Oh man. I watched The Wrath of Khan for the first time (twice) this week, and I just keep thinking "I hate it when villains quote Shakespeare" and chuckling to myself. I really want to watch Farscape again, right now. (It doesn't hurt that reboot!Kirk's characterization reminds me of John Crichton more than Shatner.)

Apart from that, I've been watching a bunch of TV. I caught up with Leverage long since and have been making my way through various peoples' bookmarks (I can see that this is going to be another deserving fandom that's tragically short of fic, but at least that means [livejournal.com profile] yuletide - I might actually make two requests in one fandom this year). Eastwick is ridiculously entertaining, though I'm a little terrified that it'll go south suddenly. (That choice of phrasing was actually not on purpose, but now I kind of have to leave it.) Merlin continues to be bad but endearing, and I actually should write a little more about various developments if I ever remember. And well, there's Dollhouse. I watched the unaired first season episode back-to-back with the second season premiere, and I don't even know. Still can't look away.

I would really like to go see Amanda Palmer play with the Boston Pops on New Years Eve, but damn, those are some pricy tickets. I might pay that much to see Bowie, but that's about it. :(

Lastly, [livejournal.com profile] yuletart sign-ups end in three days!
Kirk says sign up!

Errrr. I don't know, I've been looking for any excuse to try drawing them, and this was a quick first attempt? (So much more Uhura later. And er, all-around better, I hope.) I'm ridiculous. And excited. :D

And I should really go to bed. I'm even worse at that than usual, lately.

Oh man, for a Monday today has been pretty great. (Well, yesterday as of six minutes ago, whoops.) Slept badly but managed to be alert anyway, and then after work I got to hang out with [livejournal.com profile] omnia_mutantur, play with her kitties, and bond with her houseguest over growing up Marvel (unlike all the folks we know, who mostly grew up DC). Plus, Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist is kind of an adorable movie.

Came home to find a new interview with Gerard about comics. (Do not read if you are not caught up on The Umbrella Academy: Dallas!) Oh man. *_* I am so tantalized with all the bits of future series he mentions. And who is he co-writing this new non-TUA series yet? (My money's on Mikey, I think?) Also, I'm kind of disappointed that he won't be drawing it himself (I really would love to see him draw a comic sometime, even just a one-shot), but Becky Cloonan is pretty amazing, sooo. COMICS. :D

My BBB art is going really well, and I really want to sit up late and keep working on it! Plus I think I finally have some thoughts on the supporting cast for my original comic project. Why is sleep debt? >:(

[ETA:] Kath linked me to this Dollhouse vid, set to "It Depends On What You Pay" from The Fantasticks. If you know anything about the play (I know very little, but) you may guess why the song's so appropriate for the material. Proceed with caution; two disturbing tastes that taste disturbing together.

I, um. Huh.

I don't really know what to think? I mean, I miss Joss' shows, all three of them, and Eliza Dushku played my favorite role out of all of 'em. I've missed her. My first reaction was Joss + Eliza = SQUEE!

Not sure what I think about the concept, though. After all my irritation with bad female characterization . . . Dushku's character in "Dollhouse" sounds dangerously like a woman with no personality. Maybe that would interest me if that didn't happen to a lot of female genre characters anyway, all the time; having an excuse for it wouldn't make it fresh, wouldn't make it any less frustrating.

I couldn't stomach a show that plays with a female character as, well, a doll, with that as its nifty psychological appeal. I'm sure the show will be about how horrible it is to play with people as dolls; but frankly, at this point? That's not enough. I wouldn't want a "dark" show like that right now, without the catharsis of seeing the woman break free of dollhood. If the show aims at giving Echo agency, as well as messing with the nature of identity, that could be great. Maybe. Otherwise, it'd just be too damn depressing, too metaphorically close to home.

The trouble is, it's been awhile since I really trusted Joss to do a good job with problematic subject matter. Buffy gets hailed as a great feminist success, but it had a lot of problems, and this one doesn't sound like any sort of guaranteed improvement. (People talk about Joss writing great female characters, but all I have to do is think about Fred from Angel, and I'm really worried.)

sometimes she will be completely elegant, completely naive, completely helpless.
Is it me, or are there alarm bells ringing somewhere?

I guess I'll just have to see. I wish he'd drop some of his comic commitments, anyway, because gods know he's pretty much proved himself incapable of juggling too many projects at once.

I hope I'm just being paranoid and jaded, and that this show will turn out to be filled with squee after all. (Would you believe me if I said that I still consider myself to be a Joss Whedon fan? I mean, I watch/read/at least partly enjoy just about everything he works on. I dunno.)
