reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (lazing - hanging out)
I had a really fantastic time seeing my band last weekend with a whole group of really lovely fangirls. In fact, life has been pretty amazing lately ... I've been making so much art, and I've been accepted to grad school for the fall! :) Unfortunately, I clearly overdid it, so now I'm laid up with a really sneaky cold. Can't bring myself to do much except draw (so hey, it could be worse).

[livejournal.com profile] yuletart posting started this week, and there's already some deeply amazing work up in a whole bunch of fandoms! Check it out, and see if you can spot my contribution when it goes up. ;)

In spite of all this, I can't really process that it's already a week into December ... maybe listening to holiday music will help?

[ETA:] Oh, say ... does anyone know where I might find good caps for the SING music video? :D?
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (hard at work - drawing - garry)
Ack, so I realize there are a lot of people I really need to get back to about various things. I'm sorry, guys: I'm buried under a pile of comic pages I'm trying to complete for a July 1st deadline, and well, I'm not sure I'm going to make it. /o\ Stupid over-complicated inking style. The only things I'm looking up for at this point are work, food, sleep, and trying to finish writing up a post about boycotting The Last Airbender on the bus. (Please boycott The Last Airbender. Some elaboration coming, hopefully ASAP.)

Hopefully I'll emerge by the weekend! I'd also like to gush a bit about Leverage, the Doctor Who finale, and how I've finally caught the genuine urge to watch all of Star Trek: The Next Generation in order. (Erm, side note: I don't suppose anyone has some good Picard/Q recs? For after I finish the comic, you understand.)

reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (retcons - comics are on crack)
So it looks like the AO3 is getting ready to work on hosting fanart/non-fic fanworks! They are soliciting ideas from fanartists right now. :D I can't even begin to tell you guys how excited I am about this! I've never really had the opportunity to host my fanart in a really fandom-centric place, you know? Much less a place as thoughtfully designed as the AO3.

In other news, I have a serious superhero craving right now. It's taking a lot of effort not to head the two blocks to my local comic shop and spend money, but I am also trying to budget myself much more carefully these days. (This will probably end in tears. Or rereading old Smallville fic.)
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (alleluia - religion obsession)
Oh hey! I keep meaning to write a post and then not doing it, so this might be a little ridiculous.

IDK, real life has been ... not totally nutty, but work's been pretty tiring and busy (there was an accepted student open house, and my boss was out a whole lot). Also, there was even more rain (record amounts and lots of flooding, whee), and before that, there were beekeepers nosing around in my ceiling! Who did not actually find any bees (apparently the hive up and moved sometime in February/early March? there weren't even that many dead ones left), but we did find about 120 pounds of honey. (Eventually, this will make a good comic.) Also, I turned 26.

I've been trying to focus on my original comic work (as usual), with less than desired success, but I haven't been very consistently fannish either. A little while back there was this Gerard Way video, which provoked the usual WHAT IS HIS FACE reaction from me (it had been awhile, too!), and also Mikeyway was adorable. I miss them, but I'm trying not to dwell on MCR too much until we actually have a release date for that album. Whateverthefuck it's going to be, now.

Recently, I've found myself reading lots of DC comics; mostly Bat-books. (I find the current lack of Bruce Wayne weirdly approachable, or something?) While my comic reading habits are often pretty separate from my online fannish pursuits, I checked out Close To Home by [livejournal.com profile] iesika (which I really enjoyed), and now I find myself right back in a Tim/Kon sort of place. (Not that I wasn't already feeling it.) Does anyone happen to have some favorite recs to throw at me? They can totally be old; I was really haphazard about reading in the fandom when I was doing that actively, a few years back.

On the other hand, just as I was getting comfortable, there comes this news. Goddammit, Rucka. ;_; I was looking forward to more of your Batwoman SO MUCH. I really hope she gets picked up by someone who can write and who really gets her, but . . . well, it's DC. IDEK. :(((((

In happier news, I watched the new Doctor Who episode last night, and I pretty much enjoyed it! Spoilers here. )

I should wrap this ridiculous post up, but! On Friday [personal profile] oliviacirce posted Wordsworth's daffodil poem. While I've never really spent any time on the Romantics, that inevitably winds up reminding me of Philip "deprivation is for me what daffodils were for Wordsworth" Larkin, so I promised I'd post something of his.

A serious house on serious earth it is )

That was a lot more talking than I meant to do! I should try to post more often, so I don't post quite so much. Oh, and I did manage to miss it, but I hope everyone who observes had a lovely Passover or Easter, while I'm on the topic. ♥
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (ella ella eh eh eh)
Oh my god, it stopped raining! \o/ Seriously, you guys, I don't mind daylight savings most of the time (I'd much rather wake up in the dark, if it means getting an extra hour of sunshine after work), but having it happen in the midst of four days' steady downpour is just playing dirty. Can't wait to finally enjoy that sunlight this evening, while I run around my apartment trying to prepare for the beekeepers.

Tomorrow: holes knocked in my bedroom ceiling! Vacuuming up honeybees! Most exciting. Cross your fingers for me that it'll work? If they're in among the bricks instead of the crawlspace, we might be forced to exterminate after all. (Which, apart from the fact that killing bees is a shame, would entail potential habitability issues that I'm not sure how to deal with. :/)

Okay, so there's a lot of buzz (err), both positive and negative, about Dreamwidth again. You may notice the little automatic message at the bottom of this post; I've been crossposting for months now, but I've decided I'd like to make that a little more obvious. I have no plans to ever turn off LJ commenting! I prefer Dreamwidth on a whole number of levels, but I get that plenty of you don't, and I have no intention of trying to pressure anyone into switching. That said, I consider Dreamwidth my primary location now; I'm working on taking all crossposters off my LJ default filter and all that jazz, and if you don't mind commenting at DW (either with your own account or OpenID), that would be neat.

I have to get back to work, but: [livejournal.com profile] trekreversebang writer/artist match-ups have been announced, and you should go check out the totally tantalizing thumbnails of the art submissions (so far). :D I have to go email my writer! Can't wait to see how this all turns out.

Also, you might want to check out [livejournal.com profile] coc_m_madness (Characters of Color March Madness, multifandom character voting modeled on [livejournal.com profile] f_march_madness). It is painful. I just had to pick between Zoe Washburn and Gunn! And Charlie Young and Wallace Fennell!

Lastly! Gold Motel just announced East Coast tour dates on their myspace, including one for Allston. Yes, Greta, come to meeeee. *_*
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (uhura says hell no - calling you on it)
In case you missed it, one of my favorite and most admired performers has not only been participating in a blatantly exploitative, ableist album/project, but she's also retreated into rationalization and non-apologies instead of dealing with peoples' criticisms (with a healthy side of passive aggression). I . . . really don't have the energy to say anything useful, particularly after inadvisably wading into the comments on her latest blog post with both fists. [community profile] linkspam naturally has a round-up (including Amanda's blog posts, and good non-LJ/DW responses) here and here.

Quick paragraph of self-indulgent fangirl grief. )

Ugh. Anyway, on a brighter note, my landlady called me pretty early this morning, in response to the lengthy email I sent her about honeybees and the complicated process of removing them. She's calling in a beekeeper and everything, and has actually made an appointment for assessment (for next week). We haven't discussed what's going to happen about the construction that'll be necessary, but the actual removal can't take place until probably April-ish, so there's time.

Also, LEVERAGE IS AMAZING. My heart, you guys.

So, any exciting weekend plans? I have to make this an art-working weekend, for the most part. (At least I finally know what I'm doing for [livejournal.com profile] trekreversebang? /o\) That (informal) portfolio review is coming up soon, meeeep.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (totes genius - problem-solving)
I've become embroiled in an attempt to stop my landlady from exterminating the beehive which currently resides in our wall. We need to get the bees out--ever since it got cold, they've been making their way inside, which is an unhealthy situation all around--but my roomie and I would like to see them relocated alive. :( Bees are important! None of the keepers I've contacted today picked up the phone, so I've left lots of messages . . . it looks like this is going to be messy no matter what happens, ugh.

Also, how is it mid-February already? DDDD: There's so much I have to get done by the end of the month! Thank goodness it's a three-day weekend, anyway. Gah.

On a more fannish note, I wound up watching the new Sherlock Holmes movie yesterday; I enjoyed it, but I'm a little puzzled. )

White Collar continues to be just like fanfiction, which is entertaining! Also, I am really excited about this news (season 2 casting spoilers!). Leverage remains my favorite thing on TV right now, though - I need to watch this week's tonight. I've just caught up on Being Human, too, and Annie has been particularly awesome lately, although I'm a little irked by one recent development. )

Hey, has anyone been watching Caprica? Is it worth checking out?
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (crack - confusion - totes Batman)
[livejournal.com profile] yuletide signal boost, since I know some folks on my flist were thinking about pinch-hitting: there was a problem with Yahoogroups and now you have to contact a different email address if you want to claim one of the pinch-hits that have already been sent out. (Not sure yet how the rest are going out.)

I got my story uploaded with about two hours to spare, and headed into the Square for what was meant to be a brief celebratory dinner with comics-boy. And two and a half hours later, realized that I'd totally lost my entire evening. /o\ I needed a break, but the next two days are going to be a frantic whirl of wrapping, packing, mixing, drawing, and sending out belated cards, so um. I'm probably going to be scarce, online and off.

Also, I bought myself a brand new pair of combat boots (to replace the six-year-old pair that were very slowly starting to fall off my feet). I'm trying to be cautious/slow about breaking them in, but my ankles are kind of on fire right now. Still happy, though!

[ETA:] There's a new back-up pinch-hit mailing list for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide!
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (delighted grin - aw thanks)
My [livejournal.com profile] yuletide story is going agonizingly slowly . . . so per as usual, then! I know what's happening all the way through, thank god, but that doesn't make it easy to put my thoughts on the page. Seriously, these word things are frustrating! Writing with pictures (or preferably a combination) is so much easier. :/

But but but! [livejournal.com profile] yuletart has been delighting me throughout, and now I have art of my very own! :DDD Check out the hilarious (and pretty!) AOS OT3 comic panel that somebody drew all for me. (I am maybe a little overexcited and sleep deprived. But seriously!) I love everything about it, from the classic presentation to Spock's hilarious (but totes logical) thought bubble. Oh man, I am so happy right now.

Back to work. But. :D
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (frog in my throat - for your own good)
I feel like I'm making some progress on this moving thing? Yesterday I finished getting my books, notebooks, sketchbooks, art supplies and DVDs all boxed up--so there's what? clothing, technology, and a daunting amount of random odds-and-ends left to go--and this morning I managed to get permits/reserved space for a van on both streets. It's all very surreal. This is really only my second move (not counting the times when I was doing it with my whole family, and not actually in charge).

On the other hand, my roommates are having exactly no luck locating a replacement for me, which is terrifying. I knew this was a risk, but I thought there'd be people looking. I was looking during this time of year, a couple years back. I made my bed and I'll lie in it, but. :/ If I'm stuck paying double rent for another month I won't be out on the street, but it'll certainly be a blow. (If any of you happen to know someone looking in the Boston area, please do feel free to send them my way!)

Bleurgh. Fortunately, fandom is lovely! I haven't been able to spend quite as much time obsessing over it as usual, but [livejournal.com profile] yuletide nominations are open! :D I have a lengthy list of potential offers that will need to be revised extensively once they're finished. But!

Random blather on nominations/requests. )

[ETA:] Oh hey, wait, they just made Leverage eligible. (And Sports Night!) Now I'm going to have to rethink everything. ;)

[ETA the second:] Someone nominated Janelle Monae's Metropolis: The Chase Suite! Song/album fandoms have really not interested me before this year, but damn, that is awesome.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (gimme fire - don't be stingy)
Oh fandom, I miss you. I've enjoyed all the comicky progress I've made lately, but still. And since I still don't have time or energy to do a proper post about much of anything right now, have the meme that's going around my flist.

Ask me a fandom, and I will tell you:

+ OTP
+ Runner-up
+ Honorable mention(s)
+ Crack pairing(s)
+ Ship everyone else seems to like, but I don't

(My disclaimer is similar to everyone else's: my 'OTPs' are not TO THE DEATH, they are just favorites. And usually flexible.) Any fandom you like; if I know it, I'll answer. :) Possibly in detail. I've been all tired and distracted lately . . . I'm finding it hard to just spontaneously write about stuff, but prompting tends to get me going.

I wish I had time to ask for art prompts, but I have so much stuff to finish already. /o\ I hope I get some of it together for this week.

Meanwhile, in IRL news: I got an awesome apartment! Moving is going to be weird and complicated, but. \o/
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (reaching out - whoa there - emphatic)
Oh man, so, life. Last week was et up with roommate search, and as soon as that was accomplished (it was stressful at the time, but in retrospect very fast), the heat descended. I've been staying the hell out of my apartment as much as possible ("hell" being the operative word). Boo. Hiss. I've still only heard one of MCR's new songs, I still haven't watched the What A Catch video . . . not to mention, sit down with my sketchbook for more than five minutes at a time. Fortunately, it seems to be cooling down a bit. Maybe I should reconsider this A/C thing next year.

I have not been doing much fandomy stuff lately - mostly I've been sitting around reading political blogs, actual books (Dorothy L. Sayers for vacation, and now I'm rereading Stoppard's The Invention of Love ♥), and comics of course. Mike Carey's new book, The Unwritten, is pretty awesome. So meta! *_* (Thanks for the rec, [livejournal.com profile] fuschia. :D) I want to buy the huuuge Locas II SO MUCH, OMG, but it is expensive! I have been spending way too much money on things like #LOFNOTC shirts and Middleman DVDs.

Also, I've been attempting to slog through this tiny little fannish-injoke-nostalgia comic strip for [livejournal.com profile] sweetvalleyslut (seriously, it's eight panels; WHAT IS THE DEAL), but I seem to be in rut-land. (Hence having to drop out of [livejournal.com profile] bandgirlsbang. :(((( Which began posting today, check it out!) BUT. Here is the perfect (if early) bit of excitement to shake me out of that: [livejournal.com profile] yuletart is gearing up again! ♥

So hey, fanartists on my flist . . . if you haven't participated in this thing yet, you must check it out. It is AMAZING. I'm so excited; I am totally in the mood for multi/obscure fandom doings, and this year I should have time to pinch-hit! \o/ \o/ \o/
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (scrunchy face)
Hi, I'm back-ish. (Still at the parents' house for another day or two.) I had a lovely time in Maine, but now I'm involved in a messy last-minute housing scramble (I need either a new roommate, or a new place; neither of which is so very easy to locate when I'm not back in the city yet). Found out right before I left, so it's all a bit sudden, and I've had to drop out of [profile] bandgirlsbang. I feel awful about that. :(((

There were some nice bits, but all in all, I haven't quite achieved the hoped-for stress reduction. /o\ I will of course be fine, but I doubt I'll have a chance to catch up on fandom/flist for awhile yet.

Hope you're all well. ♥
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (pretty villainy - out of costume)
Oh hey, that was fast. I've posted Gwen/Morgana fanart (based on [livejournal.com profile] suaine's Gwen-centric An Exercise in Politics) at [livejournal.com profile] thelittlebang. Warning for battlefield aftermath (some blood, bruising; one dead body in the background, but very non-explicit).

It's amazing how badly I want to go see Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, even though I've barely given the franchise much thought in at least a year. I don't quite know what to do with my lack of [livejournal.com profile] asleepinabox and [livejournal.com profile] sweetvalleyslut. :(
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (hmph - I bet Lois Lane never says that)
I shoveled myself out and waded to the T first thing this morning, and somehow in spite of this weather I still managed to get to work early. Why are we not closed like most of the sane institutions around Boston today? And furthermore, why is it freezing cold in my office? I am all wet! >:(

Urgh. I had a fantastic weekend, though; I went home to the Valley and saw a [livejournal.com profile] guinsky and a [livejournal.com profile] fuschia (and I would have seen a [livejournal.com profile] book_of_calm if I were not apparently the most oblivious person ever; I am really sorry about that, bb). Also there was entertaining student opera, and introducing my parents to Slings and Arrows (which I've recently fallen in love with, myself).

Oh well, it is March! That is technically progress, even if it doesn't look like it right now. Maybe I will leave early today, if that is feasible at all, so I can curl up with my sketchbook and hot chocolate and enjoy some late winter coziness. (A mentor type figure once told me that winter is cartooning season.)
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (Default)
Work continues to be stressful and crazy, well past the point where I believed this crap would be done with, and I feel bad because it's somewhat hampering on a social level. I feel like a cavedweller a lot of the time lately; I don't see much of friends beyond my roomies (lovely though they are). However, we've scheduled the last admissions committee meeting for Friday the 20th, so that should be it. (Not a clean end; there's recruiting and open houses and all kinds of wrap-up, but that's all much more gradual.) AND there's a three-day weekend.

So I have a song meme to do at some point (with uploads!), but here I am being a little too lazy to pull out the pertinent cds, so here is a high school meme instead. )

Well, I'm sure that was fascinating. *g* Anyway, I also have this for you: little bit of artwork: Amanda Palmer & Greta Salpeter. )

I would try and wrap up this post, but my roomie went and Netflixed The Dark Knight and now I'm too distracted. ;)
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (hmph - I bet Lois Lane never says that)
Ooh, this day needs to end. I made a mess of my latest piece of fanart at lunchtime and I've spent the last three hours twitching because I can't fix it; at this rate I'm going to wind up trying to draw on the train.

Actually, if I could skip ahead a couple of weeks, that would be all-around lovely.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (scrunchy face)
Bleurgh, work is kicking my ass today. I am looking forward to mid-February, which is really pretty unusual.

On the other hand, Fall Out Boy touring with Cobra! :D Tuesday concerts in Lowell are not exactly the most convenient things, but I really can't see how I can miss this. (Last time they played there? I trekked around in the rain with [livejournal.com profile] sweetvalleyslut to pick up the ticket she got off [livejournal.com profile] 2damnoldforthis, and then that night she called from the commuter rail station asking for taxi numbers and google map directions. I thought she was nuts. :D)
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (hard at work - drawing - garry)
Stil so ridiculously busy, at work and out of it. At this rate I will probably be reading Staring Through The Demons in January. :( Well, I'm likely to need it at that point (admissions hell and all).

My [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic is moving forward, thank goodness, though I kind of took a break tonight to clean our filthy living room. (Much better.) Also in exciting holiday news, [livejournal.com profile] yuletart started posting today! FAVORITE. :DDDD Highlights so far include this amusing seasonal Buffy piece and Labyrinth fanart that BLOWS ME AWAY. Also there's a very pretty rendering of movie-verse Tony Stark and some cute frolicking Pokemon . . . and eighty-eight pieces of multifandom fanart left to go. Hot damn.

Flist, I don't know those of you who are Avatar fans have heard about the movie casting controversy? The four major roles in the film--Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko--have apparently been given to unknown white actors (one of whom is a teen pop musician I've never heard of). If you think there's something deeply, painfully wrong about all this . . . well, I couldn't agree more. I wish I had time for eloquence right now. [livejournal.com profile] glockgal has posted profusely on the topic recently (I can't even pick which post to link to). There is also a letter-writing campaign protesting the whitewashing, to be found here: [livejournal.com profile] aang_aint_white. I definitely plan to join in.

Hrm. I should go sleep so I'm alert enough to answer applicant questions and jot down bits of fic all day tomorrow. At least I seem to have secured a place to sleep during those four nights in London.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (boypile - snuggles - just too precious)
Yeah, so I'm up to my neck in inking and I have a second Thanksgiving dinner to finish food for, but . . . THIS ALBUM. I don't have a favorite song yet, I'm still processing (fifth listen in, I think? I don't know when I'm gonna be able to turn it off), but holy hot DAMN. I love this band's various albums for their own various quirks, but this one might be my favorite. Oh god, Patrick, your VOICE. (I still want bluesy duets with Greta someday. Please?)

[ETA:] Snark at Dubya in 20 Dollar Nose Bleed? LOL latest, Pete, but. ♥

[ETA2:] I still can't read Staring Through The Demons, and now everybody and her sainted aunt is doing fanart for it! (This is all so much to look forward to for after I finish my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. And motivation to get it done early. Yes. :((((((()
