cannot express myself in words alone!)
So far, this work week has been completely maddening. I only took two days off last week; that should not have been enough time for everything to go to hell in a handbasket! Argh.

Fortunately, there is Gerard Way, whose hair is giving me flashbacks to my early days of comic readership. Also, you know, HIS FACE. I cannot deal with it.

In other fabulous news, [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fandom nominations are finally open! :D: So excited, so very panicked. (Seriously, if the holidays do not kill me this year, it's going to be pretty miraculous. Three exchanges and maybe a trip to Europe and probably having to write my research paper a month early--right when the exchanges are due! What am I doing oh god.)

I'm waffling a bit on my noms this year. ) I guess I'll hold off for a little while and ponder.

While I'm pondering, I suppose I should get back to work. There is much to do . . . plus unexpected fire drills!
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (spotlight - recommended - lookee)
I made some new friends this weekend, and they? Have a cat named D'Argo. ♥ I haven't watched any Farscape in ages.

Holiday exchange wackiness all around! [livejournal.com profile] yuletart sign-ups are live, OMG. (If you're at all curious about what I requested/offered, the comments are public.) I am very glad that they moved the deadline earlier this year. I kind of ran out of steam by the time I got to it last year, which was a shame, because I kind of think it's the best idea ever. MULTIFANDOM FANART EXCHANGE, YOU GUYS. Seriously. :DDD

Also, [livejournal.com profile] yuletide brainstorming has been going on over here! I have some preliminary thoughts: )

I just found out that my final paper is due about three days after I return from Europe (assuming that works out). Which means I'd better finish it before Christmas. Ahaha oh god, this year. That's what decided me on the Avatar slash exchange (maybe if there's another one later, I really want to, but).

All this fuss, and it's the first of October. I haven't got my costume together yet! /o\ Need to go shopping.

And, randomly: this is seriously bizarre. (Not at all the same thing, but it reminds me of that hilarious "Grayson" trailer that used to be on youtube. I wonder if that's still around.)
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (I cannot express myself in words alone!)
Oh, thank you, hometown radio station. This song will never again make me think of anything but Saved!. Not that it's really a bad thing.

Life suddenly looks ridiculously busy for the foreseeable future. October is full of visiting friends, not to mention Halloween. (I need to come up with a jack'o'lantern design! Also, I am now considering going as Wendy Watson. Maybe I can have multiple costumes.) November will have the election (WAUGH), any number of exciting new media releases. (Folie A Deux! Umbrella Academy! And, as I discovered on a routine check of the Oni Press website . . . new Blue Monday. Finally. :D), and Amanda Palmer. ♥ December has holiday exchanges galore, and also hopefully a trip to Europe to see the little brother, [livejournal.com profile] olivia_circe, and maybe [livejournal.com profile] sweetvalleyslut.

I really have to resist joining in on [livejournal.com profile] atla_slash_swap, don't I. :( Oh god, I'm so tempted. There isn't nearly enough Avatar slash around. (It's not a holiday exchange, but I have to get everything done early somehow if I'm flying to Strasbourg on December 22.)

Speaking of holiday exchanges, [livejournal.com profile] yuletart nominations end Monday, so if there are any fanartists out there who might want to contribute, get going! And there are finally signs of life from [livejournal.com profile] yuletide (I was getting a little worried). Cue sudden (and oddly unexpected, even after all this time) floods of excitement. I need to be much more conservative in my offerings this year, hmmm. And what should I ask for? I'm thinking The Middleman, although I don't know what characters/pairing (I would like to see some Wendy/Lacey, of course, but I'm oddly compelled by Middleman/Lacey, and honestly I could go for some gen).

And I'm babbling already. Life's . . . not as productive as it should be right now (hello, steps toward networking that I'm avoiding, original comics that I'm not drawing), but it's really fun. The I Don't Care video is amaaazing and would probably deserve a post of its own if I had the time. (Nuns! Naked Joe! Gabe! Alarming ending! Paaaatrick. ♥ Tiny Pete is tiny! I know that's nothing new, but still!) Also I'm on a steampunk kick thanks to [livejournal.com profile] _audrey and [livejournal.com profile] blondiusmaximus (see amazing fanart), just reread the entire Girl Genius archive, and keep doodling steampunk versions of old original characters. I've been working on [livejournal.com profile] intensityboat merch (coming soon to a cafepress near you). And work's kind of crazy right now, too.

Ahaha, yeah. Things are definitely going to get noticeably more multifannish around here for awhile, though there are definitely bits of bandom fanart in the works as well.
