reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (looking back - ancient history)
Sometimes when I take a vacation, I have the worst time getting back on the internet. Behind on everything, languishing correspondence, etc. I spent most of last week camping on a little island in Maine, and nearly all of it with [profile] sweetvalleyslut, who is now headed back across the Atlantic for another year. It was fantastic. (I'd pretty much like to spend the next week reading and sleeping, but you know. Doesn't work like that.)

I'll catch up slowly, but in the meantime! Two links. First of all, [personal profile] ratcreature is running a poll about fanart style preferences. (It asks you to rate a variety of styles, such as "realistic," cartoony, manips, etc.) This is something I'm always curious about! You should go take the poll. ;)

Also, it's the week after Vividcon and there are tons of new vids and recs floating around! I've barely made a dent, but I really have to post one rec of my own. See, for years now, I've been embroidering this one vid idea in my head. I was never going to make it--I definitely don't have the time or the inclination to learn how to vid--but I'd occasionally consider trying to beg or con someone else into making it. Except, as it turns out, I don't have to.

[livejournal.com profile] sisabet's Clark/Lex Bad Romance vid is pretty much everything I've ever wanted. It's made up of clips from Smallville, the Justice League cartoon, Superman Doomsday, Superman Returns, and all kinds of comic panels (including all my favorites from Lex Luthor: Man of Steel, oh my god ♥). The song choice is perfect, and I mean ... this sort of blended-canon DCU is still the fandom of my heart. Oh my god, I can't stop flailing. :DDD You should go watch it now; I need to go watch it again. Eeeeeee. :DDDD

Come on, my beloved grad school of choice: post your 2011 application guidelines already! I am slow, I want to get started.

On a vaguely related subject, I've been thinking a lot about race, inclusiveness, and clarity of visual representation in art/comics. I would welcome thoughts from other artists - or anyone else, for that matter (so long as you don't dismiss the importance of the subject, which I take seriously).

I should note from the start that while I'm going to begin with some broad background, this isn't really a comprehensive piece of social commentary - I'm interested in comparing notes from a creative perspective, and have been pondering how best to improve inclusiveness within my own work. (Criticism of my approach, as well as the content of the post, is definitely welcome. This is an area of privilege for me.)

On portraying characters of color in cartoons and comics. )

Ack, so I realize there are a lot of people I really need to get back to about various things. I'm sorry, guys: I'm buried under a pile of comic pages I'm trying to complete for a July 1st deadline, and well, I'm not sure I'm going to make it. /o\ Stupid over-complicated inking style. The only things I'm looking up for at this point are work, food, sleep, and trying to finish writing up a post about boycotting The Last Airbender on the bus. (Please boycott The Last Airbender. Some elaboration coming, hopefully ASAP.)

Hopefully I'll emerge by the weekend! I'd also like to gush a bit about Leverage, the Doctor Who finale, and how I've finally caught the genuine urge to watch all of Star Trek: The Next Generation in order. (Erm, side note: I don't suppose anyone has some good Picard/Q recs? For after I finish the comic, you understand.)

Whoops, forgot this. Guess I'll post again so it won't get buried (sorry for the spam)! I've decided to get rid of my website; I've been thinking about it for awhile, but it went down recently (I forgot to renew the domain name, whoops), and I decided to leave it. All the fanart on my DW/LJ is therefore not showing up! I am going to get a photobucket account and repost it all, but it'll take me awhile to do that and fix all the links. Sorry, guys; in the meantime, some of my stuff is up on deviantart.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (the direct approach - something there)
For the umpteenth time: coloring art is hard. Bleurgh. Trek fanart just doesn't seem to want to be b&w, though, so maybe this will force me to do better at it! (I'm pretty excited about my piece, anyway!)

On a related note: the author sign-ups for [livejournal.com profile] trekreversebang end today! There is still time to get in on the action! You too can write 6K of Star Trek fic based on someone's amazing fanart. (Can't wait to seeeeee, omg.)

I finally got around to watching the fifth and sixth TOS movies with my roommate recently. (How much do I love living with such a huge sci-fi geek, even if she's not a slasher? Although, I did discover that she wrote Vision of Escaflowne fic when she was a teenager. Ha.) The fifth was . . . well. Nobody was lying about that, although I rather enjoyed the shore leave stuff at the beginning. Undiscovered Country was certainly an improvement, and now I understand lots of fandom references better (this piece in particular). ;) I'm almost done with the original cast now, woe. I should watch the rest of TAS at some point.

I'm still re-watching Farscape, also, and just . . . holy shit. I didn't think I'd forgotten how much I love this show, but I guess I did, because wow. Also, "John Quixote" makes so much more sense if you've actually watched the whole series in order up to that point. ;)

I got my portfolio assembled last night, so now I'm just going to ignore it and focus on fandom until the weekend. Yeah.

Happy March? (Stop raining already?)

Say, artist-types, do you guys have any advice on portfolios (virtual or otherwise) for someone who's never been an art student?

The nontraditional cartooning program I plan to apply for is having an open house/portfolio review day in early March, and I'm trying to figure out what I should be showing them. A portfolio? What's that? )

Anyway, I'm rambling, but if any of you would share thoughts/experiences I'd appreciate it mightily. ♥ I am super excited about the event, and about finally getting to apply - I've been waiting for years! (Intentionally; I wanted to do some things first. But it was a little frustrating.)

So hey, how about that [livejournal.com profile] au_bigbang thing? It looks a little intimidating to me, but potentially really awesome too. (I know a couple of you are signed up, right?)

Has anyone watched the new Being Human yet? I need to get on that. (I did catch up on Dollhouse. And heard the "big" Buffy comic spoilers. Oh, what the hell, Joss.)
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (hard at work - drawing - garry)
I am pretty thoroughly submerged right now! I've been working on coloring my [livejournal.com profile] yuletart piece for days and there is so much more to do, which is kind of ridiculous. I'm not sure I've done such an elaborate coloring job (if still full of fudging and workarounds because I fail at Photoshop). . . ever. How does fandom always do this to me?

I really would like to finish it before I go home Wednesday evening, but that's looking more and more unlikely. /o\

Every time I surface briefly to glance at my flist, somebody has posted pictures of Adam Lambert kissing some dude. (Well, maybe that has just been today, since I guess he kissed the dude last night? But it feels like longer.) Ahaha, you guys. I am . . . not really taken with his music, for the most part (apart from the album title track, which is pretty spectacular), but your enthusiasm is endearing. Plus the shitty homophobic comments I stumble on elsewhere on the tubes almost make me wish I were more into him; I am kind of glad he exists, either way.

I'm only a little bit bitter that none of my fandoms has a David Bowie song challenge (so far as I know). :p

Anyway I'm behind on my un-canceled television (Merlin, White Collar) because I can only watch actual DVDs while I color (our player won't play my video files), and after I finish my drawing I have six pages of [livejournal.com profile] yuletide source notes to immerse myself in . . . so I guess I'll remain pretty absent for the holiday duration. However! The MCR publicity machine has started revving again, slowly, and I am pleasantly anticipatory for the coming year. :) Even though it will not contain a second season of Eastwick (was I the only one watching that, dammit? boo).

And whoops, I owe a couple of you holiday card exchange info. (Speaking of things I should really try to get done this week, and whee, more Photoshop. /o\)

I'm just a little bouncy and distracted at work today, waiting to leave early so I can head over to Lowell for my Believers Never Die show. :DDD

So I'm pondering something, and I could maybe use flister advice. I just paid off a rather large bill for the webspace I share with a couple of friends (we thought we'd set up automatic payments quite some time ago, but apparently it never took). We've shared the domain since high school, and I'm a little attached to it, but I'm starting to wonder if it's worth keeping.

Neither of my friends have updated their sites in a few years, and [livejournal.com profile] sweetvalleyslut is off in the Peace Corps now, so she won't touch hers anytime soon. I haven't updated in awhile either, really; I do use the sites to showcase my art, but I could probably do that just as easily from a blog of some kind? Easier, really. (I use deviantArt too, but I'm not exactly in love with it.)

Artists on my flist, what do you think? (Or, you know, anyone else. :)) Is it that important to have your own personal website? (Or I might think about getting one just for my original work at some point, and keep fanart to LJ/DW/DA. I'd still need to host the work somewhere - people seem to use Photobucket for that a lot?)
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (fortune - lure - I want money)
I have some reservations about the Decemberists' new album, but for the life of me, I have not been able to get "The Wanting Comes In Waves" out of my head since Saturday night.

So I'm thinking that I'd like to participate in Sweet Charity (not before time, as this is apparently my last chance). I've never signed up before because I'm kind of uncomfortable with the idea of doing commissions in general; I don't see myself as having the chops to do illustration I haven't specifically chosen myself. (Particularly since drawing romantic/sexy art can be really hit-or-miss for me, much as I wish otherwise.)

But, I had a brainwave! I could offer to make a short comic out of someone's drabble (or just a description, or even a script). That's more in my line, and something I've wanted to try again since doing that Eroica comic based on [livejournal.com profile] mosellegreen's ficlet. I'm thinking I'll limit it to My Chemical Romance (with optional Pete Wentz, Lyn-Z or Alicia, if my bidder wishes), since that's the fandom/band I feel most confident about right now.

I'm kind of stuck on what to put down for a minimum bid, though! I see a lot of people putting $1-$3, which seems low for the amount of time and effort I know I'd need to put in. Then again, I've never tried to put a price tag on my art, and this is for charity. (I'm kind of worried that this is too specialized or random an offer, anyway. :/ And I'm nervous about being able to live up to the expectations of a generous person who is actually willing to pay for my work!) Guess I'll sleep on it, as sign-ups are still going for a few more days.

Time to go ink to an episode of "Being Human;" I've watched two episodes so far and I love it. :D

Oh hello Monday, I did not miss you. Though it's much better to be in the office without the sense of burgeoning panic that characterized last week.

Had one of those frustrating weekends where I felt like I was just pushing graphite around, boo. I know this may sound kind of weird and counter-intuitive, but I think I need to write myself plans for my art in the future; my specific list of things to do really helped with all the fanart I drew this last month or so. It's not like I'd have to stick with the plan if inspiration ran a different way, but it really might help; otherwise I wind up flailing with too many options and not enough discipline.

I did watch a bunch of Merlin, so I guess it's time to admit defeat or something. :p It's kind of a dumb show, honestly, but amusingly so. Perfect sort of thing to draw to. Plus, actual femslash potential!

(Speaking of femslash, I think I will sign up to do art for [livejournal.com profile] thelittlebang. \o/)

The other main thing I did with my weekend was walk around in the rain, getting soaked to the skin with absolutely no kind of protection. My umbrella died a lingering death, though I suppose it's all right; the two old friends I was meeting up with do not believe in rain gear. We looked like drowned rats by the time we got to that cafe, but at least we matched. Still, I am totally the worst [livejournal.com profile] intensityboat member. *g*

My mother sent me the most hilarious email this afternoon, entitled "I need art!!!!!"

I need some of your newer art to post in my office. Where can I download online and print to office color printer! Need now!! Need, need, need—arghhhh!

WTF, how is she so adorable (and kind of nuts)? ♥ (I really ought to draw something suitable for public consumption this year.)

On a mostly different note, you should all IMMEDIATELY go check out [livejournal.com profile] guinsky's Unholyverse fanart here. It's beautiful, and the level of detail is absolutely astonishing, and she is generally kind of my favorite. SO. :D
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (hmph - I bet Lois Lane never says that)
Ooh, this day needs to end. I made a mess of my latest piece of fanart at lunchtime and I've spent the last three hours twitching because I can't fix it; at this rate I'm going to wind up trying to draw on the train.

Actually, if I could skip ahead a couple of weeks, that would be all-around lovely.
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (the drama - the horror - EMOTE)
Returning to the usual, totally frivolous subject matter of this journal: good lord, but it's an embarrassing week to be a fangirl. :/ Not remotely classy, bbs.

On the brighter side, My Chemical Romance's version of "living like the rest of us."Mikeyway is working on a comic book? Ray Toro is in a Weezer cover band? WHAT? (And Bob is oh-so-mysteriously . . . in his hometown. LOL MTV.) Gerard also rambles a bit more about the new album, which is intriguing. (Social commentary? How the world is now? Oh bb. ♥ I love it when you talk about your ~art.)

I kind of want to draw pointless comic strips about MCR forever. Why can't that be a valid lifestyle choice? I could collaborate with Bob Bryar on his solo project! >:(

(I'm mildly frustrated because I get to hang out with this awesome guitar-playing geeky boy today, and we're going to work on our respective comic things, but I don't think he'd so much get the bandom stuff . . . so I have to stick to original work and keep the ten pages of reference photos tucked out of sight. I need to work on my original stuff! There are potential deadlines involved! So of course, all I really want to do is draw Gerard's precious face. My life, so hard. STFU, self.)

In conclusion, oh Pete Wentz. How so precious?
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (hard at work - drawing - garry)
This did not wind up being the weekend of productivity I was hoping for (at one point, I was badly derailed by a sudden icon-making frenzy). The comic strip I'm working on is about half done; if you'd like, there's a terrible blurry photo of two panels that you can see. )

I also at least thumbnailed some of the other stuff I want to draw, much of which will probably go faster than this. (Trying to draw Gerard's face twelve times in a row, fairly consistently, is seriously nerve-wracking. Even when I give up on fiddling endlessly with it, trying to improve the likeness. I'm grateful to people who take a billion photos of him at one event, really, because it gives me an entire model sheet to work with.)

I considered making a long, meta post about the balance between valuing female characters and over-idealizing their personalities away; and also, how particularly fascinating this issue could be in an RPF fandom. But, I wound up not having the stamina . . . and anyway, I had nothing specific to say about the wank itself. Apropos of very little, I think people should write more femslash. I always think people should write more femslash.

Amanda Palmer's solo album has not left my player in days. ♥ I'm excited to buy it for real. Also, I've resisted a lot of frivolous fandom-related merch, but I am definitely getting one of these. (The umbrella. Though if they sold Gerards at my local comic shop, well . . . Sadly, I don't much like the action figure.)
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (comics - art - my icons are getting repe)
SO MANY ARTBUNNIES OMG. WRY IS WORK?

I'm not really sure why I keep trying to keep all my ideas a secret until I produce them. I mean, it makes sense for presents and things like poncho!Vicky-T, but not everything has to be a surprise. Maybe if I talk about some of them, I will still be motivated to work on them even when I'm all tired after work. (Not today, because I have a [livejournal.com profile] cilghal to drag around Harvard Square in search of comics! But more often!)

Standard Lilith!art disclaimer: I am insanely slow, and I make no promises. I want to draw so many things and never do! But I always hope to improve on that. :)

things I want to be drawing right now kthx )

Of course, I won't work on any of this next week, because I'll still have all the Big Bang fic to catch up on. :DDD:

In other news, I guess I'm going to have to learn to conduct myself in fandom without hiding behind [livejournal.com profile] sweetvalleyslut anymore. Yikes.

(Everyone think good thoughts for her with me, okay? She is my beloved very bestest of friends in the whole world, and all kinds of mush that you wouldn't even believe, and she is going out into the world in such a freaking literal sense! Where she will ROCK THE SOCKS OFF everyone in eastern Europe. ♥♥♥)
reflectedeve: Pearl from Steven Universe, in a tux and top hat (AU - crack - pensive - scary)
I'd have had an Avatar/bandom crack!comic to share this morning (with all two--three?--of the people who might actually been interested), if Photoshop hadn't gone berserk last night. An entire day's work gone down the drain! I could really scream. It was almost done.

I'm glad I was feeling stubborn enough to re-scan and start coloring again immediately. Just, gah. I usually have good luck with not losing my image files . . . that was fucking heartbreaking, even with such a silly bit of fluff.

On a more positive note, I'm kind of unhealthily excited about going to the midnight showing of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on Wednesday. Nutty my-childhood fannishness FTW. \o/

Rereading Arcadia is extremely refreshing. Also, have finally gotten around to picking up another volume of Hellboy. I'm going to start making comics soon if it kills me.

The only trouble is, I really can't do an anthology submission about how MCR saved my life inspiration. No really, self.
