Yesterday, I was sitting in a cafe drawing with [personal profile] ataratah when some excited tweets led to us looking at Brendon Urie in a thong ... which I only just now realize, I did nothing to shield the establishment's other patrons from. Um. I've missed fandom? Hi! I've been pretty busy visiting with old friends and dancing at the wedding of my former epic adolescent infatuation, but I need a little more internet time.

Speaking of NSFW imagery ... I have been working on something to share with you guys! Way back in March, [personal profile] glitteryv won a two-page fancomic, which I have finally completed. The following is a scene from her Due South/Down With Love fusion, DONE With Love:

'Fraser,' Ray interrupted, 'Sorry. I won't be able to make it. I'm all tied up.' (NSFW) )

Thanks again to [personal profile] glitteryv for your generous bid on [livejournal.com profile] help_japan!

I feel like my juices are finally flowing again after a good month of art slump (all that transition just doesn't do anything for me creatively). I am ready to make ALL THE COMICS ... very very soon. :D

Now I need to go try and get things set up with my electrical company from a state away, since my new roommate is moving into the apartment a week ahead of me.

Oh um, hi internet! /o\ I am kind of swamped these days. I've taken on a number of original comics projects for the summer (not to mention my grad school application). So it looks like I'm just going to have even less time for fandom stuff than usual. (Although, I say this five days before Leverage comes back, so IDK. Grain of salt.)

That said, the fabulous [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang story I drew for has gone live! Only Going One Way, by [personal profile] ataratah and [personal profile] jjtaylor, is a BANDOM/DUE SOUTH CROSSOVER. Yeah. :DDD It is fucking hilarious and cracked-out and amazing, and you should totally go check it out! Not only is the main pairing adorable, but these two have a real gift for writing great secondary characters as well - in both fandoms. (Buck Frobisher, omg. :DDD)

You can see my four illustrations on LJ or on DW. How could I possibly pass up the chance to draw Gerard Way in a Mountie uniform? I had so much fun with this, seriously. It was particularly appropriate, since I started working on it during the drive to/from Canada for my brother's graduation.

Of course, now I've done fanart of Fraser and Kowalski, but not Vecchio ... which means that at some point, I'll have to make time to rectify that. ;)

On a less gleeful note, you've probably all heard about the most recent, sickening bit of fandom racefail by now? But here's a rather belated signal boost, just in case, because I think it's important to be aware of shit like this. (Link goes to the most comprehensive round-up post of the debacle, by [livejournal.com profile] amazonziti.) In a nutshell: a SPN fan decided that the tragic (and ongoing) aftermath of the Haiti earthquake would make a great backdrop for her two white dudes to ~find themselves and have hot sex, piling on plenty of painful racist and imperialistic tropes along the way. Her betas, artist, cheerleaders, and quite a few commenters apparently agreed. Eurgh.

I'm sorry for both being so late and so brief on the matter ... I may try and get a post together later about some different instances of pop culture/fannish fail I've been encountering lately (much of it about race). I hope.

Dear Due South flisters, random question: can any of you recall whether they ever show the consulate kitchen in an episode? I'd imagine that if they do, it'll be during the third & fourth seasons, which I haven't watched quite as many times as the first & second.

Um, also, I am not dead! I've just been really bad at the internet lately. /o\ I will post later about various neat fannish things that I like, and also fanart (since I'm actually doing some now)! Right now, though, I am exhausted: my little brother graduated from his tiny Canadian university this weekend, and we've just finished driving all the way back down the coast. I was totally productive during the trip, New Brunswick is pretty, and I adore my brother; but, now I have to go curl up in a ball for awhile.

Some seriously shitty things have been happening IRL lately (not really to me, but to people I love); thank goodness for the distractions of the internet. There seems to have been a minor flare-up of two bandom-centric wanks (the warnings business and bandflesh). Funtimes! :| I don't really have anything to add, except a great big WORD to [personal profile] wistfuljane's post. ([personal profile] impertinence also has a worthwhile post on Anonymity and Livejournal.)

On the other hand, this has spawned a nifty post from [livejournal.com profile] iamtheenemy about fandom experience. A lot of people have been weighing in about their fannish history in the comments, which I find fascinating. *_* Mine's kind of pointlessly overcomplicated, but thinking about it reminded me of a conversation I was having with [livejournal.com profile] hermionesviolin awhile back, which was sort of hilarious.

I'd been musing over my ten-year fandom anniversary (I got into my first fandoms, Sailormoon and Labyrinth, during 9th grade; the 1998-99 school year), when something odd occurred to me. I also began the process of coming out (to myself, as well as to others) during that time, and it was also around then that I started drawing 'seriously.'

LOL NOSTALGIA )

Also tangential to the whole personal fan history thing: Star Trek is reminding me why I have always gotten into fandoms late, when there are already tons of recs and goodfic epics just waiting for me. My life, so hard.

If I can't find enough Kirk/Spock to satisfy the craving right now (I have an unusually strong case of OTP fever, ack), at least there is all kinds of Ray/Ray fic I can go back and read. It's a long story, but I just finally watched "Call Of The Wild" for the first time on Tuesday. (I laughed, I cried; I made noises only dogs could hear; I lol no'd bowling alleys. I am currently rereading [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl's Long Road (Long Ride Home) and it's even better now. ♥)

Oh, and lol latest, but: I'm really sorry about your band's split, Panic fans. :( I know I'd be devastated if it were MCR. I really hope that you keep enjoying your fic, bbs, and maybe even wind up with two great bands to love. ♥

I can't believe [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang is already over (and so is June, almost; dear gods). The second story I drew for was posted yesterday: cadenza (and so he confessed it to her) by [livejournal.com profile] beingothrwrldly. It's a Brendon/Greta romantic comedy musical-cast AU; lots of fun, and often funny. I've never drawn anyone from Panic before (Brendon has a particularly interesting face). :D You can find my piece here. (Both of the stories I signed up for this year were strongly concerned with a particular medium, and that really wound up influencing my contributions: a comic cover for the fic about comic writers, and a theatrical poster for the fic set around a Broadway production. So much color, though . . . totally taking a break from Photoshop now.)

There are so many BBBs I haven't even touched yet, I have no idea where to start! I've pretty much been sticking to MCR, but the output has been amazing in general. (Was there as much fic for non-Big Three bands last year? I can't remember. I mean, BBB was still overwhelmingly dominated by Panic and MCR, as expected, but. Still cool.) With all the rainy weather I kind of just want to curl up and read fic for the rest of the week. Alas, so much to do.

I watched a whole bunch of Season 3 Due South yesterday while drawing, and both of my roommates kept wandering by and commenting snarkily on RayK's accent. *g* Oh, this should have happened years ago so that I could gloat at [livejournal.com profile] sweetvalleyslut. It's too late now; I don't even notice anymore (and then I get defensive, so I'm well aware of who gets to do the gloating). Which is funny, because I really don't think I've watched most of these episodes since the first time (2004?); they're all familiar but I keep completely forgetting major plot points. (Roomies also laughed at me for singing along with Barrett's Privateers, but whatever. ♥)

I've been working on getting my recslists set up on Dreamwidth, whenever I take a break from drawing. (I think I've pretty much decided to take down my website, though I need to talk a bit more to B and Lam about that.) It's weird how much more self-conscious I am about my stupid commentary, posting here. (All private-d 'til it's done, though, so hopefully it'll be more presentable by then. Still incredibly random in places--what was I doing in HP fandom, visiting archives and then clicking on fic with my eyes closed?--but free of seventeen-year-old rambling.)
