Happy spring, flist! It's not quite warm out yet, but it's getting there, and I saw my first local crocuses today. ♥ I feel so much better; I never realize quite how cranky winter was making me until it starts going away.

I was planning on writing some kind of big, thorough Watchmen review, but I can't seem to get into it, so nevermind. :) Basically, I would have done the whole feel of the film differently (grittier, more visceral violence rather than Matrix-style special effects; I thought the shiny was all wrong for the story even though I was expecting it). For what it was, it did a decent job, but I realized that . . . I didn't really want there to be a Watchmen movie, after all. I don't think we need to make movies out of every good book; it didn't bring anything new to the story, and it took all kinds of things away.

I did love the opening credits, though. *_* And there were other bits and pieces, but probably not enough to make me want to watch it again.

Speaking of comics, I just dumped most of the superhero titles off my pull list (except for Runaways and Wonder Woman, I think). I've just gotten bored with most of the stories they're telling these days, they seem more and more generic. :/ I need some new stuff to read, too; a lot of my indie titles come out very irregularly. I haven't had anything new the last two Wednesdays in a row, which makes me sad.

Fanart things have been really stalled lately (while I draw really lame autobiographical nonsense, no less), but I am determined to jumpstart that this weekend. I have been listening to TBP nonstop for the last few days, and getting ridiculously excited about BBB ([livejournal.com profile] jjtaylor will keep on tantalizing me). And Pete's fourth wall shenanigans! I can't believe I've already been in this fandom for almost a year; I love it so much. ♥

001. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
002. I will respond by asking you ANY five questions of a very intimate and creepily personal nature. Or not so creepy/personal.
003. You WILL update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
004. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
005. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

Some answers to mostly art-related questions )

It was pretty fucking awesome to hear "Desolation Row" played on the big movie speakers like that. I had trouble not rocking out in the middle of the theater, even while I was still trying to, you know, process.

As for the Watchmen movie itself, I was left feeling much more critical than fannish (though obviously, some of that was just really cool). There were plenty of parts that I liked a lot--more the little moments and details--and all the way through I was engaged, interested to see how the next bit of story was worked out onscreen. It was fun. On the whole, though, I wasn't thrilled with the film.

Ah well. I'm actually pretty satisfied with the book, you know? Seeing it "brought to life" is a bonus.

I should collapse, this is only the start of what promises to be a pretty kickass weekend.

Okay, so Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull wasn't exactly the best movie I've ever seen. There are various criticisms to offer (along with some definite moments of squee), but there's only one thing I really want to say: how many action movies are there in which you get to see a 57-year-old-woman kick that much ass?

*crickets chirp*

That's what I thought. I fucking love Karen Allen. ♥

Speaking of things I love? I think I may be adding Robin to my comics pull for the first time ever. It's not that recent events weren't more or less expected, but OMG better than I could have even imagined! ♥ (This consoled me over the fact that there were no issues of the new Emily the Strange to be had at MYP or two Newbury Comics. Someone must have told the fangirls about Gerard's interview.)

Am gearing up for a weekend full of [livejournal.com profile] sweetvalleyslut (and a little bit of [livejournal.com profile] omnia_mutantur as well, huzzah). Neil Gaiman, Henry Jenkins, Life on the Murder Scene, thrift-shopping, swan boats, geek movies (Prince Caspian or Iron Man?), probable loud discussions of fandom in public, being incomprehensible to just about any and all passerby . . . \o/

I just have to remember not to wear the MIKEY FUCKIN WAY shirt to the swanboats. ^^; I got enough deathglares from parents with small children last weekend (I totally forgot that it was the Sunday of graduations in Boston as well as in the Valley).

I am back. Totally fucking exhausted and emotionally a bit wrecked, but so happy underneath that.

Amazing does not do My Chemical Romance justice. Also, I love fangirls.

I want to write about yesterday in detail, but I should do it tomorrow because I need to eat and sleep, right now. (I would like to have enough energy for the Hushies & Panic!)

I have to share this before I sleep, however: an interview of Gerard Way, in comic form, by Emily the Strange. (Oh fuck, I love him so much.)

Emotionally wrung-out as I am right now, it might have made me cry--two-year fucking hiatus--except that it reminded me of how excited I am for more of Gerard's comics. \o/

Right. Bed!

[livejournal.com profile] comica_obscura assignments are out! Mine's quite doable, I think. I won't be able to start work on it right away, but it's something to look forward to.

So, in case my lovely writer happens by: a letter for you. )

[livejournal.com profile] thete1 made a post over here which very much expresses something that's been on my mind lately, about being a (mainstream superhero) comics fan. She's looking at it in the context of DC's Infinite Crisis/One Year Later implosion, while I usually look at it through my Marvel lense, but nevertheless it's interesting: picking and choosing your comics canon. The comments add to it as well (though I wasn't feeling very articulate when I left mine, clearly ^^;).

I've been itching to draw comic fanart, again. It's so not going to happen, not with the month of doom I'm facing. Maybe I'll scan some of my messy sketchbook doodles--all I've had time for lately. (Phoenix took over my notebook today. It's been known to happen.)

At least I'll be able to plot for my [livejournal.com profile] comica_obscura fic during study breaks.

ZOMG excited. The [livejournal.com profile] comica_obscura challenge is finally starting!

Comic fanfiction exchange! )

By the way, if my own lovely writer happens to pass this way: femslash is encouraged; smut is always welcome, as is deep introspection; I'm kind of allergic to character death. Also, I'm very, very grateful. In advance. ;)

I'm going to start using this journal more, soon. I mean it. (And I'm going to buy a paid account for it, because I'm an icon whore.)
